Under 15s - Premier Division - Reports

 Hillsborough Hawks  (0) 0   Newsome Panthers  (20) 48 - 11th September

Hillsborough started their Premier League campaign with the most difficult of challenges, a home tie against last seasons champions Newsome Panthers. Hillsborough contributed to their own downfall by making a poor start to the game conceding 14 points in the first few sets of play. Only after this did they manage to mount a serious challenge and keen defence restricted Newsome to only one converted try in the remainder of the first half to turn around 0-20 down. Hillsborough had a bright start to the second half pushing for a try. Then Newsome used their class and scored a bundle of cleverly worked tries. Towards the end of the game the Hillsborough squad started to tire and a few more tries were conceded.  Overall this was the most difficult start possible and there were many positives. Jackson and Bojang made promising debuts, the former was named man of the match. Hawksworth and Battye shone in the forwards and Tyers and Khoza made strong contributions in the backs. The squad has lost a number of players from last year and new players are most welcome to Tuesday training at (6pm).

Hillsborough’s local derby with Huddersfield Sharks turned into a bruising encounter.

Hillsborough had their customary slow start which Huddersfield needed no invitation to exploit. In no time they established a 12-0 lead with two well worked converted tries. This was the spur the Hawks needed, Jackson’s constant probing was rewarded with a fine try but the conversion from Swire went astray. Hawksworth made no such mistake when adding the extras to Vivian’s close range effort. The teams turned around with only 2 points between them. The Hawks wilted under Huddersfield’s aggressive approach which tested the match officials. Unfortunately the Hawks ill discipline saw their first half rally go to waste as two sin bin offences left the defence threadbare and Huddersfield scored four times to record a flattering 10-32 victory. The Hawks had several fine individual displays of which Vivian’s solid defence was the pick. They need a solid team spirit before they will record a victory in this premier league.

West Bowling (8) 24 Hillsborough Hawks  (16) 40 : 25th September

West Riding Cup

Hillsborough opened their season's account with a deserved win over West Bowling. The match started in a predictable fashion with the Hawks letting in an unconverted try, after an unreturned kick off. Hillsborough then went up a gear, feeding Khoza the ball and he ran the length of the pitch to score under the posts, for Swire to convert. West Bowling again exploited gaps down the Hawks left hand defence, to force their way over to edge 8-6 in front. This was the last time they led, as first Hawksworth, followed by his second row partner Battye, powered over and Swire added one conversion for a 8-16 half time lead. Hawks made the most of the strong wind as first Battye completed his hat-trick and then Ashton scored his second. Vivian added a typical scrum-half's effort from close range. Swire added two conversions and Hawks reached 40 points. A complacent period saw West Bowling finish strongly with three tries. Although this took the gloss of the performance it was a well deserved victory, the first ever away at West Bowling.

Scorers: Tries:- Hawksworth, Khoza, Battye (3), Ashton (2), Vivian  Goals:- Swire (4)

 Huddersfield Sharks U15’s:58 : Hillsborough Hawks U15’s: 6 - 2nd October

Hawks were not up to their required standard today at Huddersfield Sharks. An early knock on sent Sharks under the posts for their first converted try, more poor play followed and Sharks used their team to the full to establish a 16 point lead early in the half. Hawks then started to play to their potential, completing a number of well played sets eventually turning into a try scored by Jackson, this was converted by Swire. At half-time the game was still in the balance at 16-6.
Hawks did not repeat their first half performance by letting in a number of unanswered tries to let the match become hugely beyond their reach. Sharks did not again get tested as the match drew to a close at 58-6. Daniel Hawksworth worked himself to the bone playing brilliantly both tackling and running. A big improvement is needed to establish themselves as a Premiership team.

Man of the Match was deservedly earned by the Hawks captain Daniel Hawksworth

Hillsborough Hawks U15’s: 14 Queensbury Juniors U15’s: 48.................9th October 2005

Hillsborough had a bright start to this encounter with Queensbury by scoring two tries in the first ten minutes, one unconverted try by Sheard and the second was touched down by Swire and converted by Hawksworth. Hillsborough squandered a number of chances which could have killed Queensbury off. This made Queensbury wake up by scoring 3 tries, one which was converted. This led to a 10-14 lead at half-time to Queensbury. The second half was one of the poorest Hawks had ever played. Many mistakes were made and this resulted to a 10-36 lead. Latham touched down in the corner to lift the Hawks spirits temporarily before crashing back down to earth with another two tries by Queensbury. This left the score at full time: 14-48.

Kings Cross U15s 52 Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks U15s 0 ..........16th October

Hawks started the game well with some good quality pressure on the Kings Cross team. There was good running and tackling, when Kings Cross had the ball, which forced them into making errors. Unfortunately Hawks did not capitalise on this and after a solid ten minutes Hawks then conceded their first try. Throughout the rest of the half, Hawks only played well in patches , and ended the half by conceding a few more well worked tries. A tough first half finished Kings Cross 26 Hillsborough 0.

Hawks played poor quality rugby in the second half, knocking on and making other mistakes. Kings Cross took their chances and ran in a number of tries. Towards the end of the half, Hawks started to play well. Kings Cross's discipline was fairly poor and there were some questionable decisions being made by the officials. As the end of the match approached, Kings Cross scored more well worked tries. The final score does suggest it was an easy match for the home side but the Hawks certainly made them work for all of their points, and it was not an easy task. The final score: Kings Cross 52 Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks 0.

Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks U15’s (0) 0 Wibsey U15’s (28) 50 ......13th November

Hawks entertained high riding Wibsey with an injury- ravaged side. Hawks started solidly tackling well and creating opportunities on the ball. Wibsey eventually crossed for a well worked try which changed the momentum of the game. Hawks could not return kick-offs and conceded a stream of goal line dropouts resulting in a number of Wibsey tries. The Hawks line was under constant siege and only the half time whistle, with the score at 0-28 offered any respite.
The start of the second half followed the same pattern. Hawks did not get off to the start they wanted, when Wibsey touched down straight away due to poor defence. This happened regularly throughout the second half to give Wibsey the majority of the point’s margin. There were bright spells for Hawks in the second half with some good runs being put in and some hard-hitting tackles. Towards the end of the game Wibsey started to lack discipline with one player being sent off and numerous others being sent to the sin bin. Man of the Match - Benjamin Tyers consistently put in runs and tackled well and he was well supported by Daniel Hawksworth and who was the pick of the forwards.

Newsome 32 Hillsborough Hawks 0 ...... 27th November

This match was abandoned at half time after a serious injury to Hawks prop Ashley "Basher" Statham. Basher sustained a broken leg whilst driving the ball at the Newsome line.

A major challenge became an impossibility when illness reduced the Hawks' squad to 11 fit players. Yet the team performed creditably and did not conceded in the first 10mins and where unlucky not to open the scoring when Fox followed up a smart chip only for the Panthers to scramble the ball dead. When Newsome opened the scoring  they gained sufficient momentum to cross the line almost at will. Vivian's distribution and defence shone and he was ably supported by Hawksworth and Tyers who grafted hard for the cause. Newsome played expansive football and made the most of their advantage to open up a 32 - 0 gap before the injury brought a premature ending to proceedings.

Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks U15s (0) 4 Queens Knights U15s (16) 34......4th December 2005

Leaky defence allows opposition to score too easily

The Hawks regular problem of not being able to returning the kick-off came back to haunt them and gifted Queens an early converted try. Queens seized this early advantage and laid siege to the Hawks line quickly building a 16-0 lead. This woke Hillsborough up resulting in some good attacking play in when Vivian was unlucky not to score. Hillsborough wasted two very good chances, to get back into the game but better defence denied Queens the opportunity to add to their early scores leaving the half-time score at 0-16.
Hillsborough attacked well in spells in the second half, but unfortunately it came to no avail, with Hawks not crossing the try line. Queens took advantage of a leaky defence to score another try. Hillsborough did manage to salvage some pride with Sheard diving over from dummy half. This left the score at 4-22. Hawks felt they were still in with a shout. Some tough exchanges followed with some good attacking sets by both sides. Hillsborough’s troubles returned with a number of tries being scored due to a very poor defence. Full time score : 4 - 34.
Man of the Match: Edward Battye proved a valuable member of the team today with some brilliant running and tackling., Daniel Hawksworth and Ben Vivian also gave good accounts of themselves.

Hillsborough Hawks U15’s: 0 Dewsbury Celtic U15’s: 24

Hawks hosted highflying Dewsbury in what proved to be a very tough encounter. Hawks took up the challenge with a threadbare squad and proved to be worthy opponents. From the start the forwards were a very improved unit, they were not to be intimidated by the much larger Dewsbury pack. Hawks put in their best performance of the season. Dewsbury attacked the Hillsborough line with speed and pace but Hawks defence held up with some superb hits driving the Dewsbury attacking line back. Hawks retaliated by battering the Dewsbury line with Vivian at the heart of most of the moves. To Dewsbury’s credit their defence held firm, in return they pounced on two rare errors to register two well worked breakaway tries to establish 0-12 lead that flattered them.
The second half followed a similar pattern. Hawks attacked the Dewsbury line set after set but no tries were scored. Once again Dewsbury replied with two breakaway tries. At 0-24 the game was beyond the Hawks. The result was far from an accurate reflection of the game in which the Hawks team played a full part in making Dewsbury earn their victory.
Man of the Match: Hawksworth, Batteye and Jackson were at the heart of the Hawks’ pack and were well supported by Dominic Hunter whose all round contribution deservedly earned him his first man of the match award.

Hillsborough Hawks U15s: 0 Headingley Hawks U15s: 48

Hillsborough entertained a highflying Headingley side in the first fixture of the New Year. Hawks were hoping to start the year with a win.

Hawks started in similar fashion with a mistake from kick-off leading to a Headingley attack. For the next 20 minutes Hawks attacked well and defence was stubborn with no Headingley attack coming to anything, due to hard-hitting tackles. Eventually Headingley found a gap out wide and exploited it stretching the Hawks defence and finding a try, no conversion was added. Headingley then took advantage of the Hawks worn down defence running in a number of tries leaving the score at 0-20.

Some uncharacteristic handling errors meant the Hawks were defending for most of the second half. Headingley took the initiative to score a number of tries against a tired defence. This left the full time score at 0-48.
The score did not reflect at all on the Hawks defence or attack.

Man of the Match: The forwards were well led by Hawksworth and Battye with Khoza looking the most dangerous back.

Wibsey U15’s: (30) 72  Hillsborough Hawks U15’s: (4) 4 ....29th January 2006

Hawks started this bruising encounter in excellent fashion compared to other games with a returned kick off and some hard hitting defence and a fast unpredictable attack. A number of errors led to Wibsey scoring two tries in two minutes leaving the score at 0-12 to Wibsey. Good pressure exerted  by Latham gained the Hawks a good field position which , Sheard exploited by  finishing a flowing handling movement he dived in at the corner for Hawks first try in two months. After this Hawks were poor in both attack and defence, Wibsey took the advantage and ran in a number of tries leaving the half time score at 4-30.

Hawks had to play up the hill in the second half, and Wibsey once again took advantage using the slope and a weary defence to score a number of tries leaving the full time score at 4-72. The score does not reflect on how Hawks played as in spells they looked the better team.

Man of the Match: BATTYE earnt his man of the match reward, he was at the heart of the attack in most plays and defended well. Hawksworth assisted him in similar fashion and Latham had a strong game with his defence and attack.

Hawks recorded their first league victory of the current campaign with a comfortable victory over a weakened Elland team.

Hawks were punished for a complacent start when poor tackling allowed Elland to register the first score. Eventually Hawks started to benefit from their numerical advantage and Khoza crossed finishing a swift handling move for Hawksworth to convert . Elland never gave up the chase and were rewarded
with a second unconverted try but Hawks now sensed a rare victory aided by second Khoza try and a close range effort by Jackson, both converted by Hawksworth, resulted in an 18-8 interval lead.

Hawks carried on their strong lead with a Jackson brace and an excellent solo try by Khoza, which marked a well earned hat trick for him. Elland scored again but never really managed to find anything to grasp hold off, with Battye powering over for a try in the corner. Full Time score: 32:20

Man of the Match: BEN VIVIAN thoroughly deserved his man of the match with an towering performance, consistently running, tackling and being at the heart of most of the handling movements throughout the majority of the match.

 Queensbury Juniors (4) 16 Hillsborough Hawks U15’s (0) 0 ....February 12 - 2006

Hillsborough arrived in Queensbury on a high from their win against Elland a week ago. Hawks hoped to exploit this against Queensbury, starting the game with added confidence. The sodden pitch and a battering wind combined to provide the most challenging of conditions. Hawks exchanged blows with Queensbury both being strong in attack and defence. The Hillsborough defence was eventually broken down when Queensbury threw the ball down the line and the winger raced in for the try. The rest of the first half was tough with both sides’ defences being worked hard. Hawks had a golden opportunity to even the game out near half time but a knock on cut out the possibility.

Half time score: 4 - 0

Hawks put in raw effort in the second half with the Queensbury attack being worked hard. Another opportunity to square the game came along but once again a knock on hampered the Hawks celebrations. Queensbury intercepted a poor pass and the winger touched down to make the game 0-12. Hawks played their hearts out with Battye and Hawksworth both running hard and putting in big hits consistently. Hawks spirits were demoralised with Queensbury scoring a late try to make the final score 0-16. The score did not reflect on how the Hawks played.

Man of the Match: BATTYE earned his man of the match reward with him putting in over 30 drives and well over 20 tackles. HAWKSWORTH was not far behind him with a similar amount of drives.

LATHAM put in an impressive performance on his last appearance this season.

Dewsbury Celtic U15’s: 56 Hillsborough Hawks U15’s: 8 ....26th February 2006

Hillsborough played a physical, blow to blow match against a riled up Dewsbury side on a wet morning.

Opening exchanges between the sides looked promising for the Hawks with attack and defence even between Hawks and Celtic. Eventually the Hawks defence tired which resulted in Celtic scoring the first two tries. A consistent attack resulted in a hard fought Jackson try, which wasn’t converted. Celtic seemed to be the fitter of the sides with them taking advantage of an error-prone defence and attack resulting in four unanswered tries all converted before the half-time whistle. Half-time score: 32-4

Almost straight away after the hooter Hawks once again started strongly with forwards and backs both working hard. It took a hard working Dewsbury side five minutes to score their first try in the second half, resulting in a further two tries which gave the boost the Hawks needed. Hillsborough took advantage of poor discipline in the Celtic line, giving Hawks the chance they needed, scoring in the corner through Khoza. After this Celtic came out string and took it hard to the Hillsborough line going in with two tries out of which only one was converted. This scoreline flatters Dewsbury, with them being worked hard in sections. Final Score: 56-8  Man of the Match: Ben Tyers

Comment from a Hawks supporter:

Dom I think you should have mentioned yourself in the match report , today you were awesome . Credit to Hillsborough with only 13 players no subs and a couple of very tired* (Edited comment!) players !!! Dewsbury played to their supporters: I say fair play to Hillsborough for giving a bit back. My man of the match would go to Dominic Hunter and to Daniel Hawksworth for the guts he showed..  [The complete comment has been abridged-Ed]

Elland U15s  (4) 4 Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks U15s  (20)40 ...19th March 2006
HAWKS SWOOP ON UNSUSPECTING PREY

Hawks travelled to Elland on a windy day expecting a hard, physical and encounter as they sought their first double of the season. Reality contradicted expectations as straight from the kick-off Hawks looked the better side both in attack and defence. Within two minutes of the starting whistle Vivian crossed for a well worked try, converted by Hawksworth. Elland looked the poorer side with an error-strewn attack and a leaky defence. Hawks took full advantage of this with a number of tries from Tyers, and Jackson, (2). Hawksworth added a single conversion to build up a 20-0 lead, a near perfect half was marred by a late Elland try.

Hawks started the second half in style with stubborn defence and strong attack. Battye scoring his first try, which was coolly converted by Hawksworth, minutes later a second try followed in style with a length of the field try. Khoza soon followed with his first try, darting through the defence to dive over. Jackson capitalised on a solid performance scoring a further try to rightly earn his hat-trick. Debutant kicker Hunter added two more points to finish the game on a high. This is a real confidence booster for Hawks who have a difficult end to the campaign.

Man of the Match: JACKSON earnt his award with a hat trick of tries and stubborn attack and defence. He was closely followed by HAWKSWORTH and BATTYE who also gave similar performances. Today's top tackler was PEARCE.

Queens Knights U15s: (14) 38 Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks U15s:(0)  0...2nd April 2006

Queens Knights entertained a highflying Hawks. The conditions were mixed with a typical dose of April showers and the match was played under the daunting shadow of Kirkstall Abbey.
The Hawks seemed to still be playing tricks from April Fools day as Queens raced over in the opening sets to score an unconverted try. This seemed to give Hawks the kick they needed as they played some very good sets in both attack and defence. The forwards were a good, strong unit with Bojang making some excellent yards and Hawks were stubborn in defence with no one seeming to be able to penetrate it. Hillsborough were in times excellent in attack, being very unlucky not to score a number of tries. Eventually the line was penetrated with Queens being able to touch down in the corner for another unconverted try. Once again Hawks attacked and attacked once again unlucky not to score. Alas, all good things come to an end as the defence seemed to go to sleep as a Queens prop ran half the pitch to score a converted try.

Hillsborough went into the second half wanting to claim points from this encounter. At times they once again looked like they might be able to do it but defence let the Hawks down as Knights exploited it down the wing to run in an number of unanswered tries. At times Hawks were extremely sloppy in attack being very predictable. Eventually tiredness seemed to set in as Queens touched down a few more to leave the full-time score at 38-0. This does not reflect on the game as Hawks worked extremely hard in parts and defence looked premiership standard.

Man of the Match: TYERS earned his award with his attack being superb in parts and he never gave up. Khoza’s tackling was also super with no-one getting past him.

Seasonal farewell

Newsome showed their Championship credentials by putting a weakened and understrength Hawks squad to the sword. A difficult task became almost impossible when late withdrawals reduced the Hawks team to eleven fit players. A hesitant and error ridden Hawks start followed which allowed Newsome to display the skills which have enabled them to dominate the premier league. It was not until just before the interval when the Hawks put their hosts under any meaningful pressure and Hawksworth was cruelly denied at the corner.

The second half provided little respite as Newsome scored almost at will. Ryan Morton     made a good impression on his debut in testing circumstances and Hawksworth showed up well in a pack that struggled to match the Panthers for power.

This game concluded the Hawks first season in the premier competition. A squad light in numbers has competed hard all season and recorded three victories. Credit needs to go to the team who have faced a steep learning curve, attendance at training and games has been high and the experience should be valuable when the squad reassembles for next season.
