Hawk’s U16 smash world record!
Hillsborough Hawks U16 continued their preparations for the first ever youth tour to Serbia by smashing the official Guinness World Record for the number of tackles in one hour. On a cold and wet Saturday morning the squad roared on by their supporters faced a daunting task of surpassing Cranleigh RFC’s longstanding record of 1 979 tackles in one hour. Not only did they beat it they pushed the bar right out with a total of 3 636 tackles, at a rate of nearly a tackle a second.
Coach Bernie Hunter said
“It’s a pretty simple idea but the draw of appearing in print as a World Record holder really caught the boys. They have all raised a significant sum in sponsorship. The squad were under no illusions about how difficult the task would be especially in those conditions, it has been a first class exercise in teamwork and a superb foundation for the forthcoming tour”
The team will have to wait for a period of up to six weeks for the Guinness team to verify the attempt.
Tour manager Julie Hawksworth commented
“It is important the boys themselves were involved in the fund-raising. The sponsorship will go to providing tour uniform and travel expenses in Sebia. The uniform is important as the squad are to attend an official reception at the residence of Her Majesty's Ambassador to Belgrade, H.E. Stephen Wordsworth. They are representing the club, their chosen sport and the country”
Three main fund raising events remain. On March 10th they will be assisting shoppers at Morrison’s store Ecclesfield , a Serbian Dinner (featuring Gary Hetherington and Mark Aston) will be held on March 15th and is a virtual sell out and finally the squad will do a bucket collection on March 16th at the Eagles V Castleford game. There are still plenty of opportunities to support this cause. The tour has received generous sponsorship through Ability Insurance Services, Central Gas Services, JPB Contracting, Sivell Engineering and Woodside Travel.
