And now the story in words................

The Hawks put aside the disappointment of their start in NL3 to produce a convincing victory over Mansfield, and send out a warning that they will be a major force this year.
With 20 players to choose from, ranging from Pennine stalwarts, to recent signings and a couple of last years NL3 side, Sheffield looked to approach the match with the same attitude that the Pennine side had ended theirs in. However, straight from the start Hillsborough were guilty of indiscipline, and the first kickable opportunity was taken for Mansfield by Williams. A nervous couple of minutes followed with both sides knocking on in front of their own posts. The Hawks were quickest to recover their composure and Haigh was able to power his way through tackles and over the line after some intelligent approach work created a gap.
5 minutes later, the Hawks had stretched their lead. Intense pressure by the Hillsborough defence forced the errors, and after winning another penalty for a professional foul (surely a yellow card offence???) the Hawks broke quickly, and utilised Malcolm-Downes whose turn of pace left Mansfield for dead and gave Barber an easy sight of goal for the conversion attempt.
This signalled that start of some Mansfield pressure, and it took some fine last gasp tackling to keep the well fed prop forward Wright from flopping over the try line. The pressure was released when Hillsborough capitalised on another Mansfield indiscretion to use their ball handling backs, and a fine offload by Whales gave Malcolm-Downs his second try of the match.
The extra subs meant the Sheffield forwards were able to take frequent rests, and this advantage helped haul the Hawks upfield for another fine attack, with Loose forward Lomas directing traffic and creating openings all over the field. From one of these plays, the Hillsborough roll on caught Mansfield offside, and from the resultant penalty, Short used the 2 dummy runners, and after a moments hesitation, crossed himself for quite possibly his easiest ever try.
Any complacency in the home side was quickly stopped when Mansfield found a gap, and Hardwick punished slack defence to cross for their first try. Unfortunately, he forgot his kicking boots and skewed the effort wide.

The second half began with yet another dubious high tackle called by the referee, who maybe felt a bit sorry for the Mansfield forwards, as 90% of the penalties awarded were blatantly shoulder high. No matter, as Jabbara capped a fine debut by swatting Mansfield aside and touching down under the posts. Barber added another 2 points to the tally. Hawks over eagerness to use gaps saw them come unstuck minutes later, when a wayward pass was desperately flicked backwards in an attempt to keep it alive, only for Mansfield's Thacker to intercept and score.
Barber then made prop Wright red faced by bouncing the kick off straight between his legs and into touch, to ironic cheers from the Hillsborough crowd. The speed of the resulting attacks caught Mansfield offside again, and while they argued the toss, Haigh wandered in almost unchallenged to score his second try.
A bit of a bad tempered collision saw Lomas and Gayle binned for Hawks and Mansfield respectively. Wilson used the extra space and added another four points for the Mansfield cause. Whales replied by launching another attack, and fed debut maker Leon Wright, who left Mansfield for dead and touched down right under the posts.
The last word fell fittingly to Barber, who completed a fine kicking game by finishing off a great passing movement down the right wing, and converting his own try.

It appeared that the referee wanted to signal his intention quickly, so Hawks found themselves penalised for a high tackle within the first 40 seconds. Neither side looked as if they would succumb to the constant pressure until Mick Haigh decided to take on the opposition defence single-handedly on 12 minutes, and crash over for a try, which Bryn Evans converted. Apart from the constant calling of knock-ons by Mr Parker, and the two forward passes there was little to show for the hard effort in the first quarter. Then Dylan Barlow completed a very encouraging shift of the ball through several pairs of hands to go ov
