Brave show by Hawks against  a well disciplined and "together" team

Bryn, Ricky and Craig stop Fieldhouse this time

Bramley's Fieldhouse stopped by Evans, Gregory and Shaw

Report by SBell & JFurniss

Bramley came with 17 players determined to nil Hawks according to the prior publicity
Hawks kicked off to Bramley and within minutes Sheffield had conceded a penalty only for Bramley to knock on due to some early Hawks pressure. Soon Bramley capitalised on Hawks loosing the ball, and went on to score in the seventh minute with a good try from Gavin Williamson who went through a non-existent Hawks defence. This was converted by Paul Drake. It was not until the 10th minute when Hawks completed their first set of six, but luck was certainly not on their side and the Buffaloes went through the weak defence to score their second converted try on 15 minutes. Continued poor Hawks defending allowed the Buffaloes to score two more tries, one converted, have one disallowed after the touch judge indicated the player had been held up before the Hawks burst into action on the 27th minute when a long pass was made only for Andy Carson to pluck the ball from the air and run forty metres to score under the posts. He subsequently converted his try.
Bramley were not put out of their stride and they came back with fierce determination to score two more converted unanswered tries.
On the 49th minute Bramley scored once again which agitated the Hawks coach to the extent that his enthusiasm for motivating the team upset the referee who asked him to return to the technical area. Hawks started putting in some big hits and Bramley were beginning to make errors. Hawks put in a huge 40/20 which took them to within yards on the Bramley line. This pressure paid off and Bryn Evans went in on the 60th minute, close to the corner, for the Hawks second try, which Carson duly converted.

Bryn Touches Down for the Hawks

Within minutes of the restart Bramley's hooker, Simon Bowker powered over near the posts and Drake obliged with the conversion.
Bramley had taken the driving seat again, only to find that the Hawks had found a second wind with Ricky Gregory and Ben Arnaud

putting in a tremendous amount of tackles and Malcolm-Downes making telling breaks which Bramley had to repell and have several penalties awarded against them for the methods they were employing.
The Bramley pressure continued and they went in for their final, unconverted, try after 15 minutes of not being able to break the Hawks resolve, but the Hawks were not to give up and a good break from the Hawks set up the try of the match, with Araud and Gregory making a good break and a wonderful overhead pass went to Gareth Simpson who went in for the final try of the match, which Carson converted, giving him a 100% record in the first game. This became the final action of the second half and gave the Hawks supporters encouragement seeing a good display against a well drilled Bramley outfit.

Hemel Hempstead 94 Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks 6..23rd April 2006

HEMEL stand-off Matt Walton was the six-try star of a red-hot Stags performance as they swamped the depleted Hawks. Carrying on where they left off at Dewsbury, the Stags celebrated their first home match of the campaign with a totally dominant. highly impressive display. The writing was on the wall for the visitors inside the opening five minutes as first prop Ryan Isiah crashed through some flimsy defence and then Chris Caws exploited a gap to cross. By the 12th minute, the lead had been doubled, Scott Roberts sending in Ross McKinnon and then Troy Perkins doing likewise for Lyle Reck. A 40-metre break from McKinnon brought the next score and a brilliant off load by Caws to Sean Lovett made it 34 - 0 after 26 minutes. Roberts profited from Steve Sutcliffe’s break before Walton posted four tries on the bounce inside 12 minutes either side off half time. An 80-metre break by Jarred Riki allowed Roberts to put Barry-John Swindells in, his try complementing 15 successful shots at goal — his only miss hitting the post - for a personal haul of 34 points. Brilliant interplay in midfield involving at least a dozen passes which thrilled the home crowd, ended with a 30-metre dash to the line for Walton’s fifth and he unselfishly sent Chris Hodgetts in soon after. Hawks’ only reward came late on when Simon Lomas sent Gareth Simpson over by the posts but there was still time for Walton to intercept for his sixth and Hodgetts to claim his brace courtesy of a driving run from Malachey Forrester. Stags player-coach Perkins commented: “1 was really impressed with the ball movement. Sheffield aren’t an easy side to get over but we really dominated early on and that set us up for a good win. Keeping any side to only one touchdown is a pretty decent effort and all the tries scored gives us a lot to build on.”

Hawks: H Whales; Liam Dryhurst; Joe Barber; Leon Malcolm-Downs; Phil Hedges; Gareth Simpson; Ben Wykman; Matt Clark; Craig Short; Peter bates; joseph bradley; Ben Araud; Simon Lomas: NO SUBS
