Hawks (8) 18 Middleton (24) 34 ......15th January 2006

Sheffield's first match in the development league was always going to be tough, with a 3 month break since their last match. The team played well together in the first half with some good defending, and there were tries each for Juliet Harrison and Ann-Marie Whales, scored from limited attacking opportunities. Middleton scored several tries from overlaps, using their fast wingers to full advantage, and Sheffield were 24 - 8 down at half time.

Some strong running in the second half led to tries for Jane Swire and Lorraine Clarke. Jane McGuigan made an excellent debut at second row, and Sheffield's defence and communication improved greatly. But it was not enough, and Middleton won the match at 34 - 18.

Overall Sheffield played well and showed excellent team work to keep going when they were in trouble.

Player's players of the match went to Juilet Harrison, and Hannah Whales, and referee's player went to Lorraine Clarke.

Maths Teacher Sarah Makes The Tries Add Up

Sarah Hewart proves the old saying : "If at first you don't succeed, try, try and try again" really works as Hawks record their first victory of the season as she runs in with 8 tries.

An excellent second half performance saw Sheffield finish this match as convincing winners. With only eight players on each team, there were always going to be opportunities to score tries, and Sheffield demonstrated their good attacking play. There were tries before the break for Fran Small, Sarah Hewart, Lorraine Clarke and Jane Swire, set up by some powerful running from the forward pack. Sheffield built up a narrow lead and were 16-14 in front at half time. The side remained focused and, although Crofton hit back with two more tries, went on to win the match 54-24.

Referees player of the match went to Sarah Hewart for her amazing total of eight tries! And Player's player went to Jane Swire and Sarah Hewart.

The Hawks went into their 2nd meeting with Middleton on a high from winning their first match of their newly established season last weekend. However, it simply wasn't meant to be. Hawks conceding from kick off, regathered their composure and Lorraine Clark went in for a superb try from 10 metres . Unfortunately for Hawks Middleton kept going and with some powerful attacking play sent the ball out to the wings and scored.

After half time Hawks looked like a completely differently team. Improved communication and set plays transformed the team and got them back onto the score sheet with a powerful running display from Sarah Hewart. A timed kick from Fran Small saw Hewart dive over the line and grab a further 2 tries, to add to an impressive 11 try haul in 3 games. The final score ended at 58-18.
All in all, the teams performance was a far greater test from that of the match last week, yet they kept on battling, working together and never let the score get the better of them. The score doesn't reflect the effort and determination presented on the day, in a match that could have gone either way.

There were a lot of dubious referee decisions: missing trippings, and miscounting tackles after incidents etc. but the Hawks still ended up winning.

Try scorers: Marie Burns, Stacey Roulson, Julliet Harrison, Jane Swire, Fran Small :  Goals:: Jane Swire 2.

Sheffield finish season on a high!

With the possibility of the Women's Team folding due to a lack of players, which seems incredible in a city of Sheffield's size, the Hawks put on a fine display to eventually beat their opponents from the other side of the Pennines.

Facing their last game of the season and for some their last match in a Hawks' shirt, today's game was bound to be filled with tension.

Although Rochdale were first on the score sheet, running through the middle of Hawks' defence, Hawk's heads remained high and managed to get 2 points ahead with a try from Marie Burns and a successful conversion from Jane Swire.

Lapses in concentration gifted Rochdale some easy tries after this but somehow Hawks maintained the lead.

Hawks responded quickly after half time and established a lead that would win them the game. Confusion on Rochdale's part lead to a short break from Fran Small and ended with a skilful try off Hannah Whales. Hawks' last try of the game came off Natalie Daniels from an intercepted pass in her own half.

My G..... It's a B.. long way to run

A fantastic final team effort to bow out to after a stop and start season.
