South Yorkshire Service Area Match Reports2007

May 12th 2007

Calderdale U12’s v South Yorkshire U12's

The under twelve’s travelled to Calderdale looking forward to their first taste of service area rugby and also a game which they had been preparing since service area trials back in January.

South Yorkshire started well, forcing an early error from Calderdale and capitalising with some good running from the forwards and a great set of passing which saw centre Morgan Brindley cross on the right side for the first of his two tries that morning. South Yorkshire had certainly shown their intentions very early on. However, Calderdale, clearly well organised side overcame the initial shock and on the back of some South Yorkshire errors and ill discipline managed to create a lot of pressure and scored a couple of tries.

South Yorkshire had to wait until the second half before crossing the try line again, which saw Morgan Brindley score his second try after, a good pass form Kieran Cross, under pressure, saw him break the line from close range.

South Yorkshire continued to work hard with the forwards making it difficult for Calderdale, which gave man of the match stand off Cory Aston space to make a number of breaks and put the team in good field position. One such attacking set saw, hooker Jack Mitchell sneak through from dummy half at close range to score a great try, which was converted by Aston, the score now 14 – 14.

However, Calderdale managed to pile on the pressure and several errors from South Yorkshire both on attack and in defence saw three further tries and a couple of conversions conceded. South Yorkshire not finished yet attacked the left flank and centre Dominic Campbell managed to complete the scoring with a powerful effort breaking several tackles before crashing over the line.

South Yorkshire gave a good account of themselves and with less errors the result may have been different.

South Yorkshire U15's v Calderdale U15's (@ Hillsborough)

On Sat 12th May South Yorkshire under 15s entertained Calderdale under 15s in the first match of this years Service Area games.

From the kick off it was a very physical and strongly contested match and it was clear that both teams were eager to show there respective strengths. An early try& conversion by South Yorkshire steadied any nerves they may have had & by half time were leading 12 points to 10.

The second half started in the same eager manner, but due to injury’s the home side lost some of its early shape in both defence & attack leading to a final score of 12 points to 24.

As a first game in this years Service Area the squad showed great promise & are looking forward to this week’s away fixture at Kirklees.

South Yorkshire U14’s v Kirklees U14’s.

 @ Moldgreen ARLFC

 Kirklees U14's (30) 60 South Yorkshire U14's  (0) 0

This match was played in varying weather conditions, ranging from hot sunshine to driving rain. The game showed South Yorkshire improving from last week despite a heavy score for the second week, against a Kirklees side fielding many of the Newsome Panthers U14’s unbeaten side in 2007, and including at least one Great Britain junior.

Kirklees started out with the intention of playing hard and fast, and after 8 minutes a score-line of 0-18 was not unreasonable. South Yorkshire woke up at this point, and driving runs from Craig Watson, Kane Feek and Blake Marshland-Gray saw the team lose possession just before the Kirklees try line. Excellent defensive work from Stefan Kazmierski, Connor Smith and Joe Horsey prevented another score on the left, whilst attacking runs from Adam Carr and Adam Parr took play downfield again.

Interchanges for South Yorkshire saw Billy Chappell and Cory Vivian introduced to replace the good work from Dave Chowings and Sean Roberts, the latter of which took a nasty blow to the head. Adam Jones, after excellent work was replaced by Joe Bell, whose ball distribution led to Ashley Dillon and Liam Hughes driving up field, South Yorkshire failed to make the most of a good attacking opportunity.

Kirklees were to score twice more in the first half giving a half time score of 0-30 which probably reflected their experience.

Callum French and Joe Furness impressed in the second half as both tiredness and minor injuries hit the South Yorkshire team. However, they came close to scoring again early on in the second half.

Kirklees were able to repeat their performance of the first half, scoring 30 unanswered points for a final score of 0-60 which somewhat flattered Kirklees. The main telling point was that it was 2 minutes before the end of the game before South Yorkshire completed their first set of 6 tackles, and this and tactical kicking will be the focus of training over the next couple of weeks.

Overall, the South Yorkshire squad showed good spirit when they could so easily have been overrun. They never let their heads go down and carried the play to Kirklees, testing them to the very end of the game. Well done South Yorkshire!
