Sheffield Eagles
Senior Academy 2007
"When The
Eagles were promoted to the Co-Operative National League One last
season, one of the first decisions of the Board was to run a Senior
Academy side in 2007.
Firstly, we
wanted to make sure that our non-playing first-team squad players had
the chance to stay match fit and, secondly, we feel there is a need for
the club to work with and develop young talented rugby players in the
area.
I hope that
we see players from both categories making a name for themselves in the
Senior Academy. Many of our present first-team squad have come through
the previous Academy system at Sheffield Eagles. Jack Howieson, Simon
Morton and Mitch Stringer are just three names who are playing regular
first-team games in the National Leagues for the club who joined as
Academy players from amateur clubs. This proves that the door is open to
anyone who is striving to be a professional rugby league player and I
wish every player who pulls on an Academy shirt the best in fulfilling
their dream to play rugby league as a pro. As a club, we are looking
for ward to the day when we can generate more and more local, home-grown
talent to play for the Eagles, drawing on the rich talent that is
available in South Yorkshire at the junior clubs like
Hillsborough Hawks,
Hoyland Vikings and
Sheffield Forgers.
For many
youngsters at these clubs, their first challenge is to play for the
Eagles Academy and, with hard work, we look forward to welcoming these
players into the first-team fold future years. Our partners at
Hillsborough Arena have been fantastic in accommodating Sheffield
Eagles for the nine home games in 2007.
The venue is
ideal for rugby league at this level and we hope that the partnership
can continue to grow in future years as the Eagles Academy structure
grows.
Finally, may
I take this opportunity to thank everyone who has had an involvement in
the setting up and the running of the Senior Academy, most of whom are
giving up their time for free for the love of the club and of rugby
league as a sport.
Without the help of so many
dedicated people, things would not run as smoothly as I am sure they
will during the season." [1]
What follows in these pages are
stats and figures based entirely on the matchday stats collected for the
coaching team and management of the Academy team. The style will change from game one, and
no doubt will continue to evolve.
