Wheatcroft : Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks Under 12's Coach
Whose turn to wash the kit ? ...The one not smiling or muddy !!
Under 12s - Reports Keighley Cougars 36 - Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks 12. - 11th September Hawks started their game with four new players to the squad, non having played a competitive game before today. Jake Naylor, Josh Plester, Danny Smith & Rowan Greetham. Exceptional first game from all four lads, very well done. Cougars opened their score sheet in great style, putting Hawks under pressure from the off, lack of cohesion and NOT moving up when defending being Hawks downfall throughout the game. Great play & spirit was shown by the Hawks, especially when coming up against the most fierce yet noble tackling the Hawks had ever experienced. Big well done to Keighley Cougars! Josh Plester, Danny Smith, Rowan Greetham & Jake Naylor the new Hawks players all on debut performance gave their all. All made ground when receiving the ball, all tackled superbly. Well done. Second half saw David Brown ( Man-Of-The-Match ) score a lovely determined try which lifted the team spirit, converted by Rory Wheatcroft. David Brown put great effort in to all his play today, his strength & fitness showing through. Not long after Nathan ( Red ) Sharpe saw his gap and nothing was ever going to stop him placing the ball over the try line. Conversion by Captain Ben. Fantastic try Nathan! Special mentions for Captain Ben, Vice Captain Myles Wood, Danny Smith , David Ashby, Tom Atkinson, Alex Mitchell ( what a tackle ), Josh Plester, Alistair Bell, Rowan Greetham, Rory Wheatcroft & Jake Naylor for their efforts when tackling & all round good play. The Hawks although disappointed with their defeat left the field of play to applause from the opposition coach, manager and parents of the Cougars. Great to see, all with their heads up. Bit of work to do in training Tuesday in preparation for our home game against Royds next Sunday. Big well done to all the players on a valiant effort against a team which tackled exceptionally and moved up when in defence and attack. Report : Barrie Wheatcroft Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks 56 Royds 0 :- 18th September An astounding all round performance from each and every Hawks player was seen against Royds today only the second game of the season. Team coach ably assisted by today's 'Assistant Coach' Mr. Daniel Hawksworth, ( Thanks Dan ) and David Butler ( Water & 'T' carrier ) who was rather busy. Hawks got off to a flying start straight from their kick off, putting Royds under pressure each and every play of the ball thereafter. Tom Atkinson stormed through in determined style to score Hawks first try of the match. Followed shortly after with another splendid try for his team, converting that try as well. Captain Ben Hawksworth in the true spirit of the game drew the opposition toward him to then off load to Danny Smith for another try. Great feeling eh Danny, (his first try for the Hawks.) Royds were in disarray, they bunched up, fumbled and due to unbelievable sustained pressure from David Brown, acting as marker whenever he could, Royds game fell to pieces. David took the defence on and scored with flair. Not taking anything away from Royds, they played to the best of their ability, Hawks played with superior style and determination. Hawks saw Alex Mitchell take his new position as acting dummy half seriously. Quick hands, no fumbles and his tackling took your breath away. Bearing in mind that Alex was the smallest Hawks player on the field of play, small player, heart of a lion. Fantastic all round effort Alex. Rory Wheatcroft assisted further in making the score-line what it w as, scoring to well thought through tries. Hawks saw their right hand side kicker ( Rory Wheatcroft - left foot kicker ) convert 5 tries today, including two after his own tries. Well done Rory and superb tackling in his new found position as full back. Nathan Sharpe took flight four times, each and every time Nathan took hold of the ball there was no stopping him. He even looked to off-load at the last minute of his last run in the hope that he could allow another team mate to score for the Hawks, sportsmanship at its best as also shown by Captain Ben. Unfortunately no one could keep up so four tries from Nathan today along with his best tackling game for quite some time. The other new players to the team gave their all, Jake Naylor, Rowan Greetham & Josh Plester. Josh coming away with the award of 'Man-of-the-Match' for his sheer determination in all aspects of the game. Great tackling and superb runs seen from Josh. Vice Captain Myles Wood started the first half like a man possessed, his tackle rate the best for two season, his runs with the ball culminating in a fine try for the Hawks. Brilliant play Myles, keep it up for a full game and you will be taking the prestigious trophy home with you very soon. A final score line of 56 - 0 was a very good reflection on a vastly improved Hawks. Alistair Bell & David Ashby continued with their work as strong forwards, making each and every tackle count. Superb performance from Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks Under 12's. Report : Barrie Wheatcroft SHEFFIELD HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS 0 SIDDAL 64 - 25th September Siddal took the kick off at the start of the game and quickly took command. Hawks found themselves in disarray at every play of the ball in both attack & defence, hardly ever taking the ball into play from kick off. The ball just didn't go Hawks way today. Some good individual play was seen, very little team work. Captain Ben Hawksworth saw the surgeons work undone when he tackled one of Siddals strongest players, Ben coming off second best with an eye watering 'snot-squirter' bang on his recently reconstructed nose. He took ten minutes and came back on to attempt to see his team perform as they had done last Sunday. Rory Wheatcroft also suffered a leg injury and was sidelined for a good 15 minutes. In true Hawks style, Rory did the same as his Captain and came back on to see out the rest of the game. A lack committed tackling saw Hawks overawed by a very disciplined and capable Siddal team. Very few players moved up either when in attack or defence due to constant pressure from the opposition. Hawks made more sideways ground than they ever have, very few strong runs, once again, very little support play was seen. Here's hoping that lessons will have been learned from their experience of today in time for their home game against Huddersfield next Sunday. Hawks had a bad day, let us pick up the bits and get back to winning form!! Report : Barrie Wheatcroft SHEFFIELD HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS 26 HUDDERSFIELD SHARKS 22 - 2nd October As a parent was treated to a team playing without their coach to a game of 13 players doing what their best at rugby, Match report will follow but in the mean time. Sheffield took the lead and apart from a few mistakes stayed the leaders, 2 tries from Nathan Sharpe ( man of the match ) 2 tries from Ben Hawksworth plus 1 conversion. 2 tries from David Brown. Special mentions for Miles Wood Vice Captain Great runs keep those feet going and keep the one two going it made a difference. Special mention to Thomas Atkinson it's not always easy to kick mate but you with your strength and your ability will get there. The whole team deserves a man of the match you did what a coach would except and look to your captain and for most you played as a team. Well done. Thank you all for a good match to watch , Boy's you deserved the win . Julie Hawksworth Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks U12s 6 Wibsey U12s 40 ...9th October From kick off, Hawks were under pressure by forward moving Wibsey. Soon into play and Hawks were complaining of intimidating tactics from their opposition. Words do not hurt Hawks. Each & every time Wibsey took hold of the ball, they stormed through an ill disciplined Hawks defence line, severe lack of tackling from Hawks until the last ten minutes of the game. Hawks saw some individual good play, culminating in ground being made, but only in the second half. The only piece of superb team play seen today was when they passed the ball safely and a very determined ‘ joint man-of-the match’ winner, James Proctor was insistent that his team mates would not suffer another ‘ nilling. ’ James converted his try putting Hawks on the score board with six well worked points. Great determination from James Proctor. Some great tackling was seen from Hawks Captain Ben Hawksworth. His Vice Captain & ‘joint man-of-the-match’ winner Myles Wood gave his all for his team today. He took hold of the ball at every possible opportunity and made good ground for Hawks each and every time he was in possession of the ball. Brilliant performance Myles! Rory Wheatcroft took a drop out kick when one of the Hawks players was caught & tackled over his line. Rory drop-kicked out, and up the field of play seeing his efforts rewarded by the ball going into touch and then regained by Hawks. Hawks still remain standing each time they were in defence, no effort being made to put the opposition under pressure by moving up, in line when in defence. That and overall poor tackling being Hawks downfall once again today. Hawks lost 6 – 40 against a very well disciplined team who incidentally have played together as a team for some five years or more. Report Barrie Wheatcroft. Ovenden (28) 38 Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks (0) 16 .................30th October
Poor tackling if any, once again Hawks downfall. Surprising to say the least when Jack Howieson of Sheffield Eagles gave his time last Tuesday's training session to assist in showing how tackling should be done. Second half started much the same with Ovenden walking through Hawks defence to score again. Finally, thank heavens, Hawks got into their stride seeing three tries scored, two from James Proctor and what was described as a joint try by Captain Ben Hawksworth & Alistair Bell. Captain Ben allowing the try to his team mate Alistair for the score sheet sake. Very noble Ben, well done and good captaincy. Superb second half tackling was seen by Josh Plester, Danny Smith & a set of three consecutive tackles from Rory Wheatcroft. Danny Smith worked well throughout the game tackling and running the ball whenever he had hold of it. His efforts earned him the well deserved ' Man-of-the-Match' award. Danny suffered a hard hand off to the throat moment before final whistle was blown. Well done Danny great work. Vice Captain Myles Wood got stuck in as always and took the ball from as many 'play the ball' as he possibly could seeing good ground being made. Captain Ben still nursing a back injury from last weeks game still found the courage to take on one & all. Great team effort lads. When matters were looking grim, James Proctor took matters into his own hands to work his way through a strong defensive line twice, scoring two fabulous tries. His second half tackling was the best seen for quite some time, one in particular seeing him lift the largest player on the field upwards and heavily backwards. That was the point that Hawks lifted their heads and got stuck in as we know then can. Three restart kicks ( after tries scored ) from Rory Wheatcroft saw Hawks retain the ball from their kick off culminating in two of the three tries for Hawks coming immediately. Rory converted two of his three kicks bringing the final score line to 38 - 16.
Disappointing start to the game, last quarter, they played
out of their skins, thanks to James Proctor giving the team
their pride back. Report Barrie Wheatcroft.
ROYDS U12s
0 SHEFFIELD HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS U12s 22 ...6th
November 2005
Mud ...... What mud? Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks played their return match against Royds, away from home. Both teams were 'up for it', conditions akin to a quagmire!! Hawks defence today shown at their best, lads working together and covering all options. Captain Ben Hawksworth appointing David Brown as Vice Captain for today's game. Royds won the toss and kicked toward the Hawks. No knock on and off into action. Hawks took a little time getting into their stride seeing them have a six point lead to nil at half time. Second half and straight into their game, more cohesion, more team play good movement of the ball around the field of play. Give Royds their due, they were a vastly improved team from when Hawks took them on at home winning 56 - 0. Efforts from both Danny Smith & Josh Pleaster on either side of each other, on wing, were thwarted only by splendid defence from an under pressure Royds. Just like you see the GB team do when they're not robbed of what rightfully should be theirs ( That tri cup thingy ). BW Said as a true Yorkshireman with less knowledge of rugby Union as I have of league. Willing to learn though! 'Man-of-the-Match' winner today, Kirk Atherton, used his strength to plough through Royds defence twice, one culminating in a well deserved try scored. In only his second game for his team Kirk showed true team spirit by looking to off-load whilst having no fear that his opponents would get the upper hand. Fantastic game Kirk, keep up the great work. 'Extras' ( 2 points ) courtesy of Rory Wheatcroft. Nathan Sharpe, as ever in the thick of the action. Great runs, good well meant tackles & consistent now Nathan, just like you do in training, great to see, great work rate Nathan, keep it up. Not first, not second but third attempt saw today's Vice captain David Brown storm over the line to add another well deserved four points for his team. Extras - Rory Wheatcroft. Good team play, culminating in Rory Wheatcroft scoring a 'well - shared' try. Good dummy pass to Josh, it was so good that Josh also dived over the line as he thought he had taken the ball from Rory. Great team effort on this particular try. Extras, - Rory Wheatcroft. Hawks saw Tom Atkinson 'back in good from' seeing Tom score a great try but also saw Tom doing some of his famed 'steam engine' runs at each & every opportunity. Great game Tom, keep going forward mate as you did today. Once more, special mention to Alex Mitchell for his unbelievable tackling throughout both halves of the game. Astounding bravery from Hawk's, shall we say, " not quite the tallest in the team" but definitely the one with the heart of a lion!! Superb Alex!
Final score line; Royds 0 -
Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks 22. That tells us either Royds
have improved approximately 50% since last we played them
when we set a score line of Hawks 56 - Royds nil or perhaps
we should have seen a little more effort from Hawks !!
Superb effort lads, a little bit more please when we play
Wyke this coming Sunday. Match Photos: Barrie Wheatcroft and Julie Hawksworth

Report Barrie Wheatcroft. SHEFFIELD HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS U12s (20) 30 MELTHAM ALL BLACKS U12s (0) 12 .....13th November
Hawks saw a squad of 16 players
vying for a position to start play, all eager to show
Meltham how much they have improved from last they played
them. A hard game was fought from kick-off. Good defensive
play was seen by Meltham, once again Hawks dodging their
responsibility when tackling, on the whole. We are a team
Hawks & cannot rely on a few of our players tackling, all
must do their bit. Still slow moving up in defence Hawks!
Captain Ben Hawksworth took command of his team, delegating
responsibility for the 'forwards' to his Vice Captain Myles
Wood. Some quick play of the ball seeing acting dummy half's
taking runs wherever possible. Quick play saw Hawks with a
convincing 20 nil lead at half time, much to the displeasure
of Meltham's coaching staff.

Captain Ben Hawksworth &
Vice-Captain Myles Wood took hold of their team mates and
had a quiet whisper. The result was breathtaking. Captain
Ben once again seen to be the best tackler on the field of
play. Superb effort Ben, incredible tackling. Two more tries

for ( 8 points ).

TOP TACKLER: CAPTAIN BEN HAWKSWORTH
Ben not only tackles well,
sorry, incredibly well but his 'team play' today was
astounding. Ben & Rory Wheatcroft worked together
taking a ball out wide with Rory carrying, Ben on his
outside, Rory drew his man and passed to Ben. Rory made
an overlap for Ben, Ben drew his man and passed back to
Rory to score such a lovely 'team try'. Incredible work
you two! Each and every player made their tackles count
today, no flailing arms, all good and proper tackling
seen by all. What an improvement. It doesn't stop
there. Each and every player gave everything to their
game, the few early mistakes quickly rectified as the
game progressed. Fair play was seen at all times by
both teams, a credit to the game of rugby league! Hawks
saw James Proctor in the thick of it, his tackling
second to non. His foresight in seeing space and taking
the gap saw three tries from James, two tries seeing him
having to evade four, five then six defenders to go
almost three quarters of the length of the pitch to
score. James read the game well late in the second half
seeing him kick full width of the field of play into the
arms of fellow team mate and 'winger' Danny Smith for
Danny to score a try. Not only for the three tries
scored by James but his effort, determination, tackling
and all round work today saw James pick up the coveted
MAN OF THE MATCH AWARDED
TO JAMES PROCTOR
Vice Captain Myles Wood,
following on from last weeks three tries saw Myles again
put in the effort and score two lovely well timed &
thought through tries. Well done Myles, great
work.Nathan Sharpe working with fellow team mates dodged
and squirmed his way through Moldgreen's defence to
score a brilliant try. Superb first in tackling again
seen from Nathan, great support play when required
also. Lovely stuff Nathan! Good ground made from David
Brown, looking to offload at every opportunity.
Coach's, Manager & parents

Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks travelled to
Meltham for their game today. Conditions good and Hawks not
having played a game for over five weeks meant effort & team
work would be the key today. They did not disappoint. Each &
every player was fighting for starting position, all eager
to show they hadn't lost their touch. Report Barrie Wheatcroft. SHEFFIELD HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS 0 WIBSEY 56.....29th January 2006 Conditions good, bright & pitch in good condition: Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks starting with a depleted squad due to illness & injury. No subs with an expected hard game to come.Wibsey took command in the first moments of the game and never looked back. Some individual good play was seen, very little team work or cohesion displayed by Hawks under 12's today. Silly handling errors from restart kick-off and lack of effective tackling saw Wibsey run straight through Hawks near non-existent defence in the first half, many times. Once heads were down they didn't come back up again. Defensive line did not move up when required, even when repeatedly asked by coaching staff. In attack Wibsey were all over Hawks not allowing any fluid movement of the ball. Hawks saw Josh Plester ( Full back ) leave the field of play after a crunching tackle, not to come back on. Alistair Bell also left the play, not to return once his fingers were pushed back further than the body would allow. Hawks down to 11 men for most of the second half. Man of the Match David Brown did some splendid work from marker and from scrum, breaking and tackling the ball carrier before he knew what day it was. Great work David and good effort in your game today. Hawks were beaten by a well disciplined team who tackled ( three into a tackle every time ) to the tune of 0 - 56. Chins up Hawks, listen to your coaches and put into practice what you all do so well in training. Here's to a good game this coming Sunday. WELL DONE HAWKS ON A GREAT GAME. Report Barrie Wheatcroft. MOLDGREEN 6 SHEFFIELD HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS 32.....12 February 2006
BIG WELL DONE HAWKS !! Report Barrie Wheatcroft. MELTHAM ALL BACKS (0) 0 SHEFFIELD HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS (0) 6 .....19th February 2006 Pitch conditions: Abysmal; melting ice leaving a quagmire in its wake. Heavy going, pitch tilt left to right full length of pitch. Second away game to Meltham on the trot, both teams up for their game. Hawks defended the best they have done all season. Superb first in low tackles coming in from Dan Smith / Josh Plester ( wings ), James Proctor, Captain Ben Hawksworth, Myles Wood, Rory Wheatcroft, Joseph Calverely, Ryan Marritt. Tom Atkinson & Jake Naylor. David Brown working well from scum, bringing down the scrum half twice. Nathan Sharpe defended as though his life depended on it with two try stopping tackles, both almost on Hawks try line. Kirk Atherton doing the very same taking the ball carrier back a good six meters when confronted by a very determined Meltham forward, in the last few minutes of play. Hawks saw a bad decision from the 'home coach' referee giving the ball back to Meltham when James Proctor took the ball from a Meltham knock on and skedaddled his way almost to the opposition try line prior to being brought back by the ref. ( The ref later apologised whilst play was still going saying one of his lads admitted a knock on which would have seen James Proctor score )! Undeterred, James Proctor took ball in hand and ran through Meltham's defence in the second half to place the ball directly between the sticks ( 4 points ). Rory Wheatcroft converted ( two points ). Final score Meltham 0 Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks 6 Man of the match award going to Joseph Calverley for his great, ever-improving tackling and his ongoing improvement in every aspect of the game. Joseph was tackling, passing, off-loading and looking for support play from his team mates at all times. Great effort Joseph, keep up the splendid work. A very evenly matched game seeing a nil - nil score line up to half time. Hawks still determined not to move up when in defence being their major downfall along with lack of passing today. They played against 8 regular Meltham All Blacks players, two under 11's, one a young lady. If we wish to win with honour Hawks you need to put in more effort, work on your fitness, move up as a unit when in defence and each and everyone must work as a team member without relying on the same players each week to do all the work! Lack of support for our ball carrier when we had the ball saw ten missed opportunities. We fielded 13 against their 10 and only just won. Fitness lads is your responsibility, please take the matter more seriously. Report Barrie Wheatcroft. Keighley Cougars 32 Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks 0......... 29th February 2006Conditions damp but bright. Hawks travelled for their away fixture to play Keighley Cougars. Not the best game from Hawks this season, far from it unfortunately. They simply didn't gel. Keighley were strong in defence and quick moving up when Hawks were attacking. Some individual great efforts were seen, very little teamwork shown in their game. Kirk Atherton took the ball at every opportunity, gaining ground whenever he could. His efforts seeing him awarded 'The Man-of-the-Match' trophy for his continued improvement and determination. Hawks lost 32 - 0. More team effort required, and tackling needs to be effective at all times. If Hawks do not move up when in defence the opposition gain speed and make it more difficult to effect strong tackles. A message to Alistair Bell. Hope you are feeling better Alistair. Your team mates, Kevin, Simon Di & me send our regards and look forward to you back at training once your fingers have fully healed. Best wishes Alistair from all!! Report Barrie Wheatcroft. Moldgreen U12s (4) 4 Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks U12s (0) 6.......19th March 2006 Hawks again travelled away to play Moldgreen. Conditions overcast, pitch muddy & heavy going with a mountainous slope to contend with. Moldgreen able to field a full team with three subs. A vastly improved team albeit most players lacking skill made up for it with dirty play. Moldgreen caught Hawks on the hop early in the first half seeing them put four points on their score sheet. Hawks up'd their defensive play and got stuck in. Debut performances by two new players, Ben Mahmoud and George Thorpe. They were welcomed in fine style by their Hawks team mates and great to see seasoned players, Captain & Vice Captain sharing their expertise with the new lads. Josh Plester took ball in hand, running uphill, almost the full length of the pitch, tackled just short of Moldgreen's line. Superb run Josh! A hard game was on the cards and Hawks rose to the challenge. Hawks defended the best they have all season and forced quite some errors from their opponents.
Second half Hawks were playing down the steep
incline and made some fantastic runs seeing Ryan Marritt
score, only to have it disallowed due to the referee
listening to Molgreen's coach saying Ryan ran into touch.
Great effort Ryan, lovely to see that you are back on true
form with some brilliant tackling today. Keep up the good
work.
One to watch for the future, great game Ben,
especially so as it was your first ever game. George Thorpe
coming a close second due to his work rate and game
awareness. Lovely to see the two newest lads fitting in so
well. Thanks Hawks for making them so welcome.

Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks 38 Keighley 6 ...30th April 2006 All photos of the Keighley Match © Mark Ashby 2006 Conditions: Sunny, dry pitch, warm. Hawks have been looking forward to their return fixture against Keighley Cougars. Last Hawks played the Cougars away, they lost 32 - 0. Big turn around today seeing ALL HAWKS players giving their all.
HAWKS took the kick off and saw 'MAN OF THE MATCH' winner James Proctor chase the kick, take the ball in hand and score within the first 10 seconds of play. Next play from HAWKS kick off again saw James replicate his earlier try with the same ease. Absolutely superb game awareness. Well done James.Keighley were obviously rattled and tried their utmost to get back into the game. They took the ball wide and ran in their only try of the game, also ably converted. Score a comfortable 10 - 6 with HAWKS holding more in store. Last weeks man of the match winner Dan West was up for the challenge. He took ball in hand from a good pass and stormed through to put his name on the score card. Excellent team work, excellent individual flair Dan.
Nathan Sharpe, as always ready to take on the challenge did his team mates proud by forcing his way through a shocked Cougars defence to also score for his team. Lovely try Nath, keep at it. Cougars found themselves defending their line once more seeing Ben Mahmout trying to get across their line. One of Cougars players fell back awkwardly and injured his wrist badly. He was taken to hospital immediately. Hawks players send their very best wishes to the player in question. Second half saw a flurry of tries from HAWKS. James Proctor adding another two tries, Dan West adding a further two tries to his tally, James Proctor doing the same with two more well worked tries. All tries scored proves that TEAM WORK is the way forward. The individual efforts of the tries scorers should not go un-noticed however as all, including the scorers today did their utmost to show the Cougars what they can do when required. Pride shone through from the Hawks and the won their game 38 - 6. Rory Wheatcroft converted three, adding the extra 6, and showed great determination when he took on four Cougars players, almost scoring. Myles Wood ( Vice - Captain ) showed his usual style. Heavens only knows how he didn't get one over the line today.
Captain Ban Hawksworth captained his team well as always. His commands were listened to and it showed in the teams performance. George Thorpe, Ben Mahmout & Kirk Atherton took ball in hand at every opportunity making great ground. All three made ALL their tackles count. Superb effort keep it up. Due to the speed of the play the ball, matters were taken in hand by the try scorers, again not taking anything away from the support from team mates. David Brown & David Ashby took their responsibilities seriously and assisted wherever the could. Great stuff lads. Ryan Marritt also made great ground and tackled extremely well today. Wingers were a little starved of ball but both Dan Smith & Josh Plester got stuck in with their tackles as did Alistair Bell. Lovely stuff.
Well HAWKS, you did what you set out to do and restored your pride. Your Manager Di, Simon & me, along with all the parents & spectators thank you for all your hard work and for putting on the splendid display which you did
VERY WELL
