Sheffield
Hillsborough Hawks v. Siddal
“Siddal had the upper hand from the
start for their 11 players and Hillsborough had only 8 and one of those
playing with an injury. This was a hard fought game, not always according
to BARLA rules on the Siddal side. The opposition led from the start and
it wasn’t until the 2nd half when Tom Roberts took a pass that enabled
him to storm over the try line and Ben Hawksworth converted. Captain Ben
Hawksworth was awarded Man of The Match. Special Award to all of the
team for their gallant efforts.”

West Bowling 38
Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks 6
The result doesn't reflect how the under 11's played today.
Despite being a newly formed team with only 9 players the Hawks went out
heads held high and proved to us all how to play as a team. Tackling
improves weekly with the young lads, new lads following the examples set
out by James Proctor, Thomas Roberts, Ben Hawksworth. James Proctor
scored the only try and converted to make 6 points for the Hawks. Man of
the match Thomas Roberts.
10th October 2004
Wyke 40 Sheffield
Hillsborough Hawks 40
The Hawks were ready to take on Wyke, a little ragged and bunched up on
the field of play, due to both teams being desperately short of players.
It was decided to field 7 players aside which gave the Hawks 2 subs and
Wyke 1. Hawks started well with a flurry of tries and a couple of missed
conversions, but the lads were eager. Captain Ben Hawksworth attained
his mission ' a hat-trick of tries ', which was a superb effort . James
Proctor also followed in style by getting his first hat trick of the
season. Rory Wheatcroft scored 2 tries walking away with man of the
match for his tackling. Tom Roberts, Ryan Marritt made superb runs for
the team .Hillsborough Hawks being the gentlemen that they are found it
hard to tackle no 11 for Wyke (called Charlotte !) which resulted in
Wyke catching up on the score board. A try disallowed by Wykes referee
for the Hawks scoring from acting half back would have seen the under
11's win. Unfair but referees decisions are final.
17th October 2004
U10 and U 11 matches were called off
due to lack of players and lack of
transport on behalf of the opposition.
31st October 2004
Meltham All Blacks 34
Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks 24
Fielding 9 players of which Ryan only just recovering from a serious
gash to his knee saw a slow start to the Hawks performance .A quiet word
from the coach and Captain Ben Hawksworth saw a different side in the
second half. Spectators were treated to Edward and Jack making a mark on
their first ever Rugby League game, with outstanding tackling and
playing power. David Brown deserved his man of the match for storming
through Meltham's defence with sheer guts, determination and power. The
Hawks may have lost by 10 points but all involved in the game stood
their ground, tackled hard and played as a team.
7th November 2004
Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks U11 12 Wibsey 42
Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks playing Wibsey for the second time this
season, this time at home and this time they managed to make their mark
on the score sheet, showing six points in their favour. The coaches were
hoping for an improvement in tackling to see them through this time.
They were not too disappointed, the lads played well, and the first time
this season with 11 players on the field of play. This was also the
debut for the brother of 'Man of the Match', Matt Stanton. Wibsey got
off to a flying start, moving the ball around the pitch. A fair game
played, with both sides ready for action. Relying on our two ' gainers
of ground ', James Proctor scoring and converting in the early stages of
the game. David ' Tank ' Brown, furrowing his way through to one of the
most determined tries we have seen all season. With the field of play '
muddy ', and Hillsborough suffering the odd spec of muck in the corner
of their eyes, the team played well!! Our two newest players Edward
Leigh & Jack Stanton played well. They stuck in when tackling was
required, Jack Stanton, being the smallest player on the field, coming
off with ' Man of The Match ', for his superb effort, stuck in at every
opportunity. A final score line of 42-12. Rory Wheatcroft converting
David Brown's try, James Proctor ably converting his own. There was a
definite improvement in Hillsborough's play, as far as Wisbey's coach
was concerned, saying " A much better game than last we played, your
lads are playing fair and gaining experience ". Thanks to Wibsey's coach
for coaching in the true spirit of the game! Lack of tackling and moving
up as soon as the play started being Hawks downfall in this game. There
was a good all round effort in the second half of the game from the
Hawks.
14th November 2004
SIDDAL 60 SHEFFIELD HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS U11 6
Sheffield Under 11's played away at Siddal. Lovely sunny morning all 10
players ready for the return match against Siddal. Captain Ben
Hawksworth lead his team in fine style, taking every opportunity to be
involved in the game. Whether that was tackling, moving around the field
of play or simply running and gaining ground. Well done for all your
efforts Captain Ben, in particular the cracking try scored in the first
half. Ben's try came from a series of passes from left to right and back
again. Siddal didn't know whether they were coming or going. Ben's try
converted by Rory Wheatcroft. Well done Rory. Man of the match awarded
to Vice Captain Myles Wood for his 'getting stuck in', tackling well and
making good ground whenever the opportunity arose. Very well done Myles,
keep at it and enjoy holding this weeks 'Man of The Match ' trophy. It
was a pleasure to see that apart from a few high tackles, ( penalties
awarded to the Hawks by the ref for the same ), Siddal played in the
spirit of the game. A hard and fast game, leaving our players in their
wake when they got their speed up. Thanks to Siddal's coaching staff and
to the referee for an enjoyable game and their kind hospitality. Once
again Hawks found themselves reeling from a lack of strong tackling. If
we don't tackle when defending, the opposition score as they did today.
The score line of 60 - 6 didn't reflect the game played, there were some
superb runs by David Brown, Edward Leigh, Rory Wheatcroft & Jack
Stanton. Please remember for our next game Hawks: - Spread out, don't
bunch up, tackle well ( in two's please ), move the ball about, ( after
all from passing the ball we scored ) and don't be frightened to support
your players when they have the ball. Good all round effort Hawks.

28th November 2004
SHEFFIELD HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS U11 46 WYKE 36
Sheffield Hawks Under 11's were intent on their first win proper this
season. All had worked hard in training on Tuesday, all ready to give
their best. Captain Ben Hawksworth appointed Tom Atkinson as his second
in command, 'Vice Captain' for this game. Looks like a very good choice
with Tom attaining his first hat trick for his team and conversion of
one of his tries. His performance ensuring he took the man of the match
trophy home with him to enjoy for the next week. Superb effort Tom
Atkinson. When Tom Atkinson wasn't scoring he was running the ball,
making ground and tackling like never before. Very well done, coaches
and team mates proud of you. It doesn't stop there: Ben Hawksworth
scoring two fabulous tries, one in particular down to good team effort
with our smallest player Jack Stanton passing the ball to him just at
the right moment for him to place the ball comfortably over the line. He
ably converting the two between the posts. Superb Captaincy Ben, leading
from the front as always! Jack Stanton took heed of the coaching staff
and tackled the infamous Charlotte, who frightened the Hawks players in
the previous match because they didn't want to tackle her, by himself.
She went down and didn't want the ball again after realising we can
tackle well & hard. Great tackling Jack, always getting stuck in and
only having played a few games for the U'11's so far. Pleased to see
James Proctor back into the action, scoring one superb try after running
almost the full length of the pitch. James converting his own try and
one more on behalf of David Brown. Well done James! Well done to Rory
Wheatcroft. Scoring a brilliant try and converting his own try. Good all
round effort from Rory. David Brown scored a stormer of a try using his
power & strength, head down and straight through. Well done to David
Brown . Ryan Marritt converted one of Tom's tries and whenever Ryan had
the ball he always made ground. Not the easy game we thought we would
have having drawn 40-40 with Wyke on our last game. Their star player '
Charlotte ', although quick when she had the ball, only once did she
break through our defence this time. Good defensive cover from the Hawks
ensured we did not have a repeat of our last outing against Wyke. Good
all round effort Hawks, and well done on your first well deserved win.
12th December 2004
SHEFFIELD HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS U11 22 SLAITHWAITE
SARACENS 50
Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks were off to a flying start with James
Proctor absolutely storming through Slaithwaite's defence like a hot
knife through butter. Not once but twice within the first ten minutes of
play. It appeared that we were in for an evenly matched game with Hawks
seeking and taking advantage of defensive breaks in the oppositions
line. Young Mr. Proctor's ( James ) final tally of tries being four and
converting one of his tries, then allowing Rory Wheatcroft & Tom
Atkinson to successfully convert the other two. Slaithwaite, unbeaten
this season found themselves in a bit of a kafuffle to start, with a
half time score line of 18 - 22. They were certainly a different side
when they came out for the second half taking full advantage of our
defensive gaps and lack of tackling from the Hawks. Final score 22 - 50.
Captain Ben Hawksworth and fellow ' runner ' Rory Wheatcroft shared the
man-of-the-match trophy this week, both for superb team play and the
best tackling seen from both lads this season. Both got stuck in and
from time to time found themselves bouncing off some of Slaithwaites
'Big lads'. Well done to you both! Very, very special mention also to
James Proctor for his ongoing effort in both training and on the field
of play. New player Jack Littlewood played his first game for the Hawks
today. Jack got stuck into all aspects of the game and had a good first
game for his team. Well done and keep up the good work. Whenever Hawks
had the ball made good ground. Honorary mentions to Tom Atkinson, Ryan
Marritt, Myles Wood and David 'tank' Brown for some great runs, head on,
showing no fear. Brilliant effort lads. Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks
played a good team game against a very strong, well disciplined team.
Well done Hawks and see you all for training on Tuesday.

WYKE 12 SHEFFIELD HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS U11 18
Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks played away against Wyke. As always,
equally matched with the Hawks hoping Wyke may have had too much
Christmas pudding over the holidays. The field of play was a quagmire.
Wykes normal pitch was water-logged and the game was played on a
slightly better pitch which had just been churned up by the under 10's.
Wyke scored their first try using all the field of play and passing the
ball around their players. James Proctor quickly got into his stride and
responded, fleeting through Wykes defence and scoring a good well earned
try. James also converted his try. Well done James. Wyke came again
scoring one more and again ably converting. All players covered head to
toe in mud decided it was time for us to play our best if they were to
be in with a chance of winning. All bar non got themselves stuck in when
tackling and played a good team game. Special mentions to Vice Captain
Myles Wood, Ryan Marritt, Jack Littlewood, David Brown, David Ashby,
James Proctor and Tom Atkinson. Each player defended well with some
fantastic tackling seen from all. Tom Atkinson nearly saw his first try
of the New Year when he slid past Wykes defence and ran full length of
the pitch, only being pushed into touch two yards from the try line.
Superb effort Tom. Jack Littlewood having only played a couple of games
ever is starting to build confidence when tackling, all tackles
supported with his team mates assisting. Well done Jack, keep it up. Ben
Hawksworth was absent today leaving position as Captain up for grabs for
this game. Captain Rory Wheatcroft took the responsibility by leading by
example scoring two tries, converting one and allowing team mate Tom
Atkinson to convert his other try. Rory was involved in every play of
the ball, his tackling the most effective he has ever done. Well done
Rory. He was rewarded with the man of the match trophy, chosen by Hawks
parents on this occasion. Final score; Wyke 12; Sheffield Hillsborough
Hawks 18.
All training staff & Manager were delighted with the team effort and
hope for the same next we play at home this coming Sunday. Fantastic
effort by all players!! Get well soon Ben.
16th January 2005
SHEFFIELD HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS U11 22 OVENDEN
UNDER 11 36
Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks were still if fine mood from their win at
Wyke last Sunday. Captain Ben Hawksworth back with his team after his
recent injury and as always leading from the front. Great to see you
back Ben. James Proctor quickly got into his stride, as we have come to
expect by making space and taking Ovenden's defence on single handed,
scoring in the first few minutes of the game. Ovenden, a strong team
with a good couple of extra years experience than the Hawks immediately
responded scoring and converting. Some good strong runs from Captain
Ben, James Proctor, Tom Atkinson, Myles Wood & Rory Wheatcroft, only
unable to score due to Ovenden's good defending. Captain Ben scored a
well thought out try, converting his own try, James Proctor scoring
another two tries converted by Tom Atkinson & Rory Wheatcroft. James
Proctor received this weeks man-of-the-match not only for scoring three
GOOD tries but for his involvement in the game and his tremendous
tackling. A mention also for Captain Ben who lead his team by example,
involved in almost every play of the ball with good strong tackles every
time. The Hawks only letting themselves down this week with the lack of
tackling from fellow team mates and poor defensive play in parts. Not
taking anything away from Ovenden, when in attack they meant business.
Final score reflecting the game well at 22 - 36, a good win for Ovenden.
January 30th 2005
SHEFFIELD HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS U11 18 NEWESOME
PANTHERS U11 42
A hard game was expected by the Hawks knowing that Newsome have some big
lads and strong players. The spectators were privileged to see a fair
game with both teams working hard throughout. Debut performance by
Nathan Sharpe, ( and also man-of-the match ) saw young Nathan stuck in
at every opportunity. Calling for the ball, tackling well and gaining
ground when in possession. Top marks for his first game playing for the
Hawks. The score line of 18 - 42 was a good reflection of the game seen
today. Newsome very strong in defence only allowing Hawks to slip
through on three occasions. Tries scored by the Hawks: Good strong run
resulting in a great try scored by James Proctor, converting his own
try, Captain Ben Hawksworth ( converted by Rory Wheatcroft ). Ben was
there at EVERY play and worked well all the match leading as always by
example. A very strong solid run straight at The Panthers by David Brown
( converted by Tom Atkinson ). In response to each try scored by the
Hawks, Newsome came straight back and through a defence weakened by
Hawks not moving up & covering when required. Special mentions to all
the players today. We were up against some big strong lads who
incidentally have been playing as a team together for the past three
years. Well done to all the Hawks players. We look forward to a return
match at Newsome. Compliments received from Newsom's coach and parents
on our lads playing fair and well, especially considering this is our
first season. Many thanks to Newsome.
6th February 2005
SHEFFIELD HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS U11S 24 MELTHAM 30
Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks played their return match with Meltham.
Last time Hawks played away at Meltham they lost only by 2 points. The
lads were ready, having concentrated on fitness & tackling training last
Tuesday training session. A great effort shown by The Hawks today, still
slow in moving up when in defence it has to be said. Some fabulous runs,
great sporadic tackling and effort, Hawks only missed out on a win when
David Brown unfortunately didn't place the ball in the try scoring area
in time. Good effort David. Once more Hawks saw a brand new player
joining them for his first ever game, Alistair Bell. Alistair enjoyed
his game and was stuck in at every opportunity. That effort and
commitment to his team, winning him ' Man of the Match' award and trophy
to keep for the next week. Congratulations Alistair. Best tackle by far
in the whole game performed by James Proctor, winner of ' best tackle ',
stopping his man on the spot. Rory Wheatcroft's work rate going up every
game now, winning him the title of ' Most tackles in the game '. Keep up
the good work Rory. Captain Ben injured for a short while, after five
minutes, he was back on and directing his players once again. Special
mentions for, last weeks man of the match, Nathan Sharpe scoring his
first try for his team. Fantastic determined run by Nathan. Very well
done! Mentions also to Captain Ben showing some good tackling as with
Vice Captain Myles Wood, Ryan Marritt, Alex Mitchell, David Brown, Jack
Littlewood & David Ashby. Some good defensive work seen in part by the
Hawks today, only letting themselves down with lack of constant
effective tackling. A score line of 24 to 30 shows that the Hawks are
getting closer to success every game they play. Good all round effort by
the Hawks, only beaten by Meltham's experienced play. Nice once more to
have congratulations bestowed by parents & coach of Meltham on Hawks
efforts today. They thought they were in for an easy game and were
shocked at how well Hawks have come on since last they played Meltham.
HAWKS TRYS: James Proctor(2); Nathan Sharpe (1); Myles Wood (1) ;Goals :
James Proctor;Captain Ben Hawksworth; Tom Atkinson; Rory Wheatcroft.
WELL DONE TO ALL !!
13th February 2005
KEIGHLEY 20 SHEFFIELD HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS U11 36
Conditions best described as BLEAK, strong winds, snow and bitter cold.
Undeterred the Hawks quickly got into their stride with James Proctor
dummying and taking the ball almost the full length of the pitch to
score the first try of the game. Our kickers were up against the
elements today, three missing the goal purely due to the strong wind.
All spectators and parents were treat to the best game played by
Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks this season. Fitness now improving thanks
to Kevin Brown taking the players for 'fun-fitness' every training
session. By far the better team on the day the Hawks were astounding in
defence, missing very few tackles. Captain Ben Hawksworth lead his team
once more by example, performing the best tackles his team has seen ever
throughout the full 40 minutes of play along with being part of making
two tries & converting one. For his outstanding efforts in defence (
tackling ) and all round great play, Captain Ben received a unanimous
vote for man of the match trophy, close competition by James Proctor.
James totalled three tries and one conversion. Almost every time James
took hold of the ball he breezed through a strong Cougar defence and
scored. Superb effort James! Special mentions, where do we start? Every
player deserves a special mention. Captain Ben, Vice Captain Myles Wood
( ran a storming try over the line ), Tom Atkinson once more back in a
determined frame of mind scoring two tries with Cougars defence unable
to catch sprightly Tom, also converting one of his own tries; Only three
games under his belt and becoming a regular try scorer Nathan Sharpe,
with sheer determination ran through to score a fantastic try; Alistair
Bell ( second game played ) saved Hawks twice with his 'wrap - up
tackling' stopping Cougars scoring. Alex Mitchell & Jack Stanton, the
two smallest players on the team were involved in absolutely every
tackle they could become involved in. Ryan Marritt once more tackling at
his best and converting one of his team mates tries. Rory Wheatcroft
again stuck into very tackle possible along with David Brown, David
Ashby and Jack Littlewood. Great to see David's A & B using their
strength in stopping their opposite number in their tracks. An amazing
turn round in the performance by Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks, playing
as a team and giving 100% effort. FANTASTIC PERFORMANCE BY THE HAWKS.
WELL DONE TO ALL !!
20th March 2005
NEWSOME PANTHERS 38 SHEFFIELD HILLSBOROUGH
HAWKS U11 26
Bad weather has prevented Hawks playing a game for the past five weeks.
Hawks ended their run on a high last they played against Keighley. A bit
rusty and with 14 players all touting for a game today, they were set to
show the opposition what they were made of. Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks
under 11's were today joined by their newest player Jordan Arthur.
Jordan has trained with the Hawks only for a month and is set to be one
of the team's most effective players. Well done for your effort today
Jordan. Jordan almost scored a try, good defending by Newsome stopped
his efforts. Nathan Sharpe was definitely in the running for man of the
match today having scored two fantastic tries against a team having
three seasons under their belt. Nathan ran the full length of the pitch,
dummying and side stepping like a 'Pro'. Bearing in mind that Nathan has
only played four games for the Hawks and is still improving. Superb
effort. Captain Ben Hawksworth today produced his best tackling ever!
Without that extra effort the score line would not have been as close as
it was. Ben further scored a great try, converting his try with ease.
Ben received the accolade of not only 'best tackle' of the match but
also the most tackles in the game. Superb effort from the Captain! Ryan
Marritt again showing a clean pair of heels, scoring a well thought out
try and also converting his own try. David Brown stormed through and
scored much to the disbelief of the opposition, Tom Atkinson had a few
good runs and came into his own in the second half tackling anything
which moved. Tom also converted David Brown's try. Jack Littlewood, also
one of the teams newest players made some very effective tackles today.
His confidence is building every game he plays. Well done Jack. Jack
Stanton made a great run today, dodging and weaving his way forwards.
Keep it up Jack. James Proctor putting in some very hard and effective
tackles along with some marvellous runs. Alex Mitchell & Alistair Bell
again putting in the required effort, a little more match experience
will see them both starting every game. Man-of-the-match trophy was
awarded to Vice Captain Myles Wood. If he wasn't first into a tackle, he
was certainly there assisting wherever he could. A great all round
performance today from Myles. Well done! Hawks were up against a
seasoned side today only letting themselves down with a lack of constant
effective tackling from all the team. As mentioned, Hawks were a bit
rusty in parts due solely to lack of match playing. The lads played as a
team and are becoming a force to be reckoned with. Final score of 38 -
26 was a good reflection of the game. Hawks commended as being the
better team on the day. That commendation coming from the ref, coach &
parents of Newsome! GREAT TEAM EFFORT - WELL DONE HAWKS
3rd April 2005
MELTHAM U11 32 - SHEFFIELD HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS U11 16
Hawks were expecting a close game having only lost by four points last
they played Meltham at home. Some sparkling individual performances by
James Proctor, scoring two well thought out tries, one fantastic
interception & converting one. David Ashby for his best game this season
and Rory Wheatcroft for scoring, converting and clever kicking play
whilst under pressure. Meltham placed Hawks under pressure from the
start of the game. Every time Meltham had hold of the ball they stormed
through Hawks weak defence. Hawks again reluctant to move forward when
defending leaving Meltham ample time to think their moves through.
Special mention to this week's best tackler and Man-of-the-Match, Ryan
Marritt. Although his first half was quiet, the Hawks saw Ryan put
together three consecutive tackles from three plays of the ball, the
last one leaving the opposition player winded for some 10 minutes. Well
done Ryan, keep up the splendid work. Captain Ben Hawksworth was taken
from the field of play after only 10 minutes. He was caught by a stud
very close to his eye. Although he was game to carry on, the coaching
staff deemed that he should support his team mates from the side line on
this occasion. Get well soon Captain Ben!! Hawks ran into touch of five
occasions, some poor passing, all the team being in front of the ball
carrier, gave Meltham the win they deserved today. Hawks saved by
further scores from Meltham with superb runs from Nathan Sharpe, only
let down with lack of support from Hawks players.
10th April 2005
HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS U11 34 KEIGHLEY COUGARS U11 22
Captain Ben Hawksworth led his team in fine style against Keighley
Cougars, scoring two well structured tries and converting one. Ben also
coming away with 'Joint top & most consistent tackler with team mate
Rory Wheatcroft' The tackles from all were going in so quick & fast that
Ashley was having trouble keeping up with the count. Both Captain Ben &
Rory down for 17 good strong tackles each. Very well done. Newcomer
Jordan Arthur was not far behind his Captain & Rory with his tackling
this game, some superb effort from one of the teams newer players. Well
done Jordan. Alistair Bell once again getting stuck into every tackle he
could. Great stuff Alistair. Much to the delight of the coaching /
managing staff & parents, Hawks put on their best attacking game this
season. Good determined runs from David Ashby, David Brown saw Hawks
quickly get into their stride. David Brown scoring his best try this
season along with his all round effort got him the 'Man-of-the-match'
trophy this week. Once more the Hawks were treated to some fantastic
forward thinking by Nathan Sharpe. Nathan's speed proved too much for
the Cougars. Nathan scored two tries and his tackling efforts proved
once again that he is an asset for his team. Hawks worked well under
pressure when up against good defensive play by the Cougars. Jack
Littlewood scoring his first try for him team, scoring by Hawks putting
a great string of passes together. Great stuff Jack! Hawks saw their
last weeks man-of-the-match, Ryan Marritt score a lovely try from a well
placed fifth tackle kick, courtesy of Captain Ben. He also converted his
try. Keep up the good work Ryan. Hawks were determined that they put
into action all which they had practised last Tuesday at training.
Virtually every time the Hawks moved the ball down their attacking line,
their efforts were rewarded with a try. Pass the ball safely and score.
The final score again a good reflection of the game with Hawks taking
another win 34 - 22. Not once did the referee have to take any back-chat
from the Hawks players, discipline at all time wins games. A big thank
you also to Keighley Cougars for playing fair & in the true spirit of
the game. Congratulations once more awarded by the Cougars coach & staff
to the Hawks for their discipline, positional play throughout and 'TEAM
WORK'.
WELL DONE TO ALL !!
Sunday 17th April
Festival of Rugby - Ovenden
SHEFFIELD HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS U 11
Hawks were invited to an under 11's tournament, held at Ovenden. Our
draw may not have been relished by the less brave, Hawks rose to the
challenge, once more in fine style. Hawks saw themselves with a full
squad of 14 registered players all anxious to show their talents. First
game against Queensbury, a team which Hawks have not so far had the
pleasure of playing. Queensbury as their ancient names sake ( Marquis of
Queensbury Rules ) suggests, played hard but fair. Hawks a little slow
in their first game whilst in defence saw Hawks lose their game 4 tries
to 1 ( James Proctor try scorer ). Undeterred and after only a 10 minute
break, straight into a very hard game with West Bowling. Two tries
scored, one from Captain Ben, and again another try from James Proctor.
Both Captain Ben & James put in their very best efforts. As Hawks gained
momentum we saw Hawks defence step up a notch, to the surprise of West
Bowling who thought they were still dealing with the same team as Hawks
had at the start of the season. Hawks lost their second game only by one
try. Effort from all concerned - SUPERB - Final game against Slaithwaite
Saracens ( affectionally known to some as Slowitt ). Hawks played
Slaithwaite at the start of their season and were run ragged by a well
disciplined team. Hawks held Slaithwaite to a one - one draw, very much
to the surprise of their coach. Captain Ben Hawksworth scoring the only
try for his team on this occasion. Brilliant stuff Ben. Ben is off to
hospital tomorrow to have a 'dink' in his nose fixed. All the lads and
parents pass on their best wishes for a speedy recovery Captain. Get
well soon, we have a lot still to do ( in about 6 weeks time or so ).
Special mentions to ALL the lads who took part in the tournament. Where
do we start. David Brown was tested to the very edge of his patience by
a rather large Saracens player, David standing his ground much to the
pleasure of his team mates. David attaining joint Man-of-the Match
trophy with newest team mate Jordan Arthur. Jordan is improving every
game he plays. Jordan was awarded the joint Man-of-the-Match award for
his unbelievable tackling efforts, positional play in support and
amazing defensive play. SUPERB efforts from both players. Not finished
yet. Due to both coaches refereeing games it was decided that on this
occasion it would be more fair that the parents watching would have the
pleasure of choosing man-of-the-Match winner. They now realise just how
hard it is. Along with coming to joint winners for the trophy, they
identified many more pieces of splendid play, in particular Alistair
Bell. Alistair continues to play good rugby with his amazing wrap up
tackling technique becoming the envy of other players. Well done indeed
Alistair. All have improved beyond recognition. Players who took part in
the day were: Captain Ben Hawksworth; Vice Captain Myles Wood; James
Proctor;Ryan Marritt, Jack Littlewood; Jack Stanton; David Ashby; Rory
Wheatcroft; Nathan Sharpe; Tom Atkinson; Alex Mitchell & not forgetting
JOINT MAN-OF-THE-MATCH WINNERS Jordan Arthur & David ( I stand no
nonsense ) Brown !!
BIG WELL DONE FROM THE UNDER 11'S TO HAWKS UNDER
10'S. WHAT A FANTASTIC DAY THEY HAD. WELL DONE LADS, DAVE & GEMMA! A
PLEASURE TO BE INVOLVED WITH THE SHEFFIELD HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS ( From all
coaching / Managing staff & Parents )
24th April 2005
HUDDERSFIELD SHARKS U11 22 SHEFFIELD HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS U11 38
Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks Under 11's played their last game of their
season away at Huddersfield Sharks ground. Weather fine, bright with
ideal rugby conditions. First time the Hawks have played on a full size
pitch, at the insistence of Sharks coach. No problem as it turned out
for the Hawks! WHAT A PERFORMANCE!! The very best Sheffield Hillsborough
Hawks team performance this season.Hawks only able to field 10 players
due to injuries ( not rugby related ) & other commitments. Sharks in a
similar position with 10 players. Sheffield quickly got into their
stride from kick off. Hawks put 5 tries on their score card before
Sharks even got a look in. Hawks put on their best performance of the
season with two players scoring their very first tries for their team;
David Ashby & Jordan Arthur. David Ashby's try coming from an amazingly
well directed 5th tackle kick, courtesy of today's Vice Captain, James
Proctor; caught by David only three strides away from the touch line.
David took the well directed catch with ease and scored. Fantastic
effort from David Ashby and superb positional play. Very well done David
and on his tackling which stopping Sharks in their tracks. Jordan, the
newest Hawks player, again read the game well and put himself in an open
position which allowed him to shrug off good tackles from the Sharks to
see him using his speed and score his first try for his team. Brilliant
Jordan!! The most amazing and hard fought for try coming from today's
Captain Myles Wood. Myles found himself taking the ball centre field and
running from the half way line. He was fiercely challenged by six of the
oppositions players, one after another they bounced off Captain Myles.
When he finally found himself only yards away from the try line ( with
four players wrapped around him, ) his last push saw him attain the most
determined fought for try of the game. Unbelievable effort Captain Myles
and very well done on leading your team mates by example. James ' The
main Man ' Proctor took control of the game by his stunning forward
thinking in every aspect of his game played today. James scored three
astounding tries, all involving him running almost the full length of
the pitch each time. No one could catch James due to his speed and sheer
determination. James even found himself being chased by a sprightly
Sharks player when on the road to his final try of the game, the Sharks
player didn't realise that James had held some speed in reserve. When
James was alerted that someone was coming close, he dropped down a gear
and sped off towards the line scoring a well deserved try. James also
converting two tries for his team, Jack Littlewood converting the other.
Jack Littlewood put in his best ever performance today, especially with
his tackling, much to the delight of his team mates, parents, coaching
staff & spectators. Good work rate Jack, top effort. David Brown showed
his determination in all aspects of his game today, only being stopped
from scoring by good tackling from the opposition. Great performance
David, well done!! Nathan Sharpe, as sharpe as ever. He took hold on the
ball from a well placed pass and took on the Sharks head on. He wrangled
and twisted his way through a good defensive line to score a lovely try,
also converting his own try. He swerved, dummied and side stepped his
way through to score, ably supported in his efforts by Rory Wheatcroft.
Rory's tackling now at his best, not missing many and those that went in
were on a par with his usual team Captain Ben Hawksworth's standards.
Ben would have been as pleased as punch with Rory today. Ben underwent
surgery on his nose last Tuesday and was unable to play today. Get well
soon Captain Ben! Your Vice Captain Myles Captained in good Hawks style
today. Some splendid effort from the so far unmentioned players today, in
particular from Jack Stanton & Tom Atkinson. Jack, still the smallest
player on the field, still one of the most determined Hawks players.
Brilliant efforts in his tackling along with a few good strong runs
today. Lovely stuff Jack. Tom managed to assist his team mates at every
opportunity both with his tackling and direct passing. Well done
Tom.What a way to end the season. A final score line of 22 - 38 in Hawks
favour showed that they are becoming fitter, more determined and their
skills improving every game. You are all a credit to yourselves and your
team!!Coaching staff, parents and spectators were amazed at today's
performance, Hawks working as a team in all aspects of play. Big thank
you for the ongoing support of all our parents. Even bigger thank you to
Simon Proctor for his assistance in coaching the lads & Kevin Brown for
taking the lads for enjoyable fitness training every Tuesday. It is
showing and giving us the results the lads are working for.Man of the
match trophy to be awarded Tuesday at training to David Ashby,
Jordan Arthur & today's Vice Captain James Proctor WELL DONE HAWKS -
From a very proud Barrie S. Wheatcroft
