38 Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks 10 (Report Richard Haycox)
The Hawks with only 10 players were up against
strong opposition from the start. Big lads with a full team and subs. On
the Hawks side they did as the coach had drilled into them, tackle, keep
your head up and show them we are here for business. Try's scored by
Thomas Haycox, Thomas Spencer, plus a goal from Thomas Haycox saw the
Hawks lose, but not without putting up a major fight. Man of the Match
Cory Vivian.

Hillsborough Hawks 10 :
(Report: Ian
Seville)
Fielding only a squad of 9 player's the Hawks put everything into
playing against Illingworth. Illingworth came down to 9 players to their
credit and saw a win in their sights . If not for the rousing
performance of the Hawks defence Illingworth would have scored more .
Tries scored for the Hawks Cory Vivian , Thomas Spencer, with Thomas
Haycox converting one goal. Daniel Wilson took home the Man of the Match
trophy.

Wyke 44 Sheffield
Hillsborough Hawks 10 : (Report: Ian Seville)
With only 8 players determination didn't stop the Hawks , Wyke seeing a
win within their sights didn't come down to 8 players to even up the
game, but the Hawks meant business when 8 players seemed like 13.
Hillsborough did not let Wyke get it all their own way. Tackles made by
Cory Vivian, James Whaling, Joe Bell, Daniel Wilson , Scott Tait and
Jono Burns mafe Wyke wonder if the win would be in their sights. Poor
defence was Wyke’s downfall even with the number superiority and nothing
was going to stop the Hawks storming over the Wyke try line, not just
once, but twice. Thomas Spencer was the ‘man of the moment’ scoring both
the tries and he also walked off with the “Man of The Match” award.
Thomas Haycox converted one of the tries to make the score 44 - 10 in
Wyke’s favour. Eventually Wyke decided to reduce their numbers to 8 for
the second half, knowing that the game was won, but they did not manage
to upset the scoreboard again. When the U 13s have a full squad there
looks to be a very good chance of other teams in the league finding that
Hillsborough Hawks will be a force to be reckoned with.

U 13 West Bowling 42 Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks 0
(Report by
Ian Seville)
Despite having only ten players the Hawks put in a sterling performance
against a full West Bowling squad of seventeen. Several hard tackles
resulted in injuries to Thomas Spencer, Daniel Wilson and Scott Tait,
who all showed great courage by returning to the field after treatment.
Nathan Wood put in a fine debut performance with man of the match going
to Scott Tait.

Under 13 Queens Knights 36 Sheffield
Hillsborough Hawks 2 (Report Ian Seville)
The final score line does not reflect the nature of the game. For the
first fifteen minutes the score was even with great defensive play from
the Hawks. But after a few mistakes from Hawks, Queens scored tries in
quick succession. Great tackling from Jonathan Burns also Stefan
Kazmeinski prevented further points being scored in the second half.
Daniel Wilson and Joshua Newel recovered from heavy tackles to continue
and Joe Lidstell had a great first game with Jonathan Burns getting the
Man of the Match award.

Brighouse Rangers 22 Sheffield
Hillsborough Hawks U13 6
(Report A Vivian)
On a heavy pitch and with Brighouse fielding a full squad of fifteen
players Hillsborough put in another improved performance. Despite only
twelve turning out for Hillsborough with the absence of injured Thomas
Spencer, Brighouse found a way through the left hand side to score, with
the first half ending 18-0. After a rousing team talk Hillsborough came
out and took the play to Brighouse, and despite having some missed
chances finished the second half 6-4 victors, after a brilliant try from
Stefan Kazmierski and the conversion coming from Captain Thomas Haycox.
Much to the delight of the good cotingent of travelling supporters. A
fantastic debut performance came from Adam Brook and in only his second
game Joe Lidster took the accolade Man of the Match

SHEFFIELD HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS U13 56, WYKE U13 0
(Report by Andy
Vivian)
Hawks were looking for their first win of the season and came out with
renewed confidence after a rousing pre-match talk from assistant coach
Rob Burns to dominate the match from start to finish. The Hawks were at
full strength against a spirited 9 man Wyke team and playing with some
expansive football and good handling, Hawks found plenty of room out
wide to score 6 unanswered tries to lead 28 - nil at half time. Pick of
the tries was scored by man-of-the-match Stefan Kazmerski on the wing.
Hawks dropped to 10 players at the start of the second half but Wyke had
no answer to Hawks' powerful running and much improved defence with
forwards and back notching up a further 7 tries. Hawks played
entertaining rugby mixing up their attacking play to good effect. There
were excellent performances and support play from James Whaling, Cory
Vivian, Jo Bell, Jonno Burns, Danny Wilson and Liam Hample. Try scorers
were Stefan Kazmerski, Nathan Wood, Adam Brooks, Ryan Matthews, Thomas
Spencer, Josh Newell and Daniel Horsfield. The final score Hawks 56,
Wyke 0 was greeted with a congratulatory phone call from the Manager and
the Coach who were in Southern France.

SHEFFIELD HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS U13 28 QUEENS KNIGHTS 18
Boosted by the previous week’s victory, the Hawks started full of
confidence against a strong Queen’s Knights team. Daniel Horsfield’s
strong aggressive running was rewarded with two quick tries, both
converted by ‘ace kicker’ Ryan Matthews. However, Queen’s are not a team
to lie down and by half time they had edged into a slender two point
lead. Both teams battled for second half supremacy with the Hawks
getting the upper hand through excellent team work and playing
controlled, disciplined rugby. Tries from Adam Brooks, Ryan Matthews and
Jono Burns sealed a much deserved victory for the Hawks. Man of the
match, Ryan Matthews, was denied converting all five tries as his final
kick struck the upright. A fine spirited performance from the whole
team.

SHEFFIELD HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS U13 22, Brighouse Rangers U13 18
Unbeaten in 2005, Hawks U13’s went into the game full of confidence only
to find themselves a try down within a few minutes. However, this is not
the frail, fragile Hawks team that started the season, there is far more
character and resolve within this revitalised squad of players.
Following some excellent support work Daniel Horsefield brought the
Hawks level running through the disorganised Brighouse defence. Hawks
then took command of the first half with strong tackling and aggressive
running from the forward trio of Thomas Spencer, Josh Newell and the
man-of-the-match Daniel Wilson. Liam Hample ran in the try of the game,
a sixty yard burst through the defence from the back of the scum. Ryan
Matthews’ goal took the Hawks into a 10:4 lead. Further tries from Jono
Burns and Daniel Horsefield consolidated the Hawks dominance of the
first half; however, a spirited drive resulted in a try for Brighouse
leaving the game at 18:8 going into the break. A very different
Brighouse team came out in the second half, full of controlled
aggression and determination. Within minutes of the restart Brighouse
had ran in two unanswered tries, one being converted making the scores
even. Hawks looked shaken by the onslaught, but with Cory Vivian and
Adam Brook showing maturity in the centre of the park and hard work from
the back division of Nathan Wood, Billy Chappell, Joe Bell and James
Whaling, the Hawks raised their game, constantly putting pressure on the
Brighouse defence. There was a twenty minute spell of highly combative
rugby (played in great spirit) as Hawks pushed for the victory. With
only minutes left, Daniel Horsefield completed his hat-trick of tries
with a trade mark powerful run into the corner ensuring a 22:18 victory.
That’s three wins on the trot from the U13’s who are starting to show a
real TEAM ethic with plenty of character and discipline.

CLAYTON U13 42 SHEFFIELD HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS U13 8
A depleted 11-man Hawks team took on a full squad of 22 players from
table-topping Clayton. With two big props, Clayton quickly established
their superiority, running-in four converted tries, three of which took
advantage of the overlap; Hawks suffering purely from their lack of
numbers. Hawks refused to be downhearted and showed great confidence and
ability trying to pass the ball out-wide. Before the break their efforts
were justly rewarded as Adam Brook took-on the Clayton defence, powering
over from ten yards-out. 24:4 at half time. At the start of the second
half it was again Clayton’s ‘big guns’ running straight through the
outnumbered Hawks defence with two converted tries. But Hawks soon
regained their composure and started to assert real pressure on the
Clayton back line. Powerful plays from Daniel Wilson, Josh Newell and
the returning Thomas Haycox, constantly made ground on an energy sapping
pitch. The second half work rate and stamina was rewarded as the back
line got the ball out to Nathan Wood who jinked his way over the
try-line from twenty yards. As the Hawks inevitably tired, Clayton
ran-in a final try to finish the scoring at 42:8. Man-of-the-match went
to Adam Brook for his crunching tackles and numerous aggressive drives
with the ball. For the Hawks U13’s, this might have been the first
defeat in 2005, but in terms of effort, skill and TEAM SPIRIT there were
surely eleven Hawks winners.

QUEEN’S KNIGHTS U13 18, SHEFFIELD HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS U13 40
This was a welcome return to competitive rugby against a weakened
ten-man Queen’s Knights. Hawks soon turned their numerical advantage
into points with Daniel Horsefield running-in two tries. Thomas Haycox
converting one of the tries. It was Haycox that scored the Hawks third
try with a powerful drive under the posts. Ryan Matthews converted. A
spirited Queen’s team rallied taking advantage of a rusty Hawks defence
to score a converted try just before the break. Hawks led 16:6 at half
time. At the start of the second half the Hawks offensive play was
inventive and well executed with many training ground moves being put
into practice. Hawks dominance was translated into a hat-trick of tries
from Adam Brook with Haycox and Matthews (2) converting. Hawks defence
still allowed Queen’s far too much freedom as they rarely moved of the
defensive line (back to defensive drills boys!!). To Queen’s credit they
took full advantage of the sloppy defence with two converted tries. Man
of the match, Liam Hamre, scored the try of the game with a 60 yard
break from the back the scrum. A Haycox conversion gave the Hawks a
40:18 victory. That’s four wins out of five in 2005.

SHEFFIELD HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS U13 6, Queensbury U13 20
Firstly a big ‘thank you’ to Dinnington Rugby Union Club for hosting
this ‘home’ fixture; we can certainly recommend the post match homemade
meat pie - excellent!. The play on the pitch was just as tasty, with
Queensbury putting out a physically powerful team with plenty of talent
and stacks of aggression (the hooker had to have his fist bandaged at
the end of the match!). Queensbury expected to dominate the twelve-man
Hawks with plenty of early intimidation. Hawks are made of sterner stuff
and answered the bully-boy tactics in the best way possible; a neat
passing play finished off with a forceful drive over the line from
Daniel Horsfield. The dependable Ryan Matthews converted, 6:0 in the
first five minutes. Queensbury picked-out Horsfield for special
attention, cutting down Hawk’s offensive drives. They also started to
use their extra man and ran-in three unconverted tries in the corner
taking a half time lead of 6:12. The second half was dominated by
Queensbury’s heavy weights driving into the Hawks defence. There were
some big body tackles from Thomas Haycox and Cory Vivian, with Adam
Brooks chipping-in with a bit of ‘pay-back’. Again Queensbury used the
extra man to score two further unconverted tries in the corner. Hawks
did have their chances with some impressive breaks from man of the
match, Daniel Wilson, supported by the ever impressive Liam Hamre. Size
and body strength won the day for Queensbury, but this was a very
encouraging performance from the Hawks – a bit more work on the tackle
bags and they’ll be back to winning ways. Final score 6:20.

ILLINGWORTH U13 40, SHEFFIELD HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS U13 14
With several players away on holiday the Hawks could only field 11
players against a full strength Illingworth team. The lack of numbers
soon took its toll as Illingworth ran-in three converted tries. There
was certainly no shortage of courage and determination within the 11-man
Hawks team as they started to claw their way back into the game. After
several drives from Daniel Wilson and Daniel Horsfield the Hawks were
within two yards of the line enabling Jono Burns to scoot over under a
pile of desperate defenders. From the restart Ryan Matthews gave the
Hawks great field position on the opposition’s ten yard line. Cory
Vivian made a darting run for the line and with three defenders
smothering him somehow managed to stretch every inch of his body to
gently place the ball down over the try-line; 18:8. In the ten minute
spell before half-time great rugby was played by both sides with some
strong defensive work from Billy Chappell and Nathan Wood. The second
half was even better than the first with enterprising play from both
teams. As the Hawks tired the big Illingworth pack ran in further tries
taking the score to 40:8. However, the Hawks found their second wind and
for the last fifteen minutes of the game totally dominated the play with
Stefan Kazmerski and man-of-the-match Liam Hample putting-in some
impressive runs. The pressure was finally rewarded as Daniel Horsfield
burst through a sturdy Illingworth defence to score a well deserved try;
Ryan Matthews converted. A special mention for Thomas Spencer and Joe
Bell who were both carrying injuries throughout the game, but guts and
team spirit kept them on the pitch. Final score 40:14, defeated but by
no means beaten – with a full squad the Hawks U13’s are more than a
match for any team.
Sunday 17th April
Queensbury U13 38, SHEFFIELD HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS U13 12
Table topping Queensbury had to fight really hard to beat a strong Hawks
team and the score does not reflect just how close a game it was. The
Hawks fielded a full team and even had the luxury of a substitute (much
needed on a heavy leg sapping pitch) with new man, Cory Hansom making
his debut in the back row. Queensbury quickly built-up a 10:0 lead with
some well worked drives. Playing against the wind and uphill, the Hawks
found it hard to break out of their own half, but with strong drives
from Daniel Horsfield, Liam Hamre and Adam Brooks they established good
field position. The very impressive Cory Hansom stormed through the
sturdy Queensbury defence to score under the posts for the ‘tanned’
Thomas Haycox to convert. Hawks came under intense pressure and but for
big tackling from Joe Bell, Nathan Wood and Stefan Kazmerski Queensbury
threatened to over-run the Hawks defence. Toward the end of the first
half the Queensbury pressure took its toll as they ran in three tries
(two converted) to take a half time lead of 26:6. Against the run of
play Queensbury scored first in the second half stretching their lead to
32:6. From then on it was all Hawks pressure as they forced the
Queensbury defence onto the back foot. Jono Burns scooted over from two
yards to score a well deserved try for a spirited Harks team. Ryan
Matthew comfortably converted. From the restart Ryan’s clever short kick
into the mud was pounced on by a brave Cory Vivian setting-up another
period of constant Hawks possession. Hawks continued to dominate the
game with big runs from Daniel Wilson and great support from the hard
working Billy Chappell and James Whaling. Queensbury broke away with a
converted try against the run of play to secure a 38:12 win. The game
was played in a wonderful spirit where big hits were given and taken in
equal measure. If this Hawks squad stays together for next season we
will be treated to some top class rugby down at Hillsborough.

SHEFFIELD
HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS U13’s 64 Wyke U13’s 0
12 tries ; 9 different try scorers; 8
conversions: Nil for the opposition
Great way to end the league season.
Just 24 hours after defeating Derby
50:14 in a 9 a-side friendly, Hawks U13’s played their last league
match of the season against Wyke. Straight from the Hawks kick-off
deep into Wyke’s in-goal, the oppositions defence was put under
intense pressure by the physical presence of Cory Hansom resulting
in the ball running loose for the supporting Cory Vivian to pick-up
an easy try within the first 15 seconds. From the restart Ryan
Matthews gave Wyke’s back line more problems with his accurate long
kick. Hawks held Wyke’s drives comfortably within their own 20 yard
line and once they had regained possession Liam Hamre jinked over
the try-line with Matthews converting. Again from the restart Wyke
fumbled giving the ball and field position to a rampant Hawks. This
set the pattern for the entire game, with Matthews deep kicks being
chased down by the energetic Hansom, Horsfield and Hamre (a real
‘Triple H’ assault). The dominant Hawks ran-in further tries from
Jono Burns, Thomas Spencer, Daniel Horsfield, Cory Hansom and Daniel
Wilson before the half time whistle saved the Wyke try-line from
further punishment. Half time 38:0. Wyke started the second half
with a bit more spirit but were soon on the back foot as the hard
working Hawks put in numerous big tackles and Adam Brooks controlled
the use of the ball in attack. Hawks reasserted their superiority as
Thomas Haycox powered through the Wyke defence to score under the
posts. Wyke lost their discipline with several sly, cowardly punches
aimed at Hawks players. But that didn’t stop Hawks pilling on the
pressure and the points as Hansom, the impressive debutante Dale
Mulligan (two tries) and Burns ran-in tries under the sticks. The
hard working Joe Bell and James Whaling kept the attacks flowing
with neat swift passing and Whaling was unlucky not to score. With
Matthews notching 8 conversions the final score of 64:0 was just
reward for this impressive Hawks team. The defence was solid with
hard hitting tackles and the attacks were a Coach’s delight.
Manager, Ian Seville and Coach, Richard Haycox, have galvanised
these players into a spirited team; who knows what they can achieve
next season. In a match where all 13 Hawks players dominated their
opposite number, the man-of-the-match award went to Ryan Matthews
for his superb kicking giving Hawks consistent field position. A
special mention for Dale Mulligan who in his first match for the
Hawks showed fine fighting spirit and camaraderie at its best;
thanks Dale.
Hawks soar at
Illingworth Rugby Festival (18th June 2005)
Match reports submitted by Rob Burns
Hillsborough’s U13 squad put-in some
storming performances at the annual festival of rugby at
Illingworth. After four hard fought games the Hawks were desperately
unlucky to miss-out on a place in the final. Having finished in
equal second place in the league games (10 mins each way), it went
to an analysis of the for and against column’s. Hawks with a plus 12
difference were pipped at the post by the host club (on plus 13).
Illingworth went on to be convincingly beaten in the final by the
dominant West Bowling. The disappointment was lessened when captain,
Thomas Haycox, sprayed his team mates with a bottle of bubbly!! Many
thanks to all that came along to share in a wonderful day; it was
great to so many people supporting the boys.
West Bowling 24 Hawks 10
First game of the tournament and West Bowling run-in two
converted tries in the first five minutes. Hawks, showing great
resolve against the festival favourites, strike back with powerful
running from Horsfield, Town and Hamre. Hawks pressure soon finds
its reward with Hanson’s strength taking him over the line for two
tries (Matthews converting from wide). At 12:10 the game could have
gone either way but West Bowling’s long-legged wingers won the day
with a final brace of tries (both converted).
Illingworth 8 Hawks 14
The host team put the first points on the board with an
unconverted try having put Hawks under pressure from the kick-off.
Mulligan, with one of his trade mark aggressive drives soon puts
Hawks on level terms as he barged through the Illingworth team. Both
defences were resolute with big tackles from Watson, Haycox and
Vivian. Hawks kept Illingworth on the back foot with Hanson cutting
through their defence for another try. This was followed by the best
try of the tournament. Ten yards short of the line on fifth and
last, Brookes put in a delicate chip for Wilson, leaping like a
salmon, to catch and ground the ball in one elegant movement. The
conversion took Hawks in to a 12:4 lead; Illingworth scored the
final try in the dying seconds.
Brighouse 4 Hawks 26
With confidence high Hawks were quickly into their stride as
Hanson and Mulligan quickly ran in tries (Brookes converting second
try). Good place kicking from the restarts kept Brighouse under
repeated pressure. Hard work from the backs Kazmierski, Bell and
Whaling kept Brighouse penned in their own half. Hawks dominance was
rewarded with further tries from Horsfield and Matthews. Mulligan
rounded off Hawks fine display with another try.
Queensbury 8 Hawks 6
As they started their final match of the ‘league’ format, Hawks
knew that a win would ensure them a place in the final. This was a
rugged game from the outset with no quarter given. Burns and Wood
worked hard in defence and the fitness levels of both teams was
tested on this gloriously sunny day. First blood went to Hawks as
Horsfield sprinted through the tight Queensbury defence to score a
converted try. Both team matched each other for effort and ability
in a ding-dong battle. Queensbury came back to score out wide
bringing them to within two points. In the final minutes of the
game, Queensbury came out of a scrum with the ball and somehow
forced their way over the line to steal victory from the Hawks.
