Leeds based Hunslet Parkside, a club that can boast having had two British Lions
Captain's in both rugby codes through their junior ranks (Gary Schofield and
Jason Robinson) came to Hillsborough with their Under 15's and U16's Youth
teams. Much to the delight of the the home contingent is was the South Yorkshire
club that came out tops in both encounters.
The U16's quickly found themselves two points down as Hunslet slotted over a
penalty from 30 yards. However Hawks quickly hit back with a slick passing move
ending with Richard Spinks going over in the corner. Converted tries from Dany
Horsfield and Corey Hanson took Hawks into a commanding position and just before
half time Micheal Ashton popped up in the corner to score his first ever try in
a Hawks shirt. Half time Hawks 22, Hunslet Parkside 8.
Hawks continued to boss the game in the second period and within ten minutes
Spink had got his second try (neatly layed-on by Thomas Haycox) and Hanson had
ran-in his hat-trick. Jono Burns got in on the act with his customery scoot from
a yard and Hanson finished off the game with his fourth try. With five Hanson
conversion and one from Ryan Matthews, Hawks ran out comfortable winners at 48
points to 12.
A great TEAM performance from the Hawks U16's.
Hawks U15's 16 Hunslet Parkside 10
The Under 15s also won their fixture in a closely fought
match, 16 - 10. This was a much improved performance by the U15s after
disappointing results in recent friendlies. Up against a strong and well drilled
team, the U15s produced one of their best performances to date in what was
expected to be a comfortable run out for Parkside. Hawks monopolised the play
and forced Parkside into unforced error after unforced error with a massive
effort from their forwards. Lead by captain Blake Marshland-Gray the Hawks
dominated the first half after Parkside took an early lead with a penalty kick.
Despite having all of the possession, Hawks found it difficult to get through
the resolute Parkside defence and were only able to register 2 first half tries
scored by Andy Farrow and Ashley Dillon, conversion by Cory Vivian. Half Time:
Hawks 10, Parkside 2.
The second half saw more of the same with the Hawks only troubling the
scoreboard once through a short range try from Ashley Dillon which was converted
by Cory Vivian. The final quarter was much more evenly balanced, Hunslet showing
at last that they are a quality side. A ragged Hawks defence allowed Parkside to
score 2 unconverted tries from broken play to take them within a score of the
Hawks, but the Hawks held on to win.
Man of the Match: Jake Neves-Love for his outstanding and uncompromising defence
and his darting runs.

and gave the wing space to score, halftime 18-12. Second half saw Underbank tire
and further pressure from Hillsborough forced gaps in their defence allowing a
further 5 tries, with Man of the Match, Conner Scott breaking several tackles to
race 45 metres to score, final score 44-12.
