Hawks off to a flying start first game of their season.
10 try extravaganza with Proctor & Hawksworth
bagging 8 of them.
Hawks started with a bare 13, no subs. Watching the
game you would have thought we were four points behind all through
the game, they did not let up. Defence was superb, in attack breath
taking.
With a first half score of 26 - nil, confidence was high. James
Proctor ( Man of the Match ) scoring 4 tries ( 16 points ) in the
first half, ably supported by all his team mates. James worked his
tries well taking every opportunity from scrum to take the ball in
hand from loose forward ( his new preferred position ) and using his
speed and agility to score. Congratulations James on a fantastic
game. Not only did James receive the man of the match award but also
joint top tackler. Lovely to see. Captain Ben Hawksworth using his
new found height and strength scoring one, hell of a determined try.
Brilliant Ben. Rory Wheatcroft converting three to add 6 extra
points.
Second half 'off to a flyer' this time seeing George Thorpe power
his way through a strong defence, close to their line. Well worked
team try, brownie point to George for this one for reading the game
well.

Ben Hawksworth again showing true captaincy by taking them all on.
Another one for Ben. James did the same again working well and
communicating with fellow team mates, quickly followed by another
stormer from Captain Ben H.
Ryan Marritt, using his strength and determination to power through
for a well worked try. Four extras converted by Rory Wheatcroft.
Special mentions, where do I start. Dan West's tackling saw him
'rag-doll' the opposition where ever he could. He just doesn't leave
them alone. Brilliant work rate Dan. If I am not mistaken Dan went
from marker 5 times on the trot and nailed his opposite number each
and every time.
Josh trying his hand as fullback and didn't he do well. Great work
rate Josh. We'll see if we can get the ball to you more next game as
when you had the ball you made great ground. Lovely stuff Josh.
Newcomer Tommy Laughton showed true Hawks spirit. Tackling SUPERB.
His game awareness as though he had been playing all his life. A
great addition to our now strong under 13's team. Welcome aboard
Tommy, great to have you with us.
Danny Smith defended his wing extremely well. Bit starved of ball as
Hawks used the 'big lads' through the middle to make their ground
today. Great tackling Danny, good support.
Ryan not only scored for his team but found himself tackling and
second in at every opportunity. Will send you a photo shortly Ry

. Fitness improving makes for an easier game. You are
doing great Ryan. Keep it up.
David 'BIG-LAD' Brown, true to form took the ball at every chance he
got. He was like a tank powering through. Great work rate David keep
it up.
Vice Captain Myles Woods. Whenever he could he did exactly what he
does best, got involved. Also got a great photo Myles reminiscent of
a game you played a couple of seasons ago where you took six
Huddersfield players from half way to score. Similar photo. Lovely
to see your fitness up.
Joseph Calverley. Perhaps not the quickest player, certainly one of
the most determined we have. If they're not wearing a red shirt, he
has 'em. Great work Joseph, keep it up.
Ben Mahmoud again using his incredible strength to power through all
before him. Right attitude, have all Hawks under 13's have,
no-nonsense attitude being his asset. Keep it up Ben M, you're going
to have a great season as with your team mates.
Rory Wheatcroft converted 5 tries today.

Try and get the try under the posts lads and
give Rory a better chance with the kicks. Joint top tackler with
James, Dan West one point off joining James & Rory at triple share
top tackler. Rory's work rate superb. Well done.
George Thorpe. Quiet, but very effective. His try caught Keighley on
the hop, his all round performance saw George leave the field of
play with a smile knowing ' he'd had a good one'. Well done George.

Spectators were treated to unbelievable all round team effort and
fantastic tackling. Keighley never left their half, Hawks were all
over them at every part of their game.
Team:Josh Plester; Dan West;
George Thorpe; Ryan Marritt; Danny Smith; Rory Wheatcroft; Tommy
Laughton; David Brown; Myles Wood (VC); Joseph Calverley; Ben
Mahmood; Ben Hawksworth (C); James Proctor.
Scorers: Tries - Procter (5); Hawksworth (3); Marritt;
Thorpe; Goals : Wheatcroft 5/10
Joint top tacklers:- James Proctor & Rory Wheatcroft, Dan West one
tackle behind.
MAN OF THE MATCH - James Proctor (
chosen by parents of players )
FANTASTIC TEAM EFFORT HAWKS !
Note from editor:
An excellent performance which was
enjoyable to watch. Credit must be given to Keighley for NEVER
giving up, and their coach who tried hard to keep them focused. The
match was a bit "Men v Boys" style, but not all matches will be as
easy. The Keighley lads took some hard knocks, but got up and kept
trying. They will get better. Hawks, don't fall into the trap of
overconfidence now. Good to see the line being used. Good to see
chip kicks being chased and the "team" support at every opportunity.
Encouraging each other is such a bonus. Finally, I know not everyone
(coachwise) agrees but when you score tries, if the opposition is
not swarming over you, try to give your kicker a chance...the nearer
the posts the easier the kick, the more points you score and more
importantly, if it is a close game you need successful kicks! Well
done. I enjoyed the game.

SHEFFIELD HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS U13s (0) 0
OVENDEN U13s (20) 30 ...
24th September 2006
( West Riding Cup )
Different game to the last Hawks played
with a 50 - 0 score line in their favour against Keighley. Hawks
with bare 13 players ( no-subs ) took the kick off and battled
non-stop against a well defending Ovenden team who were unstoppable
whenever they took ball in hand. Brave attempts made by Hawks in
their tackling, sheer strength and power from their opposition saw
Ovenden with a 20 - 0 score at half time. Second half saw Dan West
run almost full length of the field, only to be stopped 10 metres
short of the line. Great to see Kirk Atherton & Nathan Sharpe back
on form and playing well. Top tackler and Man of the match for Hawks
- 'Rory Wheatcroft', closely followed by David Brown for both
accolades.
Sheffield
Hillsborough Hawks U13's (24) 32 Keighley Cougars U13s (4)
20...8th October 2006
Hawks set off in
superb style seeing prop forward David Brown storm over the line
with only two minutes play gone to put Hawks on the score sheet.
Two minutes later Hawks saw George Thorpe pass to Dan West for him
to skittle his way through to put another 4 points on for Hawks.
Both converted by Rory Wheatcroft. Keighley quickly took matters in
hand, tightened their defence and put up a good fight, making their
tackles count. Hawks responded again seeing Thorpe pass to Dan W
twice more to score two more lovely worked tries. Both converted
Wheatcroft. Keighley came back with a try, making the half time
score: 24 - 4
Keighley did not
give up the fight putting 3 more tries and two conversions on their
score card.
Once
again Thorpe working with Dan W ensured Dan got his 4th try of the
game. Fantastic work and well deserving on his 'Man of The Match'
award for his all round skill, determination and effort.
Hawks were
flagging but a stray pass saw a knock-on into the welcoming arms of
Rory W, scoring to take Hawks final tally to: 32 - 20.
'Top tackler'
Captain Ben Hawksworth, one tackle behind Nathan Sharpe , special
mention Ben Mahmoud for his hard work throughout the game & strong
tackling.

Hawks
were hoping for a repeat of last seasons victories over Meltham All
Blacks. They came away disappointed, lack of fitness being their
downfall once again. First half saw Hawks utilise last weeks man of
the match winner Dan West twice to score two well run tries solo.
Great speed and evasion used by WEST. Both kicks converted by Rory
Wheatcroft.
Second
half saw a different Meltham. Every play of the ball Meltham nailed
either acting dummy half of first receiver, with style. Hawks
unable to get into their stride watched as Meltham stepped through
an ill equipped Hawks defence to finish the game at 30 - 12.
Man of the match,
due not only to his superb tackling but constant work throughout the
game, RYAN MARRITT.
Top tackler for the Hawks MYLES WOOD with an impressive tackle
count, MARRITT not far behind.

Farnley (12) 12 Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks
U13s (0) 10 ....
5th November
Hawks saw a very much improved Farnley team. Farnley with
19 players all eager to step on the field, Hawks 14 players in total.
First half saw Farnley run through Hawks defence three times. Lack of
effective tackling once more Hawks downfall. Second half saw a more
determined Hawks team take up the challenge pushing up toward Farnley's
line at every opportunity. Scrum-half / Acting Dummy-Half George Thorpe
forced his way low through Farnley's defence, on their line twice to
score two well determined tries for Hawks. One converted by Rory
Wheatcroft.
Last weeks joint 'Man-of-the Match' Ben Mahmoud
showed true Hawks spirit with his great runs and tackling. Mahmoud
winning the MOTM trophy for the second week running.

November 2006
Hawks expecting a tough game, with only one sub on the
bench. They hoped for a better show that last they played Newsome. Hawks
tried their best but the hard tackling by their opponents kept them at
bay. Some good defence was shown by Hawks in part, constant good
tackling by Newsome unnerved Hawks.
Half time score Hawks 0 - Newsome 28
Hawks tried to keep the pressure on against fit opponents. Dan West
scored an amazing try from within their 20 metres all the way through,
brushing aside some good tackle attempts. Rory Wheatcroft converting the
kick.
Man of the Match Nathanial Skeltos,
(playing a year up ) tackled with great determination and assisted his
team mates wherever he could. Great improvement from this new Hawks
player.Hawks being the first team this season to score against Newsome,

Meltham All Blacks U13's (4) 4 - Sheffield
Hillsborough Hawks U13's (0) 20 ...26th
November
What a game, & with only 13 available to play !
First half saw Hawks timidly getting into their stride due to ankle deep
mud covering the whole of the pitch. Early in the first half Meltham
moved the ball down their line to pop one over. Soft try. Hawks defence
then quickly changed to being the best it has been all season, held
Meltham to their 4 point lead at half time:
Half time score Meltham All Blacks 4 - Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks 0
Captain Ben Hawksworth and Vice Captain Myles had stern words with their
team mates at half time and a determined Hawks team came out ready to do
the job they set out to do.
Forward moving Hawks moved their attacking line like clockwork. One
pass, two, three then Tommie Laughton scored his first try for his team.
Spurred on by their efforts the whole team dropped a gear and powered
through with a pass to Dan West who ran three quarters of the pitch to
score. Meltham 4 - Hawks 8. Another fine string of passes saw George
Thorpe do his trademark masterpiece to scurry over Melthams line at
ankle height to put another 4 points on the score card. Rory Wheatcroft
converting. Dan West again ploughed through Melthams defence to run
almost full length of the pitch this time to place the ball directly
under the sticks. Wheatcroft converting.
Debut performance by
Johnny Hatfield. Sheer determination and pride saw this young man win
the 'Man-Of-The-Match' for his valiant efforts throughout his first FULL
game.

Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks (0) 6
Moldgreen (4) 8....10th
December
Unfortunately the game had to be stopped for a long
period in the second half due to a serious neck injury to Ben Mahmood.
The Hawks were not overwhelmed by the physical Moldgreen side and put up
a good display. The second Moldgreen try was contentious and looked very
much as if it had been scored off a knock-on but with exceptional
motivational chats by Dan Hawksworth (Under 16's captain) the Hawks
never gave up. The pressure eventually told on Moldgreen and a clever
kick through put the visitors defence under pressure and as they tried
to escape their ingoal area with a passing move, the ball went loose and
great follow up play saw Man of The Match
Rory Wheatcroft take the opportunity needed and he dived on the ball
to score a deserved try, which he easily converted and gave the Hawks a
real chance. Unfortunately the stoppage due to Ben M being injured had
taken the momentum from the Hawks, but they put on a spirited display
and deserved a share in the spoils of this encounter. An excellent
display, which I enjoyed watching.
Scorer: Rory Wheatcroft - Converted his own try
Man of the Match: Rory Wheatcroft
Unfortunately I do not have the team list. They all
deserved a pat on the back and a special thanks to Dan for his help. The
whole team and spectators wish Ben a speedy recovery.......... and their
coach Barrie, who has a slipped disc .....NRB

Newsome U13's 54 Hillsborough Hawks U13's 0 ....7th
January 2007
Hawks ready for action with bare 13 players available. A
valiant effort was made by all Hawks players against a squad of 20
opponents ( Newsome ). Hawks welcomed new player Ian Stewart to their
ranks today and didn't he have a splendid game. Tackling superb, all
round effort a credit to himself and team. Big well done Ian on your
first game ( they are not all as today's game, we have some great wins
Ian.)
The conditions were appalling, pitch muddy, strong wind & rain.
Undeterred Hawks once more out-numbered up for the challenge. Newsome
fought to keep Hawks in their own half for most of the first half,
scoring well. Just prior to the end of the first half two Hawks players
were taken from the field of play injured, one unable to return.
Second half and Hawks with 11 came out steaming. Newsome's defence
strong with Hawks narrowly missing out on a well worked team effort,
with Vice Captain Myles Wood being stopped yards short of the line. At
no time did heads drop even when their coach offered to speak with the
referee to stop the game due to lack of players fit to play on. Hawks
refused point blank and gave their most determined effort right up till
the end of play.
First game back after a neck injury ( prior to Christmas ) saw
Ben Mahmood back on true form. Sheer
determination in his running and tackling winning him the '
Man-Of-The-Match' trophy. Well done AGAIN Ben !!!!!!
Some excellent tackling seen by Hawks, PRIDE keeping them going
throughout the most horrid of playing conditions.
A big WELL-DONE to all Sheffield
Hillsborough Hawks Under 13's, they showed true Hawks spirit!
Further well done to Captain Ben Hawksworth & Vice Captain Myles Wood
for showing team spirit and keeping their team together when the going
got tough!

conditions firm. Weather warm & sunny
Sheffield Under 13's travelled to Moldgreen
for a return match having come second to Moldgreen last they played each
other. A much more determined Hawks 'took them on'.First half saw quick
feet, strength and sheer determination from Dan West. West scoring,
having run three quarters of the pitch to do so. Rory Wheatcroft
converting. Soon after James Proctor did the same, dropping down a gear
and motoring away to the delight of his team mates. Wheatcroft
converting. Not to be outdone Moldgreen used the speed and skill of their
number 6 to quickly make all even up to half time.
Team work and astounding passing skills saw
Hawks break through Moldgreen a further 6 times to score, second half
with Dan West a further try; James Proctor a further 3; Nathan Sharpe 1
( fantastic personal effort from Sharpe - outstanding try ); David Brown
one of his trademark tries. No stopping Brown when he's coasting toward
the line. Wheatcroft converting 5 of the second half 6 tries scored ( 7
x 2 points total ).
Parents and spectators we treated to the
very best performance Hawks have played this season. No soft tries,
all well judged, well supported in particular by this weeks
'Man-of-the-match' Josh Plester. Playing winger Plester did his job
and MORE with his support play and tackling. Superb Josh.
FANTASTIC effort from all players, all did
their bit to make this a victory to savour. Always remember lads one
guy puts the ball down between the posts, the team make it possible for
the try scorers to do so.
Stern / strong Captaincy & Vice Captaincy
from Ben Hawksworth (C) & Myles Wood ( VC ). Communication being the
key to both players success along with each and every other player
today.

Conditions: Weather 'fair', ground conditions swamp.
Only two weeks had passed since Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks ventured to
Moldgreen for their game today. Hawks were back again, two players down
on last they played Moldgreen.
TEAM WORK paid of in great style with a touch of sheer determination
being the key to today's endeavours.
Captain Ben Hawksworth decided to play uphill from kick off with the
idea that Hawks opponents may just run out of pace second half when they
had the unenviable task of ploughing uphill. It worked as never before.
Moldgreen with subs in hand came at Hawks strong and hard for the first
10 minutes, play turned in hawks favour when a string of well worked
passes found the ball in the capable hands of Dan West. Dan dropped down
a gear and powered through a well disciplined Moldgreen defence ( well
they were until Dan shot through ), scoring the first of his 'HAT-TRICK'
for his team. Superb run. Rory Wheatcroft converting: 0 - 6.
Soon after Moldgreen not wishing to be outdone saw a gap, took it and
did exactly the same: 6 - 6.
First half saw George Thorpe actively seeking the ball at every play of
the ball, second half, position change and equally equipped Tommy
Laughton taking over to feed good ball also. Great involvement George,
hard tackling !!
Joseph Calverley taking his new set starting position as prop seriously.
If it moved, he had a go. Great effort Joseph!
Dan Smith doing his bit and more wherever he could. Great to see some
big hits going in Dan, well done.
Rory Wheatcroft also nominated for MOTM, as all other lads for his work
today. Good vision, lovely low tackling throughout the game.
Nathan Sharpe although still not 100% fit, did more than his bit with
runs and great tackling. Nice to see you almost fit & back on form again
Nath'.
Heads down momentarily Hawks saw Moldgreen put a further two tries in,
one converted:
HALF TIME SCORE: - 16 - 6
Stern words from Captain Ben Hawksworth & Vice Captain Myles Wood saw
Hawks put their second half plan into action with no score response from
Moldgreen second half ! Ben & Myles had the game of the season.
Tackling, ball carrying and 'discipline control' being their joint
responsibility and forte. Lovely to see such a well captained &
V-Captaincy on the field of play.
Second half with the wind behind them and playing down the steep slope
saw an even more determined Hawks come out refreshed and eager to regain
the lead. Dan West again, superb long run try converted by Rory
Wheatcroft. Then activity started to happen. All Hawks players did as
their new mentor Nick Wood ( V.C Myles Wood big Bro' ) had been
coaching. One high, secure the ball, one low. Once again, it worked.
Hawks did not allow Moldgreen space to breath, defensively the best all
season due to sheer team work. Each and every player did more than their
bit for the benefit of the team, not for personal glory.
On the attack 'full back' Josh Plester took ball in hand from another
well worked string of passes scoring. Quickly and soon after Vice
Captain Myles Wood popped one over the line in flamboyant style, ably
supported by 12 other team mates. That ball was going over their line
come what may. Rory Wheatcroft converting a long angled kick for the
additional two points.
Final moments of the game and once more pass, pass, pass, pass & SCORE,
Dan West completing his hat-trick.
Fierce tackling was seen by both sides. Luke Duckworth, first game ever
played hit anything that wasn't wearing red, black & yellow. Superb
first game, team mates appreciating his efforts.
Man-Of-The-Match award going to Ben
Mahmoud for his all round excellent play, tackling, ball
carrying and making great yards.
Close second Prop forward David Brown. David chosen by his team mates
for the Players Player for today's game, his accolade a two and a half
foot long / high brass lion to take home for the week (The Lion
Award)

Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks U13's (18) 30 Moldgreen
U13's (4) 8 .......[Friendly]...11th
March 2007
Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks played a friendly against
Moldgreen. First time all season Hawks with 17 players. Due to Hawks
numbers, all players assisted the coaching staff by playing out of
position when required, showing just how versatile they all are.
Fantastic effort from all players.
Team work once again the key to an outstanding performance. Very few
missed tackles, spirits high, off they went.George Thorpe with his
determined trademark scurry, diving for the line saw an early lead for
Hawks. Converted Rory Wheatcroft. Lovely work George.
Astounding determination in his tackling saw
Nathan Sharpe hit
everything which moved. One set of six saw Sharpe hit home five tackles
one after the other. No messing with our Mr. Sharpe today. His runs &
efforts unanimously seeing him voted; ' Man-Of-The-Match. '
Fantastic work rate Nathan.
James Proctor not once but twice found a gap in Moldgreens normal tight
defensive line to see two sprints within minutes of each other providing
his team with two lovely tries. Both converted Wheatcroft.Moldgreen not
to be outdone caught Hawks on the hop, saw a gap and their number 6
paved the way for a strong run ending in try scored.Strong runs by all
Hawks props saw great ground made. Special mentions to Kirk Atherton,
Joseph Calverley & David Brown for their efforts. Winger Ian Stewart
tackled great and did all which was required of him.
HALF TIME: 18 - 4
Second half saw an even more determined Hawks come onto the field.Dan
West taking ball in hand powering his way straight through six tackles,
scoring having run almost full length to do so. Great try. Converted
Wheatcroft.
Once more Moldgreen forced their way through giving them the last of
their points for the game.Yet again Proctor took flight, storming
through to score his SECOND HAT TRICK in two weeks. Excellent work.
Wheatcroft converting.
Players player was almost a tie today between Captain
Ben Hawksworth and debutant
Haden Cornish Jenkins.
Captain Ben offered the 'LION AWARD' to Haden in true Captain
style. Due to Hawksworth's efforts throughout the game decision was made
for the trophy to be shared by both players. Excellent first game played

Conditions: Blizzard !
Return game against Farnley, this time seeing a very determined Hawks
'come out to play'. That they did !
Weather conditions were so bad at one point that the referee sent all
players back to the changing room until the weather bated.Hawks got into
their stride immediately seeing James Proctor take ball in hand an
plough through from kick off to score the first try of 5 for Hawks.
Kicker Rory Wheatcroft almost on the side line converted. Superb James,
great kick Rory. Not to be outdone Dan West almost immediately did the
same working from centre today. Excellent try Dan, converted
Wheatcroft.A further 3 try's scored by Proctor put Hawks into a
commanding lead of 28 just prior to half time. Give Farnley their due
they didn't give up and caught Hawks on the hop running in one try
before the break.
HALF TIME SCORE - 28 - 4
The weather deteriorating all the time saw a few slippey balls hit the
deck, no blame laid. Some amazing tackles went in from start to finish
of the game, better support play seen by all, determination and sheer
team work keeping Hawks with the noses in front. Man - Of - The -
Match and ' Player's Player' first time awarded to one player,
Captain Ben Hawksworth. Well timed
tackles, ball handling excellent and carrying ball in hand ensuring he
received both accolades.
Vice Captain Myles Wood's tackling and support play 'Top-Notch', Rory
Wheatcroft carrying, tackling and kicking earning him good mentions from
all spectators. Each and every players to receive 'Coaches Treat' at
training Tuesday for their all round efforts in every aspect of their
play in their game against Farnley. Wingers although a little starved of
ball due to not wishing to risk ball leaving hand ( Ian Stewart - Danny
Smith & Luke Duckworth ) did their utmost with their tackling to bring
Farnley to a halt when ball carrier came their way.Dan West playing out
of position as centre again ably supported by Haden Cornish Jenkins did
their joint bit, again superb tackling by both players.
George Thorpe and Tommy Laughton exchanged positions more that four
times with each other, both hitting hard and supporting at every play of
the ball. Great work you two ! Joseph Calverley took matters into his
own hand on more than three occasions hitting hard and using his
strength as did Jonny Hatfield, substitute prop / second rower & David
Brown as prop.
Farnley, far from beaten twice more took ball to wing adding their last
points. No conversions from Farnley. Josh Plester doing his utmost to
stop their winger with a lovely tackle, lack of support on this occasion
seeing Josh's efforts go to waste. Ben Mahmoud once more taking ball
forward every time it came his way, linking up with whoever was in
support and taking hard tackles when required. Great effort Ben M!
Lovely hard hits also. To finish off Proctor once more taking on the
opposition, in & out, forward, sideways and evading as he does running
in a great final try for Hawks ( 5 in total for Proctor ), Wheatcroft
converting.
