Hillsborough Hawks v. Newsome
”Newsome came to win today and
they did just that. Hawks were below par, which was a disappointment
after a promising start had been made against Kings Cross. Although
not his best game Daniel Hawksworth did try to lead by example in
the forwards. Hillsborough need to move on, become focused again and
realise this is the Premier division"

Queensbury
Thornton 32 Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks 18
( Coach’s Report - Bernie Hunter)
Hawks Under 14's managed to kick
start the season with a spirited performance at Queensbury.
Sparkling handling resulted in Khoza scoring from the first scrum of
the game. Try's followed at regular intervals during the first half
with Khoza taking a second and Vivian bagging one, resulting in a
half time advantage of 14-10. The sides swapped scores early in the
second half with Daniel Hawksworth responsible for the Hawks scoring
a try that led to him unfortunately being injured in the process.
This Hawks loss was the turning point as Queensbury T squeezed
advantage on elementary errors particularly with regard to the
return kick off. Queenbury finished as the stronger side, but the
32-18 score-line largely flattered them in a good natured contest. A
win will surely not elude the Hawks any longer if Tyers, Hawksworth,
Khoza, Crosswaite, Bowler, continue to sparkle. All are in
contention for the Man of the Match Trophy to be awarded Tuesday.
Full Report: The Hillsborough Hawks under 14's visited
Queensbury on Sunday looking to try and get their season underway
following two opening defeats to the strongest teams in the premier
division. With the benefit of a strong wind behind them the Hawks
found touch with the kick off and from the resultant scrum passed
the ball out wide for Desi Khoza to squeeze in at the corner. With
the conversion attempt drifting wide the Hawks were 4 - 0 up. The
lead didn't last long as with their first attack Queensbury went
through some slack defence to equalise the scores. Defences on both
sides tightened up and it took an opportunist dive from acting half
from Ben Vivian to break the deadlock. Sam Swire again went close
with the conversion attempt from the touchline but in a carbon copy
try moments later Queensbury levelled things again with their scrum
half diving over. With the conversion kicked Queensbury held a
slender 10 - 8 lead. A scrum move by the Hawks provided enough room
for Desi Khoza to roar through the Queensbury defence and score
under the posts. Sam Swire made no mistake this time and the Hawks
led 14 - 10 at half time. The second half carried on where the first
had finished with strong defence from both sides. A strong cross
field run from Hawks' captain Daniel Hawksworth ended with him
diving over for a fine try but unfortunately he injured himself in
the process and played no further part in the game. The conversion
kick was straight on line but the strong wind blew it back in field.
At 18 - 10 up the Hawks were well in command but the lack of their
captain and a number of other bumps and bruises put paid to their
chances of closing out the game. Queensbury scored a try too wide
out to convert and then regained possession after a kick off was
picked up in an off side position by the Hawks. From the resultant
penalty Queensbury scored again and this time converted the try to
take them into a lead that they were never in danger of losing.
Their kick off bounced over the Hawks defence and although the Hawks
regained possession from the resultant drop out Queensbury rounded
the game off with two late tries, both converted to give them a
flattering winning margin of 32 - 18. The Hawks could take great
heart from the game which, but for the loss of their captain and the
absence through injury of their starting prop forwards, they could
and probably should have won.
Final Score - Queensbury/Thornton Juniors 32 (6 tries, 4 goals)
Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks 18 (4 tries - D. Khoza (2), B. Vivian,
D. Hawksworth, 1 goal - S. Swire)

West
Bowling 24 Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks 10 : (Report:
Bernie Hunter)
An injury hit Hawks squad put in a
patchy performance away at West Bowling. Hawks started strongly when
acting captain Eddie Battye powered over. West Bowling quickly tied
up the scores before adding two more tries to lead 14-4 at half
time. It was imperative the Hawks scored first after the restart and
Battye duly obliged with Swire taking on the extras. A penalty
conceded from the kick off was to take the momentum away from the
Hawks as West Bowling racked up 10 more points without reply to end
up worthy winners. Hawks were left to rue a number of unenforced
errors which need to be cut out as they seek that elusive first win.

Hillsborough Hawks 18 West Bowling 0:
(Report : Ian Swire)
Hawks U 14s looked for revenge
after last week’s defeat and they came out with almost all guns
blazing. Superb defence work kept the game scoreless until Bradley
Emery came off the bench and with only his second touch smashed over
the line for the only score of the first half. The second half
remained a tight affair with defences remaining on top before Emery
scored two quick fire tries out wide to stretch the Hawks lead to 12
points to nil . A superb chase back by Desire Khoza to stop West
Bowling’s number 13 just short of the try line raised the Hawks for
the final quarter. A break from Dan Hawksworth left the defence in
disarray to score under the posts for Sam Swire to convert and
complete an impressive 18 points to nil win. This was the first win
of the season and with displays like this many more will surely
follow.

Hillsborough Hawks 6 Ovenden 18
(Report by Bernie Hunter)
The spectators were treated to
another close match when the Hawks entertained Ovenden. Defences
were on top throughout and Ovenden opened the scoring when a wide
ball allowed the winger to cross in the corner, Sam Swire tormented
Ovenden with a number of penalty kicks and the pressured finally
told when Emery touched down with Swire converting to make it 6-4. A
fiery second half resulted in Ovenden pulling away and a fine
opportunist try by their full back sealed a hard earned victory.
There was much to be positive about in the Hawks performance and
Khoza, Battye, Crosswaite and Tyers made valuable contributions. Man
of the Match Desire Khoza

Hawks 6 Newsome Panthers 50 (Rnd 2 of the
Yorkshire Cup) (Report B. Hunter)
League leaders Newsome Panthers
provided a stern test in this 2nd round of Yorkshire cup tie. Hawks
alternated between providing determined defence and quite frankly
poor defence. A 26 - 0 half time deficit was a fair reflection as
astute play by the visitors met with an over generous defence. The
second half followed a similar pattern with Newsome notching up
fifty before a strong passage of play saw Khoza registering a high
quality consolation try, Sam Swire added the extras. Daniel
Hawksworth earned Man of the Match. The season now enters a new
phase with the restructuring of the divisions. The Hawks whilst
struggling have recorded a premier league win and should be
optimistic with their chances in league one.

Townville 16 Sheffield
Hillsborough Hawks U14 20
Hawks started the second phase of
the season with a hard fought win at Townville, Castleford. A slick
handling move saw Sheard outflank the defence to register the first
score. The advantage disappeared as Townville tied up the scores on
the stroke of half time. Khoza split the defence 80 metres out and
sprinted to the line with all in his wake, Swire added the extras.
Townville hit back with a try wide out which was well converted to
tie the score at 10 - 10. Sheffield took the game by the scruff of
the neck with tries from Emery and Bowler, Swire converted one.
Again Townville hit back to leave a nail biting finish. The
Sheffield defence was resolute, a hard earned victory.

HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS U14 48 Odsal / Sedbergh 20
[Report Bernie Hunter]
A blustery day and heavy
conditions were no obstacles to the Hawks. A fine attacking
performance resulted in 9 tries as opponents Odsal / Sedbergh were
put to the sword. Birthday boy Brad Emery helped himself to a first
half hat trick. He was ably supported by standoff Sam Swire who
amassed 14 points. At times the Hawks defence fell short of the high
standard set by the attack. Ben Vivian constantly probed and
forwards Hawksworth, Crosswaite and Barona made good yards. Khoza
contributed a brace of tries including a notable solo try to
conclude the game.

QUEENS KNIGHTS 32 SHEFFIELD HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS U14 10
(West Riding Challenge Cup)
Hawks made a slow start against a strong and physical Premier
Division team. After completing 2 determined sets of 6, a weak
Hawks' defence let in 4soft, unanswered tries and the team trailed
22-0 at half time. After the break Hawks came out with renewed
vigour and playing down hill began to compete well. An excellent
movement saw Crosswaite running cross field to find Swire who swung
the ball out for Emery to score. Swire converted. Slack defence saw
2 more Knights' tries before Hawksworth made a telling 30 metre
break, slicing through the Knights' defence and finding Emery in
support the move was foiled inches short of the line. Hawks were not
to be denied and a quick play of the ball resulted in Hawksworth
flying over. Final score Queens Knights 32 Hawks 10.Notable
performances from Hawksworth, Battye, Crosswaite and Khoza. Man of
the match was awarded by Andy Tyers to Ben Vivian.

GUISELY
14 SHEFFIELD HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS U14 46
(Report Bernie Hunter)
An illness ravaged Hawks squad
made their first visit to Guisley. Lacking 8 first team regulars
Hawks handed first time starts to Orwin and Ashton with Faulkener
making his first appearance at scrum-half.. Aided by a favourable
slope Hawks were first on the score sheet when Swire’s cross field
kick picked out Hunter who registered his first touchdown of the
season, a feat Bell repeated later in the first half. A quick brace
of tries followed from Emery and Hawksworth. The latter made the
most of his switch to centre registering five tries in a power
packed performance. The Hawks led 24 nil but conceded a try on half
time which meant Guisley with the slope advantage were still in the
game. Despite the loss of Ashton the Hawks put in a powerful second
half display adding 22 points with Tyers and Battye adding to
Hawksworth’s scoring exploits. A last minute try from Guisely was
the only blemish. Hawks were expected to win but this was a team
performance of the highest order. Orwin made a superb deut running
hard in attack and resolute in defence.
GUISELY 14
SHEFFIELD HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS U14 46
(Match report Ian Swire)
Despite being under strength, the Hawks started well with two quick
fire tries. Dominic Hunter being first to a Sam Swire cross kick,
then Dan Hawksworth forcing over on the opposite touchline. Guiseley
came back into the game. But the Hawks scored next with Hawksworth
going under the posts for Swire to convert. Jack Bell scored in the
corner fro a Sam Swire pass and Ben Tyers scored a fine try. Despite
playing up hill and loosing Phillip Ashton to injury the Hawks also
dominated the second half, with Hawksworth taking his try tally to
five, Battye and Emery scoring. The final score 46/14,fine
performances from the whole team with special mention to Nathan
Faulkner and Simon Orwin who filled in well for injured players. Man

DEWSBURY CELTIC 24 SHEFFIELD HILLSBOROUGH
HAWKS U14 14 (Report:Bernie
Hunter )
A sparkling attacking display was
undermined by a lack lustre defensive effort as Hawks crashed 24-14
away at Dewsbury Celtic. Hawksworth completed a sweeping cross-field
move to crash in at the flag for an early 4-0 laed. Paper thin
defence allowed Celtic's right centre to cancel the advantage the
conversion nudged Celtic ahead. Hawks replied with the try of the
season as Khoza's pass put Fox into space, the later showed the
defence a clean pair of heels to score under the posts, Tyers
converted to give the Hawks a 10-6 half time lead. The Hawks pack
didn't have the heart for the uphill battle as Celtic scored at will
on the flanks before Hawksworth completed a brace with a late
consolation effort. Battye was the standout forward in a below par
performance. Man of the Match Edward Battye

DEWSBURY CELTIC 28
(Report :Ian Swire )
An inability to control the ball in the first half cost the Hawks
Under 14's dearly as they slipped at home to Dewsbury Celtic.
Unforced handling errors handed field position to a Dewsbury side
that were good enough to exploit the situation with four first half
tries. The Hawks actually opened the scoring when Daniel Sheard was
the first to a deft sixth tackle kick through from Ben Tyers on the
right wing. The errors meant that the Hawks had very little
opportunity to add to that score and went in at half time 18-4 down.
The second half was a much closer contest and involved much end to
end play with both sides scoring two tries. Dewsbury were first to
strike to increase their lead but from then on the Hawks exerted
great pressure on the Dewsbury line with Eddie Battye and Brad Emery
forcing their way over with Sam Swire converting one of the tries.
The young Hawks' discipline was first class as the referee
continually penalised Dewsbury for breaches. Full time score was
28-14 to Dewsbury. Daniel Hawksworth was awarded Man of The Match by
the Dewsbury coach.
2nd report from
Bernie Hunter
The reverse of the previous weeks fixture saw Hawks take on an
experienced Dewsbury Celtic side on home soil. The first half saw
Hawks pinned down in their own half by a kicking display of the
highest order. Despite registering the first score, when Sheard
touched down a pin point Swire kick, the Hawks fought a rear guard
action to rebuff the Celtic onslaught. A failure to return restarts
following well executed tries cost the Hawks dear with Dewsbury
registering three first half scores to turn around with a well
deserved 18-4 lead. When Dewsbury started the second half where they
left off in the first the writing was on the wall as a heavy home
defeat looked inevitable. This was not to be as the Hawks rallied
aided by a series of penalties, and put the Dewsbury defence to the
sword. First Emery and later Battye made periods of pressure count
with Swire adding a conversion. With the score at 14-22 Dewsbury
made the game safe with a late score. This was a performance that
the Hawks have every reason to be proud of. Hawksworth took the man
of the match with a non-stop display, Khosa and Batteye both put in
eye catching performance but the most pleasing aspect of the game
was the team effort and never say die second half revival. The U14s
may have lost their momentum for the moment but they will still have
a say in the distribution of honours later in the season.

TOWNVILLE 38
SHEFFIELD HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS U14 6
(Bernie Hunter)
Hawks returned to Townville where they
had already recorded a hard fought league victory to contest a
supplementary cup quarter final tie. Unfortunately the game plan
which had yielded the league points was cast away as the Hawks
gifted Townville possession, field position and inevitably points
with a mix of unforced errors, poor kicking and inept decision
making. As early as the second minute a speculative kick by
Townville resulted in a simple try as Tyers was caught in
possession. Handling errors resulted in two more first half tries
plus a conversion to leave the Hawks facing a 14-0 half time
deficit. The second half followed the pattern of the first with the
Hawks defence far too often outflanked and out thought. Captain
Hawksworth worked hard and the consolation try was just reward, the
effort a 80m dash form the base of the scrum would have befitted a
far better team display. Admittedly the Hawks squad was not at full
strength but this cannot paper over the cracks which will need
addressing if the season is not to lose its early promising impetus.

HEADINGLEY U14 26
(Report Andy Vivian)
Hawks were looking to get their season
back on track against the league leaders and knew they had to raise
their game to get a result. A close first quarter saw Hawks begin to
gain the ascendancy and were narrowly denied a couple of tries.
Against the run of play, Headingley broke quickly from a scrum in
their own 20 to run in an unopposed try. Undaunted, Hawks continued
to up the pressure and for the rest of the half denied Headingley
possession and dominated the game, completing phase after phase of
near perfect sets of six. After a subtle kick ahead by Sam Swire,
captain Daniel Hawksworth gathered and stormed to the try line
brushing aside the defence. This was followed by a Brad Emery dive
over from short range with the Headingley defence in disarray. Sam
Swire converted both tries to a first half which Hawks had dominated
but the scoreline of 12-6 was scant reward for the team's efforts
and the lead would have been greater but for stout defence from
Headingley. Notable performances were had by forwards, Daniel
Hawksworth, Eddie Battye, Brad Emery and Rikki Latham. From the
restart, Hawks were up against an invigorated team and all the
pressure was coming from Headingley. Under relentless pressure and
denied the ball, Hawk's luck began to run out and with injuries to
Desire Khoza ,Simon Orwin and Tim Cotterill, Headingley were able to
exploit gaps in the Hawk's defence, finishing the game strongly
against a tired but defiant Hawks scoring 4 unanswered tries. Full
back Ben Tyers, put in his best performance of the season, and
despite continual testing by the Headingley attack, he was not found
wanting. The Hawks team will look back with disappointment knowing
that the final score was not a true reflection of the game but
equally this will give them added heart going into the next game.

SHARKS 10 HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS 28
(Report Dominic Hunter)
Hillsborough Hawks travelled to
Huddersfield on the back of a weather imposed break. The initial
stages were a tight affair until Swire sold the Sharks defence a
dummy before crossing under the posts, he easily added the
conversion. Crosswaite put in an absolutely brilliant performance on
his comeback from injury and he was rewarded with a try, which when
converted by Swire established a handy 12-0 half time lead. The
early part of the second half followed a similar pattern Baraona’s
introduction gave the Hawks plenty of go forward and it was not long
before Emery powered over, the conversion by Swire put the Hawks
18-0 ahead. Huddersfield Sharks recorded their first try when their
stand off crossed near enough to the posts for a simple conversion.
This was a jittery time for the Hawks as Huddersfield pushed for a
second score. Hunter touched down in the corner for the Hawks after
some wonderful passing by Hawksworth and Sheard, no conversion was
added to this. Huddersfield then scored again, this time not
converted, at 22-10 the game was still in the balance. A few minutes
from the end Sheard scored to make the game safe, Hawksworth added a
great touchline conversion.

(Report Dominic Hunter)
Hawks show their worth! Hawks faced a
reverse fixture after winning away at Huddersfield last week, they
started the match knowing that they had to win to have any chance of
contesting the league title. The Hawks got off to a poor start,
conceding two converted tries in the early exchanges to leave them
0-12 down. Hawks needed to get back into the game desperately. It
was their inspirational captain Hawksworth who led the way when
scoring for Swire to convert. Hawks kept up the pace and Sheard
swooped in at the corner to touch down, Hawksworth added a
conversion from out wide to tie the game 12-12 at the break. Hawks
had seized the momentum, Crosswaite and Battye scored early second
half tries to establish a 20-12 lead. Huddersfield did not give up
and managed to score an unconverted try. Hawksworth put the game out
of reach by powering over twice to secure his hat trick. Sharks hit
back with a consolation score but it was too late. Hawksworth
deserved his man of the match award for a great 14 point match
winning performance.

HAWKS U14 32 LITTLEBOROUGH U14 26.
(Report by Dominic Hunter)
Hillsborough Hawks U14s started the match against Littleborough U14s
hoping to avoid the problems of letting the opposition build up an
early lead. The match was a four pointer to ease fixture congestion.
Hawks again started the match poorly conceding two converted tries
in the first ten minutes. It took an unconverted try from Battye to
start to rally the Hawks into action. Then moments later
Littleborough crossed over for another converted try to re-establish
their 12 point advantage. Vivian then dived over from dummy half to
score, Hawksworth converting. Crosswaite put in another amazing
performance and his efforts were rewarded with a try. Battye then
crossed the line again to put Hawks 18-16 up at half-time. The
second half didn’t start very well with Hawks conceding a poor try.
To the relief of the Hawks camp Vivian scored to complete his brace
of tries. Emery then scored to put the Hawks 28-22 in the lead.
Battye crossed to complete his hat trick of tries and celebrated in
typical fashion to secure the win for Hillsborough. Littleborough’s
loose forward powered over for his fifth try but it was no more than
a consolation. The final score of 32-26 to Hillsborough Hawks was
enough to ensure their recent good form continued with eight league
points out of a possible eight .

ODSAL SEDBURGH
20 HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS 18
(Report Bernie Hunter)
Hawks' recent impressive run fizzled to a halt under the shadow of
the Odsal floodlights. A threadbare squad battled well in the first
half playing up a steep slope. Two early Odsal tries were cancelled
out by a try from Batteye and a further converted effort from
Hawksworth to tie the scores at 10 all at half time, with the
advantage of the slope to come all looked well. However a
combination of two disallowed tries and poor defence, which allowed
Odsal ten unanswered points, left the Hawks looking down the barrel
of a heavy defeat. A late rally included tries by Khosa and Vivian
and left the Hawks the opportunity of a last gasp conversion to tie
up the scores, sadly Hawksworth promising effort drifted wide. In
the absence of Dom in his bed his old Dad is this week's reporter.

Hillsborough Hawks U14 : 22 Townsville U14: 18
(Report : Dominic Hunter)
Hawks were on the road at Dinnington
because of the regular pitch at Hillsborough being unavailable.
Hawks were desperate to avenge their 38-6 away drubbing at
Townsville. From the kick-off you could tell that both sides wanted
to win this, and the Hawks had the advantage of both slope and a
strong wind. Latham then powered over to record the first score of
the game for Hawks, Swire converted this. Townville then started to
find their feet and scored 3 tries in quick succession, but only one
of these was converted for a 6-14 scoreline. Hawks then were
provided with a lifeline when Vivian dived over the line from
dummy-half, Swire converted. Minutes later Crosswaite scored, and
Swire added the extras. After looking down and out they turned
around against the elements with a 18-14 lead. Hawks started the
second half knowing that they had to defend against a much larger
side who had the advantage of the elements. They were rewarded for
their efforts with a try from Tyers playing in the unaccustomed role
of loose forward. Despite their best efforts Townville could only
manage a single try, Hawks then hung on to the final whistle to earn
a well-deserved victory.

Hillsborough Hawks U14: 8
(Report:Dominic Hunter)
Cougars run Rampant :- Hillsborough visited Keighley for a
‘4pointer’ requiring a win to have any chance of contesting for the
title and promotion. Keighley dominated the first half with three
good tries as the Hawks defence struggled to contain their off
loads. A 14-0 half time lead left the Hawks with a big hill to
climb. Hawks unlocked the Keighley defence when Swire collected his
own kick to feed Hawksworth who put Fox in the corner. Hawksworth
added a second and the Hawks looked to be back in it. The efforts in
seeking a third score left holes in the Hawks’ defence and the
Cougars capitalised to establish a 32-8 winning margin. Cottril
earned man of the match with a good performance, which consisted of
some brilliant tackles, and a few good quality runs.

HEADINGLY U14
48 SHEFFIELD HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS U14 24
(Report by Dominic Hunter)
Hillsborough Hawks travelled to
Headingly wanting to win, Hawks were chasing an end of season
victory. Hawks were extremely aggressive from kick off, with some
brilliant tackles and good runs. Ten minutes into the game Headingly
crossed the line for the first touchdown of the game, this was
converted. Hawks then got straight back into the game with
Hawksworth diving over from close range and this was converted by
Swire. After some good play from Headingly they scored an
unconverted try. Headingly then used the home advantage to establish
a 20-6 lead. On the stroke of halftime Khoza scored to keep
Hillsborough in touch with the home side this left the score at
20-10. Hawks started the second half strongly knowing that they
could win. A Swire cross field kick found Falkner unmarked and he
registered his first try for the club. Headingly re-established
their lead with a fine individual try from their stand off. This try
sparked Headingly into action showing just why they are league
champions. They shot out to a 50-14 lead with some impressive
handling. Still the Hawks were not done and a quality handling move
resulted in Battye registering the games final points. The margin of
the defeat did not reflect the team effort put in by the Hawks.
Julie Hawksworth, the team manager summed up the match as a
brilliant team effort by Hillsborough and there were some excellent
individual performances, and the rest of the team would like to
thank Bernie, Julie, Andy, Ian and the other kind people that have
helped us out. It’s been a great year and hopefully will be repeated
next season.
