SHEFFIELD
HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS JUNIORS v HUDDERSFIELD SHARKS
November 12 2005 at Galpharm Stadium, Huddersfield
This was a historic occasion as it was the Junior Hawks first proper
game of contact rugby and a great honour to play before an international
match. After a long build up the players finally took to the pitch with
words of encouragement from the New Zealand internationals fresh in
their minds. There was no time for a warm up practice – time on this
ground was too precious on this grand occasion.
The referee lined the teams up and Huddersfield kicked off. The Hawks
line was pummelled and after a hard set of six the Sharks were only a
metre short. It was time for the Hawks to show off all the skills they
practise every week in training, Huddersfield were like a brick wall
tackling in 3’s and 4’s. It took a barging run from Tom Bower carrying 4
players with him from the opposition to finally reach halfway. The
Sharks put on a strong attack, only heroic defending and teamwork again
stopped them less than a metre short of the try line. This was a very
tough game and a precise pass from Carl Gregory to Patrick Burns (Paddy)
who carved his way through the Sharks for the opening try. Huddersfield
hit back and they took advantage of the only missed tackle of the day to
level scores. The next attack began and after quick passing from Tom
Bower and Joe Ashworth to Angus McArthur, he broke through to score a
fine try. Now the Hawks were working well as a team and with Carl
Gregory, Daniel Henshaw and Martin Brooks using their excellent passing
skills sent Joel Hirst flying down the wing to give the Hawks a 12-4
lead at half time.
The Hawks made three substitutions to bring fresh legs on, Huddersfield
desperate to score battered the Hawks line but their defence and
tackling was not going to fall and they could barely get past halfway.
Hillsborough Hawks chairman Ian Annis remarked it was this fierce
tackling that caused the Sharks to drop a little. Jacob Renn followed by
Mathew Marshall made strong runs down the middle which set up William
Beatson who although tackled 2 metres from the try line threw a
basketball pass to the supporting Patrick Burns to dive in at the corner
scoring his second try of the match. Excellent tackling skills by Joe
Ashworth, Patrick Burns, Angus McArthur led to an interception of the
ball by Nathan Brown who broke clear only to be halted by a crunching
Sharks tackle but managed to send a long pass to William Beatson who
raced 30 metres to score a try. A very near second try by Joel Hirst but
was held back at the try line by strong group of the Shark players.
Hawks were now clearly on top and Joe Ashworth capped an all action
display escaping the clutches of 5 Shark players.
Final score Sheffield Hillsborough
Hawks 24 – Huddersfield Sharks 4.
All the players from both sides deserve the highest praise for their
good behaviour, bravery and professionalism on the day and all the
parents should feel very proud of a great day out, capped off by a Great
Britain victory.
Man of the match was awarded to Patrick Burns for a complete performance
of tackling, passing, running and try scoring and closely followed by 11
other stars of the future. Special thanks to Team Manager were given by
coach Mark Hellewell for making the day run like ‘clockwork’. Special
thanks to the coaches Mark Hellewell, Paul Brown and Pat Lee for all
their hard work in training.
