Late News: 22 April 2006:  An unfortunate accident whilst playing BASKETBALL has robbed us of Liam Hamre for the rest of the season with a broken wrist (and concussion). Liam has been a superb asset at loose forward or full back for the past 18 months and will be missed in our last couple of games.

 Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks U14’s (30) 58, Queens Knights U14’s (0) 4.....15th January 2006

Hawks "Target" another West Yorkshire Scalp

Hawks were back in league action with another emphatic win over a full strength Queens Knights team. From the very first minute Hawks took control as a big drives from the two props, Daniel Wilson and Josh Barton, created the space for Adam Brook to release Corey Hanson who ran-in under the sticks. Dale Mulligan soon followed-up the opening score with a powerful run off the back of a scrum, ploughing through half a dozen defenders to score in the corner. The two centres, Hanson and Mulligan were a threat throughout the whole match, they also led the tackle count in their defensive duties. Before half time Hanson had completed a hat-trick of tries as Brook again released him with sublimely timed passing. Daniel Horsfield completed the first half scoring with two well taken tries, one being an impressive 60 yard lung buster. With Ryan Matthew conversions, the Hawks led by a comfortable 30 points to nil.
From the Hawks first offensive play of the second half, team Captain Josh Barton, muscled his way through the defensive line to score from 40 yards. Hawks did not have it all their own way. Queens Knights never stopped believing in their own ability and with players like Declan Gilboy and Waleed Akhtar driving the team on they got their reward with a try in the corner. However, a Hawks victory was never in doubt as Liam Hamre, having a storming game at full back, was always in position to snuff-out any serious danger and immediately set-up an attacking position with one of his mesmerising silky runs. Further second half tries from Hanson, Dale Mullligan, Horsfield and Barton emphasised Hawks superiority as the score finished 58 point to 4.
In attack the Hawks looked impressive playing as a cohesive team with some swift passing moves; the Matthews, Brook and Hanson combination looking particularly notable. In defence Cameron Shone put-in some really big hits (he might have a bit of thick lip to prove it) and there was some good work on the wings from Kieran Howard and Adam Milligan. Craig Watson and Simon Town both put-in big tackles when they were needed and Nathan Wood and Kane Bailey did superbly well in their first games at hooker and stand-off respectively.

Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks U14’s (24) 38, Brighouse U14’s (4) 16 .....22nd January 2006

Hawks still soaring and remain undefeated since October

Hanson and Matthews score 26 of the Hawks points

Hawks’ impressive league form continued unabated with this hard fought victory against a very strong and determined Brighouse squad. Aggressive hard hitting tackles were seen right from the start and set the tone for the whole match, add one or two high elbows and the odd swinging arm and you get a fuller picture! It was Hawks who put together the first good piece of rugby after good work from Jack Ward, Josh Barton and Nathan Wood; Ryan Matthews put up a perfect chip into the corner for Corey Hanson to pick up the pieces for the opening try. Hawks soon had Brighouse under more pressure as Barton’s tackle dislodged the ball on the Brighouse 20 yard line; Hanson was on hand to scoop-up the loose ball and drive into the corner for try number two. Brighouse were certainly ‘up for the game’ but a few ‘hand bag’ incidents did not throw the Hawks of track. The Hawks enforced their superiority using their big powerful running props to good affect as Barton ran-in a brace of tries. Brighouse scored a deserved reply as slack Hawks defence left huge gaps for an attack to waltz through. However Hawks were soon back on top and Matthews closed out the half with a try following great work from Liam Hamre and Kieran Howard.

Half time Hawks led 24:4.

Brighouse came out in the second half with all guns blazing and were in the faces of Hawks players, testing their metal. The Brighouse onslaught was rewarded with a try, but this served only to galvanise the Hawks resolve and they showed true character as, using a full set of six they marched down the pitch seeking field position. The Hawks pressure drew a penalty for ripping and Hanson took the attack up to within a yard of the try-line for the quick thinking Adam Brook to scoot under the hesitant Brighouse defence for a converted try. The match was then down to a battle of strength and character, and this Hawks team have both in abundance. Many teams would have wilted under the Brighouse offence (and intimidation) but this Hawks team is far stronger and they know how to grind out a victory. Hanson, using his speed and strength powered through with two further tries to secure a hard fought an dwell deserved 38:16 victory. For all the aggression and intimidation during the match it was good to see both teams respecting each others efforts after the final whistle.

The Mc Man of the Match went to Corey Hanson for a quality all round display, topping the tackle count, four power packed tries and a conversion. Adam Brook, Thomas Haycox and Liam Hamre picked up the teams 3,2,1 awards.

Illingworth U14’s (8) 18, Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks U14’s (6) 12..........29th January 2006

Hawks wounded but still flying high

These are the two top teams in the division and there was nothing between them during a highly physical encounter. The game was marred by the home crowd intimidating a young referee into giving some crucial decisions; the Illingworth crowd should also be castigated for the verbal abuse being aimed at the boys on the field. Back to the RUGBY. The first ten minutes saw both teams making hard earned yardage with powerful drives into the opposition, but defences were always on top. The war of attrition was finally broken as Josh Barton crashed through the Illingworth defence to score a hard earned try

and Ryan Matthews confidently took the additional two points. Hawks put Illingworth under more pressure as the ever willing debutante, Reece Williams drove the ball into the heart of their defence with up to five defenders required to bring his assaults to an end. Against the run of play, Illingworth attacked down the left flank and after two ‘missed’ knock-on’s and a forward pass, they were awarded a try. Hawks were soon back in the Illingworth’s faces. A thunderous two man tackle from Dale Mulligan and Corey Hanson dislodged the ball on the Illingworth ten yard line, as the quick thinking Jono Burns picked up the loose ball and headed towards a certain try the referee pulled play back for the Illingworth knock-on. Shear frustration for the Hawks! The injustice deepened when Illingworth finished off a quick break with yet another blatantly forward pass to ‘score’ in the corner.

Half Time : Illingworth 8 Sheffield 6

Both teams went out looking for a victory and it was Illingworth who again got a favourable nod from the referee as a try was given even though Williams appeared to have held the attacker short of the line. This only fired-up the Hawks to greater efforts. The Illingworth defence was resolute throughout the game and it took a moment of true class to break them down.

Twenty yards out from the Illingworth line Adam Brook drew the Illngworth defence only to slip a perfectly time timed pass to the fast moving Williams to slice through to the try line. Under intense pressure Hanson converted straight down the middle.

14  :  12 GAME ON!!

As the battle intensified and tempers frayed some slack Hawks defence let Illingworth sneak into the corner for the final score of the match. Illingworth 18 -  Hawks 12.

Hawks teamwork and attitude was exemplary throughout the game and they stood strong under the most severe provocation; a special mention for Daniel Horsfield and young Kane Bailey who were consistently in the thick of the action.

The Mc Man of the Match went to Josh Barton for a powerful display with Dale Mulligan, Reece Williams and Kane Bailey picked up the teams 3,2,1 awards.

Hawks wings clipped

Queensbury had done their homework, checking out the Hawks web site following the recent Hawks results; were these very articles instrumental in the Hawks defeat? No, not a bit. Queensbury won by playing better rugby, using the ball through quick assured hands and exploiting the open spaces.

It was Hawks that applied the early pressure with Reece Williams being stopped just short of the try line. However, the powerful Williams was not to be denied as he made a 50 yard burst through the Queensbury defence to secure the first points of the game. Ryan Matthews took the additional two points. Queensbury got a second breath and quickly ran-in two tries (one converted) to take a four point lead. Hawks tried to get back on level terms but they were playing predicable rugby and lacked a sense of flair and adventure. Queensbury snuffed-out the drives down the middle and made the most of some slack Hawks defence to score a further converted try before halftime. 6:16.

Hawks come out for the second half full of fire and determination and soon had Queensbury on the back foot. The pressure was rewarded as no one was going to stop the fast moving Williams as he collected the ball five yards form the line. Matthews’ conversion took the Hawks to within one score of Queensbury. Hawks were soon back within the Queensbury 20 yard line, but the attacks were again too predictable and the defence were able to soak-up the pressure. In attack Queensbury looked to move the ball down the line with swift simple passing pulling the Hawks defence; then with a quick play-the-ball they exploited the gaps that they had created. The Queensbury’s passing play was rewarded with a finely worked try and the conversion restored the ten point gap. Hawks showed some resolve and took the fight back to Queensbury with some fine work from Connor Scott and Daniel Horsfield. Inevitably it was Williams that made the breakthrough as he completed his hat-trick with a seventy yard run slicing through the defence with speed and power. Matthews, reliable as ever reduced the gap yet again to four points. It was Queensbury that finished the stronger, constantly making inroads into the Hawks defence with neat passing moves and it came as no surprise when they broke through for the final try of the game.. Final score 18:28.
Perhaps the two and a half hour session with service area the previous day had taken its toll or perhaps the Hawks just come-up against a side who played better rugby on the day

The Mc Man of the Match went to Daniel Horsfield who was always eager to make the hard yards. Connor Scott, Reece Williams and Jack Ward picked up the teams 3,2,1 awards.

Hawks back on Target

This was a good confidence boost for the Hawks before next weeks semi-final match at Illingworth. Hawks set the tempo for the game with a solid team defence putting the Wyke offence under intense pressure. Such was the dominance of the Hawks defence their try-line was never under serious threat throughout the entire match. In attack Hawks were putting together neat moves through the half back pairing of Adam Brook and Ryan Matthews with fine work out wide from Cameron Shone and Jack Ward on one wing and Joe Bell and Kieran Howard on the other; always creating space and threatening the Wyke try-line. Inevitably it was Hawks who took the lead when Jono Burns seized the opportunity to scoot from two yards out diving under the Wyke defence. Matthews took the additional two points. The Hawks’ pack of Thomas Haycox, Daniel Wilson, Craig Watson and Conner Scott put-in a tremendous amount of graft to keep control the game in the middle of the park and Nathan Wood was always in the right place as the covering fullback. Hawks stepped up a gear with the introduction of Daniel Horsfield and Kane Bailey in the back row and Corey Hanson and Reece Williams at centres. Williams made an immediate impression with his first ball-carry of the game bursting through the Wyke defence with awesome power to score out wide. Hawks quickly built on their superiority as Wyke were forced to drop-out from under the posts following Hansons excellent restart kick; Liam Hamre took the ball perfectly on the full and ghosted through the ragged defence with a silky ease. Within minutes Horsfield had further extended the lead as Brook sent him clear with a perfectly weighted pass and Matthews again converted. Williams finished the first half with another converted try giving Hawks a solid 28 to nil lead.
It was the same story in the second half with most of the game being played well inside the Wyke half. Hawks consistently looked for good field position and then cleverly used the powerful centres to run the ball wide. Williams completed his hat-trick of tries and Hanson ran-in two of his own. There can’t be to many centres that can match this pair for power and pace. Further tries from Burns, Horsfield and Hamre completed the scoring as Hawks ran out convincing 56:0 winners.
The Hawks defence was excellent throughout the game with two and three man tackles being the order of the day. With the ball in hand Hawks looked to spread the play wide with great support throughout the team. It was noticeable that every player contributed well in both attack and defence. A true TEAM performance.

Our thanks to the officials Steve, Tracy and Sal for a fine job.

The Mc Man of the Match went to Jono Burns who headed the tackle count and scooted to a brace of tries. Liam Hamre (back to his very best), Cameron Shone and Nathan Wood took the teams 3,2,1 awards.

Illingworth (10) 18, Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks (0) 14 ...19th February 2006
(After Extra time - full time score 14:14)

Extra-time exit for gallant Hawks

Cup semi-final with both teams well supported by friends and family played on a heavy sticky sloping pitch. Both teams showed some fine rugby skills and bags of heart and determination; it was a real shame that only one team could walk away with a victory.
The early exchanges were very even with both defences resolute and controlling the game. Hawks had a good five minute spell of pressure on the Illingworth 20 yard line as Adam Brook’s kick through was collected by Dale Mulligan only to be smothered by the tight Illingworth defence. Illingworth started to gain more possession and were the first to convert the pressure into points with a try under the posts (converted). Hawks fought back but kept driving through the middle rather than use the space out wide and the Illingworth defence was not going to concede easily. Illingworth scored again with a try in the corner to take a flattering 10:0 lead into half time.
Hawks started the second half with much more commitment and both teams put -in a pulsating second half performance (if it had not been so tense we would have thoroughly enjoyed the rugby). A fine take on the full by Cory Vivian set the tone for the Hawks as they bossed the game, driving deep into the Illingworth half. Hawks camped inside the oppositions 20 yard line as desperate defence gave away penalties. As an initial drive under the posts was rebuffed, the next phase took the ball wider just a yard short of the line. Yes, Jono, scoot try. Ryan Matthews converted to bring the Hawks to within four points. This was a real ding dong battle and Illingworth took the game back to Hawks to force a try an unconverted try in the corner. Hawks now needed two scores. Every Hawks player (and parent on the touch-line) gave everything to pull the game back and their hard work was rewarded as Reece Wiiliams powered over out wide to bring Hawks again to within four points. The referee indicated there was only 90 seconds left. Skilfully, Brook retained possession from his own short kick restart. With the seconds ticking away first Simon Town drove the ball-in, then Williams took the Hawks to within ten yards. Seconds away from the final whistle Corey Hanson gets the bal ten yards out and with one desperate surge scores right in the very corner. 14:14, the final whistle is blown and its into five minutes each way of extra time. Both teams were feeling the sapping nature of the pitch but not one person weakened as both teams gave every last bit of effort and skill. It just didn’t seem right that one of these teams had to loose, but that’s what cup rugby is all about. It was stalemate until the last two minutes of extra time when Illingworth used their men out wide to score the winning try in the corner. Gutted, heart-broken and very nearly tearful (the lads were upset too!).
A great effort by both teams, fantastic entertainment. Remember, win loose or draw, play the game with as much commitment and skill as you possibly can and you can always hold your heads high.

The Mc Man of the Match went to Dale Mulligan for his hard work in both attack and defence. Adam Brook, Cory Vivian and Craig Watson took the teams 3,2,1 awards.

Hawks freeze up at Queensbury

There are three teams in with a chance of winning the league, Illingworth, Queensbury and the HAWKS; every time two of these top three meet you are guaranteed some quality rugby and a fiercely competitive game. This game did not disappoint and although the Hawks came away pointless they also left with a growing respect and good number of rugby friends (although deepest enemies for the 50 minutes playing time!!).
Queensbury started the brighter as Hawks still seemed half asleep allowing Queensbury through without a decent tackle being made. After the initial five minutes spell of Queensbury pressure and trailing by four points Hawks eventually saw some of the ball and were soon threatening the Queensbury goal line. Josh Barton took Hawks to within a yard of the line and Jono Burns dived in for his regular scoot, try. However the Queensbury defence were alert to the danger and managed to block the attempt on the line. Hawks were soon back on the offensive with great drives from Kane Bailey and Corey Hanson as Corey Vivian was stopped just short of the line. When Queensbury knocked-on Hawks took advantage of good field position with Joe Bell making yards to set-up Corey Hanson to go over in the corner. Queensbury struck back with a converted try straight from a badly defended drop-out, to re-establishing a six point advantage. Hawks responded with a clever cross field run from Adam Brook slipping an offload pass to Williams who made no mistake with the remaining five yards to the line. Hawks were getting more into the game and were trying to use the ball with some slick passing moves. Unfortunately such adventure backfired as Queensbury intercepted on their own 20 yard line and went the full length of the pitch to score under the posts. Half time 16:8.
Hawks were again punished by a superb interception as they passed the ball in the middle of the pitch; Queensbury took full advantage as they scored under the posts for another converted try. Hawks kept their discipline and continued to try and use the big centres out wide. Williams received the ball in the open space on the half way line and was able to speed away from the broken Queensbury line. Ryan Matthews converted to bring Hawks back into the game. Although Hawks had marginally the greater possession it was Queensbury that made the telling break to take a 28 to 14 lead. Hawks threatened the Queensbury line but on several occasions handling errors proved costly. Hawks did run-in the final try of the game as Barton claimed a much deserved try. Hawks went down 28:18 in a thoroughly entertaining and sporting encounter. Queensbury warmly applauded the Hawks efforts and praised the team for their endeavour and sportsmanship (a special mention for Simon Town who was commended for his mature attitude). The league title is still up for grabs, see next time Queensbury!

An extra special mention for one our longer serving members, NATHAN WOOD. We wish you all the luck in world as you move home to Lincolnshire; its been a pleasure having you as a player and your smiling face will be missed around Hillsborough. Remember, you’ll ALWAYS be a HAWK.

The Mc Man of the Match went to NATHAN WOOD for his hard work in both attack and defence (& years of great HAWKS service). Simon Town, Corey Hanson and Reece Williams took the teams 3,2,1 awards.

Another impressive team performance by the Hawks saw them run-in eleven tries spread between nine different players. From the kick off Hawks put Queens Knights under intense pressure as a good team chase kept them hemmed in their own half. Within five minutes Hawks had turned their dominance into points as firstly Dale Mulligan took a perfect offload pass from Danny Wilson to burst through from the half way line scoring under the posts and then Adam Brook took advantage of the space after a Queens Knights knock-on from the restart. Ryan Matthews confidently converting both opportunities. Queens Knights kicked long to give their defence some relief, however Jack Ward calmly collected the ball and side-stepped the oncoming runners to release Corey Hanson to run wide of the shell-shocked defence to score in the corner. It was the Hawks restart kicks from both Hanson and Matthews, that set the whole tone of the match as Queens Knights were always put on the back foot with the Hawks defence constantly in their faces. More Hawks pressure brought a scrum to the Hawks 40 yards out; three quick drives and Jono Burns was in position to muscle over the line from five yards. Hawks were constantly on the attack and after fine work from Liam Hamre and a driving run from Craig Watson, Connor Scott found himself with space to surge for the line for a power-packed try. Jono Burns added a further try before Josh Barton finished the half with a splendid try after Tom Haycox had broken the defensive line.

Half time Hawks 36, Queens Knights 0.

All credit to Queens Knights as they started the second half full of vigour and took the game to the Hawks. After a Hawks high tackle, the quickly taken penalty had the defence off guard and Queens Knights deservedly scored in the corner. Hawks struck back in style as Brook took the restart ball on his own goal line and released Kieran Howard who burst through the oncoming defensive line and showed everyone a clean pair of heals finishing his 90 yard sprint under the posts (only the referee was fast enough to stay with him!!). Hawks had to fight hard to regain superiority and after a sustained period of pressure Brook took control of the ball on the half way line and with two side-steps broke through the flat defence; as the try line approached Brook was selling more dummies than Mothercare and was finally caught just five yards short of the line. Haycox, alert and in support was on hand to take up the ball and finish off a fine try. More Hawks pressure saw Daniel Horsfield and Cameron Shone combine well in the midfield with Cory Vivian’s deft kick through releasing Joe Bell to score in the corner. Kane Bailey and Simon Town put in the hard work in both attack and defence and every one of the nineteen-man squad contributed well to the tackle count. Hawks final score of the game was perfectly executed as Matthews dummied a pick-up from the back of the scrum allowing Barton to take the ball on the blind-side and Hanson finished off with a try in the corner. Queens Knights showed great character as they fought-on to the last whistle and were rewarded with the final try of the game.

This was the best TEAM performance of the season and was only matched by the last home performance of the season from the two Lisa’s (Howard and Watson). No one sells more raffle tickets than the persistent Lisa Howard and Lisa Watson, who is now famous throughout the West Riding League for the quality of her cooking (a special thanks for the cake and buns from all of her ‘adopted children’).

And finally, thank you to the officials, Steve, Sal and Jack.

Try scoring debut

It has been said that forwards win matches and the backs decide by how many. This was certainly the case with today’s match as the victory owed more to the solid hard working defence than the more powerful noticeable powerful running try scorers. Craig Watson and Simon Town set the tone with big tackles in the first five minutes knocking the opposition out of their stride. Hawks put the first points on the board after some neat passing found Corey Hanson with space to exploit; with pace and power he was able to carve through the defence leaving Ryan Matthews a simple conversion under the posts. Hawks started to take control of the game, but playing up-hill it was always going to be a tough job to convert possession into points. Queens Knights, to their credit kept coming back at the Hawks and were justly rewarded with try in the corner. This seemed to galvanise Hawks into upping their play and they soon struck back as Patrick O’Leary marked his Hawks debut scoring a tremendous ‘team’ try in the corner following a movement that flowed through the hands after a Hanson offload. It was great to see Hawks put the training ground work into practice. Hawks went into the half time break with a 12 to 4 lead.

Playing with the slope Hawks soon had Queens Knights trapped in their own half and as Dale Mulligan offloaded in the tackle Josh Barton was on hand to Power through the tackles to score in the corner. From the restart Hawks were awarded a penalty as Queens Knights played the ball before it had passed the 10 yard line. Adam Brook tapped and passed wide to Reece Williams who had started his run from deep; once motoring nothing, not even a brick wall, was going to stop Williams as he ran half the pitch to score between the posts. The opposition found it hard to break out of the own half, mainly because of consistently solid tackling from the Hawks defence. Once in possession, Hawks were looking to mix the passing game along with the direct powerful running. Credit must be given to the wingers, Cameron Shone and Jack Ward who although saw relatively little of the ball, played an important part in stretching the game out wide. Hawk scored three further tries; a trade mark Jono Burns scoot following a big Barton drive, a Dale Mulligan ‘crash’ through the last line of defence (an excellent pass out by Cory Vivian) and finally Hanson finished with a 40 yard burst to secure his brace of tries.

Hawks put in a excellent team performance and it was pleasing to see the team trying some of routines that they have been working-on at training. A special mention for Patrick O’Leary who played out on the wing (he tells me he’s a second rower!) and was rewarded with a try on his debut.

The Mc Man of the Match went to Josh Barton for a powerful display. Simon Town, Corey Hanson and Liam Hamre took the teams 3,2,1 awards.

Hawks put in a tremendous first half performance to secure a hard earned victory. After defending the first Brighouse attack the Hawks had a scrum on their own 10 yard line. Thomas Haycox sent a quick ball out to Adam Brook who immediately passed onto Cory Vivian who kept the ball moving finding Corey Hanson with space to exploit; Hanson ran the length of the pitch to score between the posts. Hawks kept Brighouse penned in their own territory with a combination of disciplined defence and some ball handling errors. Hawks punished any weakness as Haycox drove to within two yards of the line, up stepped Jono Burns at acting half back to scoot through a disorganised defence. The Hawks defence was well organised with every member of the team moving-up in unison. This forced the opposition into making errors as they tried to force the play. From a dropped ball, Burns secured possession inside the Brighouse territory and Dale Mulligan was on hand to muscle his way through the defence for the Hawks third try. Daniel Horsfield, who was magnificent in both attack and defence, ran in a comfortable try and Hanson got his second after fine work from Patrick O’Leary and Ashley Dillon (making a fine debut). Josh Barton powered over in the corner just before half time to give the Hawks a 32:0 lead.

The second half was a total contrast to the excellent rugby seen in the first 25 minutes. The game became a scrappy affair with numerous penalties for high tackles and plenty of ‘hand bag’ stuff being dished out on the blind side of the referee. As both teams became embroiled in the physical encounter the rugby ball was almost a secondary concern. There was not one full set completed in the whole of the second half. The only additional score came after drives from Craig Watson, Horsfield and Vivian gave the Hawks good field position from where Hanson was able to run wide and score in the corner.

We were spoilt with such a superb first half performance. Not once did a Hawks coach have to give the defensive line a reminder; it was great to see every individual taking responsibility for their job in the line creating an impressive defensive wall. In attack Hawks made the pitch big moving the ball to the flanks and were justly rewarded in the first half. The second half - well sometimes it just goes that way. Concentrate on the rugby boys!

The Mc Man of the Match went to Daniel Horsfield who was always willing to make the difficult yards. Ashley Dillon, Ryan Matthews and Adam Brook took the teams 3,2,1 awards.

Wyke U14's (1) 13, Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks U14's (24) 50......9th April 2006

Snow kidding it’s summer rugby!

With all my notes sodden as the rain turned to driving snow, this report will have to be shorter than normal. With Wyke’s main pitch still under water the match was played on a junior pitch not much more than half the size of a standard field. Corey Hanson was smart enough (thanks to Mr Brook for the quick tip) to drive his kick-off hard and low so that they didn’t go straight into touch. On three consecutive kick-off’s Hawks had Wyke in trouble; from the very start Hawks regained possession just a few yards short of the line. Quick hands from Hanson found the winger, Joe Bell, in perfect position to finish in the corner. Connor Scott and Hanson ran-in further tries after Wyke drop-outs gave Hawks good field position. Jono Burns intercepted a Wyke pass on their own goal line for a gift of a try and Dale Mulligan powered through to take the half time score to Wyke 1 (a fine drop goal) Hawks 24.
Hawks were making several substitutions and the team did well to retain some form of structure, largely due to the fine influence and direction of Adam Brook (who was also top tackler in the short period he was on the field). Daniel Wilson and Josh Barton had big games in the front row with Craig Watson and Connor Scott giving great support in the pack. Wyke put up a spirited performance in the second half with two excellent converted tries. Hawks were made to concentrate and increase their work rate to stay in control of the match and tries from Reece Williams, Josh Barton, Kieran Howard and a further two from hat-trick man Hanson sealed a 13:50 victory.

Both sides did superbly well in atrocious conditions; I’m just sorry that my lack of notes means that the reporting does not do the boys justice.

The Mc Man of the Match went to Dale Mulligan in a match that saw him use his brains as well his muscle.

Rob's Thoughts:

I think that the boys deserve an immeasurable amount of praise as they have grown as a team throughout the season & their league record is immense

 ·   In eighteen league games they won 14, lost 4, points for 672, points against 215

 ·   In the Yorkshire cup they defeated Charleston Knights up in Hull and were unlucky to go out to an extremely strong Ideal Isberg outfit.

·   In the West Riding Cup there was close defeat by Premiership Keighley; in the subsequent Plate competition they were beaten at the semi-final stage by a try in extra time (certainly the most exciting match of the season).

The squad of 24 will be splitting into an U15 and U14 side for next season (9 of the squad having played up a year).

Webmasters thoughts.....Well done to everyone in the U14 squad. It would be unfair to single out any one particular player. It has been v encouraging to see RL played to such a high level in a non league area. It is now up to you to work towards greater things next year and go on to be as good, if not better than some of those other locals who have gone on to play professional RL. Simon Morton being the latest star at Sheffield Eagles... a product of the Sheffield Schools and The Hawks. There have been stars at every match. There have been defensive frailties and superb aggressive attacks. The photos taken by Karl Watson have been great and have put you on the map, especially with TARGET EXPRESS, Metals & Plant Ltd, Capital Tower and Shield Financial Services.  Well done U14s

and finally........ The End of Season Awards 2006

Only lost four league games & beaten in extra time at the semi final stage of the league cup. Eleven of the squad selected for South Yorkshire Squad. Two years ago we started the season with 8 players, we end this season splitting the team into two age groups (9 of the boys have been playing a year above their age) for next season forming two very strong teams at U15 and U14. Hawks also have extremely strong squads at U16, U13 and U12's and are forming a new U9/U10's team for the 2006/07 season. The junior section goes from strength to strength which can only be good for the Hawks future and the future of rugby league in Sheffield. The Eagle's might soon be 'feathering their nest' with some of these young Hawks.
