Carson kicks Hawks to deserved win
Sheffield recorded their 2nd victory of the
season over a much larger Littleborough side and showed a dedication to
excellent defence and a determination to win. Anyone watching the Hawks
for the first time would not have believed that this was a team who had
registered only one previous win. Having to put up with some serious
initial pressure, the Hawks defence stayed strong and the went into a
comfortable lead, thanks to the excellent kicking of Andy Carson, before
a bizarre try was awarded to Littleborough after a tackle had been
completed but they were allowed to continue playing. The kick from in
front of the posts was missed. Hawks continued to exert pressure
throughout the game with some well positioned kicks and good follow up
play. Littleborough lost their composure and were put under the cosh on
their try line. Littleborough did have a good try disallowed for an
alleged knock-on, which was a form of justice. Andy Carson popped over a
crossbar bouncing drop goal to add insult to injury and Hawks finished
with a convincing win.
The next match is against Siddal and this result should give them
confidence against the league bottom team.

SHEFFIELD HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS 4 SHEFFIELD EAGLES 50 (Jon Bauer
Memorial Trophy)
(The report which was edited
for the League Express!)
It was not until the 6th minute that Hawks managed to get out of their
own half due to intense pressure put on them by the Eagles. To their
credit the Hawks showed great resolve with their defence and Jon Nichols
eventually hoist a kick into the Eagles half for a moments respite.
Eagles were soon on the attack again and a huge 40-20 from Gavin Brown
put the Hawks back on their own try line. Irish international Carl de
Chenu, who had been showing some real pace, dived over in the corner for
the first try which was not converted. The next score came after a
strong run by Andy Rice set up a series of fast passes across the field
for Sean Dickinson to score under the posts and for Gavin Brown to
convert. It took until the 20th minute for the Hawks to be awarded their
first penalty for Eagles persistent laying on. Their 2nd followed
shortly afterwards at the play of the ball and the Hawks decided to run
the ball and Scott North almost scored. Eagles poor handling was letting
the Hawks off of the hook until a break by new signing AJ Veamautua had
Gavin Brown running in to score under the posts, which he also
converted. Craig Brown completed Eagles scoring of the first half.
Half time Hawks 0 Eagles 20
The 2nd half started with the Hawks having to undergo a great deal of
pressure which they contained for 10 minutes until Eagles new hooker
Liam Brentley scored a dubious try close to the posts and the successful
kicking duties were taken over by Sheffield born Aussie John Crawford.
This try was followed shortly after by Crawford scoring and converting
his first for the club. Hawks were not to be denied their moment of
glory and with Eagles persistently making elementary handling errors and
having a poor defence, Jon Nichols got club stalwart Dave Beever to go
in for what turned out o be Hawks' only try. The Eagles kept the
pressure up on the Hawks but Matt Mullholland, Jon Nichols and Simon
Lomas were trying their hardest to get the Hawks into the Eagles half.
The next Eagles attack was started by trialist Chris
Fletcher who put Gav Brown in for his 2nd try under the posts and then
Jon Breakingbury went in for a try on the left wing. The usual local
rivalry showed with about 8 minutes left on the clock with a slight
disagreement as to who had the best after-shave and the RFL development
officer and Super League referee Ashley Klein looked on. Finally Scott
Collins went in for the final try of the match after Rob North had made
another good drive up the centre of the field and Crawford completed the
scoring with his 5th goal. Hawks showed that they will be a team to
watch in National League 3, with a solid defence and a commitment to
attack.
The Jon Bauer Memorial Trophy for Player of
the Match was awarded to Chris Plume of the Hawks.

FINAL SCORE : HAWKS 4 EAGLES 50
SHEFFIELD HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS 12 GREETLAND 40 (Pennine League 3) -
SATURDAY 15th January 2005
On a cold damp day, and a heavy pitch the Hawks defended well at the
start but Greetland, 2nd in the league, increased pressure and eased
ahead. Hawks best try was scored following a good break by Nathan Hall,
on his latest comeback from injury, from half way, who fed Harry Wales
to cross the line. Half time Hawks had a slender lead , which was very
much against the run of play and the defence put in by the Hawks was the
best seen this season. Unfortunately the second half started with a long
range try from Greetland and then there was no way back for the Hawks,.
They never gave up, although some tackling was sloppy, the team had to
put in a tremendous amount of defensive work against a strong Greetland
side, organised by Jamie Fielden, He showed his previous National League
skills to great effect. A scuffle involving most players occurred with
approximately 15 minutes left on the clock, and it was due to the lack
of control of the referee throughout the match and included a Greetland
player kicking out at a Hawks player, but this, along with a large
number of head high tackles throughout the game, was not spotted by the
referee. The Hawks never gave up and continued to try to restrict
Greetland's relentless progress.

Hawks strengthen squad for second half of season
Hillsborough Hawk’s Pennine Div 3 team was given a much needed boost
this week with the signing of four more players. Dave Beever, Nathan
Hall and Daniel Holland all have several years service with the club,
whist newcomer Owen Fisher is tipped for a successful transition from
Rugby Union. Team manager Geoff Archer said “We’re really excited about
signing these guys because all four are powerful and have pace to burn”.
Nathan Hall and Daniel Holland are returning from long-term injury,
whilst NL3 player Dave Beever has offered his playing services to help
out this young side who are finding life difficult in a very physical
division.

The squad has also been strengthened by the return of several key
players. Captain Andy Thompson, Props Benjimin Araud and Scott McLean,
plus Halfback Scott Wallace are all expected to be back in action for
the start of the new year and will be in contention for a place in the
South West Yorkshire Cup final on 8th January at Hillsborough Arena.

Thompson back to lead Hawks revival
Hillsborough Hawk’s Pennine Div 3 side received some festive cheer this
week, with the news that influential captain Andy Thompson will be back
in action for the start of the new-year. Thompson, who is noted for his
tireless work-rate, has been unavailable due to work commitments and was
sorely missed during December when the Hawks suffered three consecutive
away defeats. “It’s been extremely frustrating not being able to play
over the last few weeks, especially when the guys have had it tough”
said Thompson, who has served the club as a player for over a decade.
“I’m really looking forward to my return and hope I can contribute to a
successful 2005”.

Rotherham Roosters 26 Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks 0
Hawks sunk by action Jackson
Hillsborough Hawk’s Pennine Division 3 team had high hopes of a
turnaround in fortunes on Saturday when they travelled to local rivals
Rotherham Roosters, but were unable to contain powerhouse prop Daryl
Jackson and paid the price losing 26 – 0. Jackson, a former professional
with Halifax and Doncaster, ironically also plays for the Hawk’s
National League 3 side and his class was the difference, scoring two
tries and setting up two of the remaining three. However, once again
this young Hawks side impressed with its effort and went close to
scoring through lively backs Simon Anniss and Harry Whales, whilst
another solid game from Brian Moore saw him take the man of the match
award. Hawk’s next game is on 8th January and should see the return of
no fewer than seven regulars to strengthen the squad for what Team
Manager Geoff Archer hopes will be “a more fruitful second half to the
season”.

A solid game from Simon Anniss

11th December 2004 v.Hollingworth
Hollingworth 18 Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks 10
Under strength Hawks suffer narrow loss
A culmination of injury and work commitments
meant Hillsborough Hawks were only able to field a bare 13 players in
their Pennine Div 3 match at Oldham outfit Hollingworth and subsequently
lost 18 – 10. The game started well enough for the Hawks as they
surprised the home side with their enthusiasm and were rewarded with a
try after highly impressive hooker Brian Moore powered his way over for
a try, which was converted by Joe Barber. The Hawks managed to keep
their line intact for nearly half an hour, but the lack of substitutes
meant a tiring forward pack could not be rested and Hollingworth posted
two tries in quick succession, one of which was converted to take the
score to 10 – 6. The final score of the half came from the Hawks after
Brian Moore made the break for Steve Hunter to touch down in clinical
fashion and tie the scores 10 – 10 at half time. The second half
belonged to the home side, but although Hollingworth went on to score
two more tries, the Hawks can be proud of their performance and with a
full compliment, would surely have taken two valuable league points. Man
of the Match went to Tom Coupland for a courageous performance. Final
score Hollingworth 18 Hawks 10.

4th December 2004 v Dearne Valley
Bulldogs
Bulldogs 24 Hawks 16 (Report GK)
Frustration as Hawks Squander half time
lead
Hillsborough Hawk’s open age team were left
kicking themselves as they came away from their Pennine Div 3 game at
Dearne Valley Bulldogs without the points. The Hawks started brightly and
competed physically against an experienced Bulldogs outfit that included
ex St Helen’s player Ian Daintith. Scott Wallace opened the scoring with
a penalty for the Hawks and this was followed by an interception try
from Richard Allen, after a speculative Daintith pass. Wallace converted
the try and continued territorial advantage from the hawks saw him add
two drop goals to his tally. However, the Hawks then lost their
influential captain Scott McLean through injury and the final score of
the half came from an unconverted Bulldogs try, giving a half time score
of 10 – 4 to the Hawks. The first 15 minutes of the second half
saw this game turn on its head and left the Hawks coaching team
mystified as the Bulldogs ran in three unanswered tries, one of which
was converted to swing the scoreline to 18 – 10 in the Bulldogs favour.
The Hawks finally stemmed the tide and after a length of the field break
from debut winger Vince Caldwell saw him halted inches short, Harry
Whales went over from short range to give Wallace an easy conversion and
take the away team to within 2 points. Unfortunately it was the Bulldogs
who scored the next and final points of the game with a converted try to
give a final score of 24 – 16 to Dearne Valley. Man of the Match for the
Hawks was French prop Benjimin Araud with another impressive
performance, but he was run close by young forward Michael Wall’s
tireless effort.

27th November 2004 v. Littleborough -
Lost 30 - 8
Developing Hawks on right track (Report GK)
Hillsborough Hawk’s open age winter team
again came close to taking the spoils during their recent visit to
experienced outfit Littleborough in Pennine league Division 3. The Hawks
made a positive start to the game and twice went close to scoring
through powerful centre Richard Allen. Tough tackling props McLean and
Araud kept Littleborough scoreless until 25 minutes into the match, when
home captain Gary Wragg scored the opening try. Wragg doubled his tally
shortly afterwards, but the Hawks posted the final points of the half
through an unstoppable effort from captain Scott McLean, which was
converted by Glossop to give a half time score of 10 – 6 to
Littleborough. The home team came out for the second half intent on
physically dominating a much younger Hawks outfit and as a result had
three players sent to the sin-bin in quick succession for foul play.
Glossop landed an early penalty, but the damage had been done and the
home team went on to post a further four tries in a disappointing end to
a mainly spirited Hawks display. Final score 30 – 8. Hawks are away to
local rivals Dearne Valley this weekend and are looking to further
develop on the progress gained so far this year.

From cruising to a win Hawks worked hard for this defeat. The first half

6th November 2004: Hawks 25 Hoyland 22
HAWKS PENNINE TEAM TURN CORNER (Report NW)
After a difficult start to the season Hawks
Open Age team look for their third consecutive win this weekend at home
against Birkenshaw in the Andrew Bennett Memorial cup competition. In a
team where the emphasis has been put on the younger players in their
initial season gaining experience at this level they have found the
extra physical power needed for their division at times hard to come to
terms with.
Following on from their first victory against a young Halifax based
Siddal outfit a couple of weeks ago, last weekend saw the home coming of
former Hawks coach Phil Hough and his promotion chasing Hoyland team in
the South West Yorkshire Cup. The teams had met early in the season
where Hoyland had took the spoils. This time the addition of a few
experienced summer NL3 players and the cameo return of first team coach
Jason Davidson to steer the ship saw the Hawks youngsters show their
true capabilities in a close fought game. The game needed to go into
extra time with the scores locked at 18 –18 but the youngsters were not
to be denied and found that bit extra when needed to win 25 – 22.
Pennine Head Coach Gamel Kassim was full of praise for his young
proteges and is certain that with their continued enthusiasm and hard
work more of these results will be obtained.

2nd October
2004:- Hawks (4) 4 Moldgreen (4) 16 (Report NB)
After an intriguing first half, the first
penalty to Hawks was not awarded until the 60th minute. Moldgreen suffer
an injury after 20 odd minutes to a player who got a bruised coccyx (20
minute delay for ambulance) Hawks were at the mercy of lack of
leadership in the forwards and a whistleblower whos’ comment about being
offside was “as long as they are not interfering with play it doesn’t
matter” . He asked for payment at the end because “he wanted to go and
watch a rugby match!” - that was his standard.. Forward passes,
off-side, interference, laying on were not part of his vocab. Hawks did
not help themselves and lost the match easily, with the refs help..
