Meltham 32 Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks 12

Meltham came with a strong, big set of physical lads. The Hawks put up a fight but were beaten on the day by the better team. Cory Aston was injured after the first 15 mins of play but not before he knocked up 6 points for the Hawks with a try and conversion, unfortunately he didn't make it back on the field. Despite a try from Gregg Burns and a conversion from Jack Mitchell the Hawks left the pitch beaten by a stronger team. Man of match for Hawks Gregg Burns.

Queensbury / Thornton U10 10 Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks U10 34

The Hawks under 10's made a very positive start to this match, playing downhill with a slight wind in their favour. Cory Aston scored an early individual try which he converted successfully. The second try came from constant pressure in defence which resulted in the opposition knocking on. Aston also scored this try which was converted by Jack Mitchell. The third and final try of the first half came from some strong running from Matthew Bloomer making the half time score 16-0. In the first 5 minutes of the second half the Hawks failed to turn pressure into points and Queensbury / Thornton capitalised on the Hawks mistakes to score an impressive try. Hawks soon turned the pressure back on with Cory Aston scoring his third try of the match, converted by Matthew Bloomer. A further try followed after some excellent play by Man of the Match Greg Burns, and this was again successfully converted by Craig Chapman. The final try came from Jake Johnson who chased a good kick from Aston on the last tackle, and this was converted by Thomas Hague. All credit to Queensbury / Thornton who refused to give in and were rewarded with a late try at the end of the game. Wibsey Juniors 12 Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks U10 20

Hawks made a good start to the game against the previously unbeaten Wibsey side. After some good pressure Hawks scored the first try. Cory Aston was the scorer and also successfully converted. Some strong running from defence brought Hawks into the Wibsey half and on the fifth and final tackle Bloomer ran the ball and scored a very good individual try. This proving to be the break the Hawks needed to secure the win, giving the final score of 20-12. Thomas Hague was awarded man of the match for his overall involvement in the game. Saturday 16thApril

Festival of Rugby - Ovenden
SHEFFIELD HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS U10

The team were in fine spirits as they travelled on the team coach to Halifax. We were allocated three games on arrival, each being 9-a-side seven minutes each way. First game against King Cross was very evenly matched with Hawks outscoring 3 tries to two. An excellent performance, we were later told it was the first game they had lost in two seasons. Second game against Hoyland Vikings, again the Hawks showed their superiority after going down to an early try they bounced back to finish the game 4 tries to 2 in their favour. Third game was against Wyke who were also unbeaten so far in the tournament. After conceding an early try Hawks rallied to make it all even at half time. Powerful attack and slick handling in the second half gave us a third victory. The champagne flowed as the squad enjoyed their success, a real party atmosphere on the team coach as we returned to Sheffield. Congratulations to the whole squad - Tom Hague, Carl Thomas, Jack Mitchell, Sam Ashworth, Cory Aston, Greg Burns, Matthew Lunn, Luke Turner, Ashford Mayne, William Robertson, Matt Bloomer, Daniel Bell, Craig Chapman, Jake Johnson and Danny Lee and of course coach David Mitchell

24th April 2005

SHEFFIELD HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS U10 26 WEST BOWLING U10 10

The Hawks played their last match of the season in fine style with an impressive win over West Bowling. Hawks defence was outstanding throughout the game giving West Bowling no space to play. Hawks always looked dangerous when in possession. Craig Chapman started the scoring when he was rewarded a try after breaking through solid defence, Cory Aston converted. The next try came from quick thinking by Matt Bloomer picking up at acting half back and diving for the line. West Bowling replied with a try. Aston led by example, as always, and got on the score sheet with a well worked team try. Greg Burns added a spectacular try running the length of the pitch giving a half time score of 18-10. Hawks continued to dominate in the second half with solid defence and intelligent attacking play keeping West Bowling pinned in their own half. The rewards came with a try from Sam Ashworth and a further from Aston to give a final score of 26-10. Once again a real treat for all spectators. Man of the match awarded to Burns for his tenacious play at all times. He was well supported defensively by Bloomer, Aston, and Jack Mitchell. Well done to Tom Hague and Matt Lunn, who have improved with every game
