Under 11s  - Reports

Hawks played their last match of the season away at Littleborough and continued their impressive form with a resounding win over a strong, physical Littleborough side.

The first half began with Hawks scoring through a well worked individual try from captain Cory Aston which he also converted. Hawks strong defence was a major factor in keeping Littleborough to just one converted try in the first half. Greg Burns was the second on the score sheet when he broke through several tackles to squeeze through in the corner, the next on the score sheet was Matthew Bloomer with a tremendous three quarter length of the pitch run. These were both converted by Jack Mitchell and Carl Thomas giving a half time score of 18-6.

Greg Burns scored again in the second half from a scrum, closely followed by another great individual try from Cory Aston. Littleborough replied with two more converted tries during this half. Hawks never stopped attacking and were rewarded with four more tries. Two from Jack mitchell, another from Matthew Bloomer and a fine first try of the season from Daniel Bell. Three of the second half tries were converted by Craig Chapman, Daniel Bell and Matthew Bloomer giving the final score of 48-18.

A superb performance to round of another excellent season.

Greg Burns awarded man of the match for his strong performance in attack and defence.

Coach/Manager's comment: Can't wait for the start of U12 league rugby in September !

Hoyland Vikings U11s (0) 12  Hillsborough Hawks U11's (22) 38 - ...23rd April 2006

Hawks U11's travelled to Hoyland for this local derby and continued their impressive 2006 winning run with a convincing victory over a strong side. The Hawks soon got in to the game with a try from Matt Bloomer converted by captain Cory Aston. The pressure continued with strong runs in attack leading to a first half hat trick for Cory Aston, two of these were converted by Jack Mitchell and Carl Thomas. Hoyland could not get over the line due to excellent defensive team work from the Hawks giving a half time score of 22-0.

Good teamwork led to an early try in the second half from Craig Chapman which he also successfully converted. the result was never in doubt but Hoyland continued to attack and were rewarded with two tries in the last 15 minutes of the match. Hawks also scored a further two tries and one conversion; try scorers Jack Mitchell and Morgan Brindley conversion from Danny Lee.

A superb result against a hard working physical Hoyland side. Man of the match awarded to Luke Turner for his solid defensive work and overall involvement. A special mention for Carl Thomas who tackled players three times his size on several occasions.

Well done ! The best team performance of 2006.

Hawks travelled to Slaithwaite and were met with a barely playable waterlogged pitch and only 8 Slaithwaite players resulting in an 8 a side game and 5 Hawks subs. The U11's played good rugby throughout and remained positive despite poor conditions and dubious refereeing decisions. First half tries came from Greg Burns, Morgan Brindley and Jack Mitchell with conversions from Cory Aston, Jack Mitchell and Matt Bloomer. strong defensive work resulted in a half time score of 18-0.Excellent team work continued in the second half as the strength of players on the bench played a major part. Further tries came from captain Cory Aston and Jack Mitchell both successfully converted by Craig Chapman and Tom Hague. Slaithwaite replying with a consolation converted try.

Good rugby skills shown by all 13 players. Man of the match awarded to Daniel Bell who is growing in confidence with every game.

Hillsborough Hawks U11's (26) 50 - Slaithwaite Saracens (10) 14

The U11's returned to winning ways with a solid attacking and defensive performance against Slaithwaite. Slaithwaite travelled with only 9 players so Hawks had to drop to the same leaving 6 subs keen to get involved.

The first half saw some great ball handling skills from the U11's. Positive attacking play and great passing lead to five tries and three successful conversions in the first half. Try scorers were Greg Burns, Matthew Bloomer (2), Jack mitchell and Sam Ashworth. Conversions from Cory Aston, Mitchell and Ashworth. Half time score was 26-10 to the Hawks.

Excellent team work continued in the second half leading to five further tries and two conversions. Try scorers this half Mitchell(2), Morgan Brindley and captain Cory Aston(2). Conversions from Carl Thomas and Burns. Final score 50-14.

Man of the match awarded to Jack Mitchell for his first ever hat trick of tries alongside his ever impressive defence. A marvellous team performance both in attack and defence from all 15 players. Let's see more of the same next week as we meet Guisley for the first time.

Hillsborough Hawks U11's 16 - West Bowling 20 ...29th January

Hawks faced West Bowling for the first time this season and found themselves on the receiving end of an early converted try. Hawks soon replied with a try from Morgan Brindley giving a half time score of 6 - 4 to West Bowling.

The second half started with below-par defence leading to a West Bowling try and conversion, again Hawks replied with a try from quick thinking acting half back Jack Mitchell which he also converted. West Bowling continued to attack and were rewarded with another try. Hawks did not allow their heads to drop and again replied with a try from captain and Man of the match Cory Aston, converted by Craig Chapman giving a score of 16 all with 5 minutes to play. A draw would have been a fair result but unfortunately bad handling from the Hawks allowed a final try from West Bowling. Final score 16-20.

Some good individual tackling from Aston, Mitchell and Carl Thomas. At home again next week against Slaithwaite when the under 11's will aim to return to winning ways.

Hillsborough Hawks U11's   20 - Elland U11's  12 ....22nd January 2006

The U11's started the game confidently and always looked in control against a strong Elland side.

First on the score sheet was captain Cory Aston who touched down after running the full length of the pitch. Elland soon replied with a converted try but Hawks fought back and Greg Burns scored a well worked try successfully converted by Jack Mitchell. A further converted try from Elland just before the break led to Hawks going into half time 12-10 down.

The half time team talk obviously worked as the Hawks came back out determined to win and tackled tenaciously throughout the remainder of the match. Excellent passing skills and strong forward play were also evident. Jack Mitchell scored the third try from dummy-half successfully converted by Man of the match Matthew Bloomer who also scored the final try of the game. Strong defence resulted in no score from Elland during this half.

Wyke 6 - Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks 40....8th January 2006

Action from the Wyke game

Hawks U11's travelled away to Wyke for the first game of 2006. Hawks started strongly keeping Wyke in their own half, as soon as they got the ball Hawks scored with a well worked try from Matthew Bloomer, converted by Cory Aston.
Hawks continued to dominate the first half with excellent ball handling skills and further tries followed from Morgan Brindley, Aston and another from Bloomer one converted by Craig Chapman, giving a half time score of 20-0 which was a fair reflection of the Hawks dominance.

In the second half great things were expected from the U11's and they didn't disappoint. More excellent rugby skills were displayed in the best performance this season. Strong running and great passing resulted in 4 further tries from Brindley, Aston(2) and Greg Burns, two successfully converted by Sam Ashworth and Jake Johnson.

A fantastic team performance, special mentions to Man of the Match - Morgan Brindley who took his tries well and played a part in several others. Also Cory Aston, Jack Mitchell and Greg Burns who were all involved in the important moves resulting in the final score 40-6.

Well done to all involved.

Hillsborough Hawks U11's (6) 12 - Wibsey Juniors U11s (6) 28.............4th December 2005

Referee spoils the game with timekeeping problems

The U11's travelled to Wibsey with a depleted side due to injury and illness but showed spirit and determination in a strong first half. Jack Mitchell scored a good try early in the match successfully converted by Cory Aston. Hawks defended well keeping the score-line to 6 all at half time. Unfortunately the referee played only 16 minutes this half when Hawks were playing down hill but 25 minutes when Wibsey had the advantage.

In the second half Wibsey scored 4 further tries despite some good tackling from Hawks. There was also some good attacking play but the Hawks just couldn't get over the line. A spirited performance despite poor conditions and some controversial refereeing decisions. Much improved play from all, man of the match awarded to Luke Turner for overall involvement in the game.

Ovenden U11s 28 Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks U11s 6.....13th November

The U11's had an unusually quiet game today. Ovenden were strong when defending and thwarted Hawks attacking play. The only points for the Hawks came from a well worked try and conversion from captain Cory Aston. They struggled to make ground and luck just wasn't on their side today. Man of the match Danny Lee made some strong runs and displayed improved involvement throughout the game. Hawk's U11's were not up to their usual standard this week. We look forward to significant improvement from all players next week - we know you can do it

Hillsborough Hawks U11's 28 - King Cross U11's 38 .....30th October

A real treat again for all spectators as two very evenly matched teams gave 100% effort in a game played with good sportsmanship and determination from all.

Hawks started the game with some fine defensive work and soon gained possession resulting in a fine individual try from captain Cory Aston also converted by Aston. King Cross were the next to score despite strong defence but Hawks always looked dangerous in attack and Aston soon broke through again to score a further try converted by Jack Mitchell. King Cross scored again giving a half time score of 12 all.

The second half promised to provide lots more entertainment and the U11's didn't disappoint. King Cross were forced into making an error by the Hawks defence, man of the match Daniel Bell picked up a loose ball and ran 60 metres. This move resulted in a try for Greg Burns converted by Craig Chapman. Further tries followed from Matthew Bloomer and Aston completing his hat trick. One successfully converted by Bloomer. Unfortunately a couple of costly mistakes late in the game resulted in King Cross scoring five tries this half to the Hawks three.

Morgan Brindley, Burns and Aston were outstanding in defence today and also made good ground in attack. Once again a fine team performance where the scoreline didn't go in our favour. Well done Hawks, we are seeing an improvement every week.

Hillsborough Hawks U11's 22 - Meltham Blacks U11s 24 ....23rd October

Aston continues in his father's footsteps!

This was the first defeat of the season for the U11's in a very close game. The whole squad gave 100% effort and were unfortunate to come away the losing side. The game started positively with strong attack and defence from the Hawks. An entertaining first 10 minutes resulted in no score as the 2 teams were so closely matched. Hawks were the first on the score sheet with a well worked try from captain Cory Aston, also converted by Aston. Meltham replied with 2 tries and conversions before Hawks battled back with a try from Greg Burns resulting from precise passing. Meltham scored one more giving a half time score of 18-10.

A strong first five minutes from the Hawks led to a try from Jack Mitchell, converted by Craig Chapman. With this the Hawks were back in contention and the game could have gone either way. Meltham scored next and a late try from Aston converted by Tom Hague was not enough to win the game. A fantastic performance led to praise from spectators on both sides. Cory Aston was awarded man of the match for his point scoring and relentless attack and defence.

Hillsborough Hawks U11's 34 - Huddersfield Sharks 12 - 9th October

Three wins out of three for the U11's as they continue to impress with their ever improving defensive and attacking skills. Hawks made a strong start with some good running rugby. Captain Cory Aston was the first on the score sheet with a try and a conversion early in the first half. Hawks were made to defend stoutly against impressive opposition but further strong attacking runs from the Hawks led to a well worked try from Matthew Bloomer, converted by Jack Mitchell. Giving a half time score of 12-0.

Greg Burns was soon on the score sheet in the second half after a precise kick from captain Aston, successful conversion from Carl Thomas. Hawks started to dominate with strong runs from Bloomer, Craig Chapman and man of the match Ashford Mayne. A second half hat trick from Aston and further conversions from Chapman and Tom Hague gave a scoreline worthy of this performance from the U11's. Excellent defensive work from Mitchell and Aston kept Huddersfield to just 12 points.

A fantastic team performance from the squad of 17. Well Done !

Ovenden Festival! (18th September )

Nothing much to report. Another badly organised festival of rugby. We only played 30 minutes of rugby. We had to be there to register for 10.00 yet no-one could tell us what was happening until 10.50. Our group had only 4 teams so 3 games each. Some other groups had 6 teams.  5 minutes each way so the whistle was blown before any one had a chance to get in to the game. We drew the first, won the second and lost the third. Each player was given a certificate and then we made the long journey back home.

Hillsborough Hawks U11's 22  Ovenden 12 (11th September)

Hillsborough Hawks U11's made a flying start to the new season with an impressive win over a strong Ovenden side.

The first half started positively with strong defence forcing Ovenden to make handling errors. Hawks soon got on the score sheet with a try from Matthew Bloomer, successfully converted by captain Cory Aston. More strong attacking play led to another try from Aston, converted by man of the match Jack Mitchell. A further try before half time was the result of a great kick from Aston which Greg Burns chased and sucessfully touched down. Conversion came from Craig Chapman giving a half time score of 18-0.

The second half proved to be a close encounter with both sides attacking and defending solidly. Hawks capitalised on another great kick from Aston and Burns was once again successful in chasing the ball to score the try. Ovenden kept working and were rewarded with two well worked tries and conversions towards the end of the match.

An excellent performance to start the season. Special mentions to Morgan Brindley on his debut - some great tackles, Ashford Mayne - strong running and involvement, Craig Chapman - excellent work rate and Jack Mitchell who was awarded man of the match for his fearless tackles and hard work in attack.
