Townville Tigers U10’s (4)16  Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks U10’s (24)32
(Match Report - Marie Burns)

On what was a cold wet and miserable day the Hawks provided the sun by an excellent team performance.

The first half got off to a good start when Joe Ashworth scored for the Hawks within a few minutes.  This was made possible by the strong drives Joe Duckworth, Ben Posthlewaite and Jake Griffin and the grubber kick that Paddy Burns provided.  Burns converting the kick.

It wasn’t long before the Hawks were in possession again.  Will Griffiths  and Bradley Davy drove the ball hard into the opposition.  Paddy Burns seized the opportunity to run the ball three quarters of the pitch to score.  Nathan Brown provided the support Burns may have needed.

At the restart the Hawks’ fierce defence lead to Townville losing the ball.  Again Davy drove the ball up field followed by another strong run by Griffin.   The team work between Ashworth and Burns led to Burns scoring his second try.  Ashworth quickly added another two points to the score board as he kick the conversion.

The Hawks relaxed a little,  the opposition grabbed the chance and scored.

When play resumed Davy and Griffin ran hard and made ground.  Postlewaite lined up next and as he ran he dragged a number of the Townville players with him.  Unfortunately as the ball was played and due to the wet conditions the ball was fumbled and it was a turn over to the opposition.  Hawks allowed  Townville back into the game and they were soon defending on their line.   Griffiths and Duckworth were in no mood to let a try in and forced Townville into spilling the ball.  Griffin scooped up the ball with ease and as he ran was brought down by the opposition.  Max Braithwaite powered up field was tackled by several Townville players.

At the next play of the ball Hawks lost possession.  Unfortunately for Townville the Hawks cracked their attack with strong tackling preventing them from completing their set of six.

Once in possession the big guns in the form of Postlewaite, Davy and Griffin pushed the ball up the field which provided Ashworth with a good field position to kick across to the right hand corner.  Davy reading the direction of the kick was able to touch down to score.

Hawks men George Johnson and Ashworth piled the pressure on as Townville restarted the game.  This proved too much for the opposition and soon they lost the ball.   The forwards drove the ball up field once more. Tom Spencer safely delivered the ball into Ashworth hands who stepped the opposition several times to score the final try of the first half.  The Score at half time was Townville 4 : Hawks 24.

The bitter wind continued to blow across the open field and the Hawks were starting to show signs of turning into icicles.  This was reflected when Townville quickly ran in their second try within moments of starting the second half.  As Hawks restarted the game they soon came under attack from the fired up Townville defence.  Both  N. Brown and Burns were soon escorted from the pitch through injury.

Hawks were soon defending again but with much more conviction than at the start of the second half.  Townville were forced into making a forward pass as the Hawks’ player Luke Brown turned the screw on their attack.  The weather started to cause more problems for both sides as the ball became slippery and fingers began to freeze.  The Hawks again lost possession but the opposition failed to make use of this as George Johnson forced Townville into handling errors.  Johnson was able to scoop up the ball and drive into opposition territory.  After another pass from play of the ball by Spencer, Burns was able to start the Hawks score for the second half.

Townville replied almost immediately as Hawks’ defence failed. The Hawks came out attacking strongly,  looping and causing Townville confusion.  As Griffiths drove over the line the opposition gave a penalty away due to a high tackle.  Burns saw the opportunity to muscle his way through the Townville defence to score the final Hawks try.

Townville came back strong and ran the ball dangerously close to the Hawks line.  Although the Hawks valiantly defended Townville found a chink of light in their line scoring the final try of the match.  Final score Townville 16 : Hawks 32.

Hawks: Joe Ashworth, Max Braithwaite, Luke Brown, Nathan Brown, Patrick Burns, Bradley Davy, Joe Duckworth, Jake Griffin, Will Griffiths, George Johnson, Ben Postlewaite, Tom Spencer.

Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks U 10s (10) 14 Guiseley (16) 34
(Report Marie Burns)
See match gallery HERE

After the  last encounter with Guiseley the Hawks needed to demonstrate that they were a force to be reckoned with.  Within minutes after a swift pass from Will Griffiths, Paddy Burns scored the first try of the match.  Guiseley brought the ball back into the Hawks' territory but defensive work by Joe Duckworth, Bradley Davy and Tom Spencer kept them away from the try line.  As Guiseley kicked for the fifth and last Jake Griffin Scooped the ball up running it back towards the opposition's half.  Max Braithwaite drove the ball hard at Guiseley.  As the Hawks attempted to move up field they were thwarted by the strong Guiseley defence.  On the kick  Duckworth chased and brought a Guiseley player down cleanly.  Nathan Brown showed the opposition good use of his shoulder as he tackled.  Unfortunately Guiseley answered this by showing the Hawks' defence how to use a "dummy" to score a try, with a successful conversion Guiseley were back in the game.

Hawks continued to bring the game to Guiseley.  Runs by Davy, Griffiths and Braithwaite moved them up the field.  After the Hawks' kick  Guiseley were able to slip through a broken Hawks defensive line and score again.  Burns was not going to take this lying down and after the restart he wove through the opposition only to be brought down close to the line.  George Johnson fed the ball out quickly to Griffin, who used his strength and power to ground the ball in Guiseley's goal area.  Burns converting putting the ball cleanly though the middle of the sticks.  Hawks' concentration failed them and Guiseley were able to run virtually unopposed to score their third try just before half time.

Half time Score Hawks (10) Guiseley (16).

Second half saw the Hawks putting in strong runs placing them with 10 metres of Guiseley's line.  Burns put a kick in on the fifth tackle and N. Brown came with inches of scoring.  As Guiseley gained control of the ball they moved once again towards Hawks territory.  The opposition's kick was skillfully picked up by Luke Brown but Guiseley saw the opportunity to put the Hawks player into touch.  The Hawks were determined to regain the ball and put pressure on Guiseley at the scrum forcing them to knock on.  Hawks once again could not keep possession long as the opposition used the side line to regain the ball.

Duckworth worked hard to stop Guiseley from gaining too much ground.  N. Brown followed his team mate's example putting in a try saving tackle within inches of the line.  The Hawks fought back with excellent off loads by Johnson to Burns.  Yards were made by Griffin as he tried to power through Guiseley's line.  L. Brown followed suit trying to gain a better field position.  A kick across field caught a Hawks player off side and Guiseley were awarded a penalty.  Guiseley seized the opportunity and broke the Hawks defence scoring.
At the restart Hawks tried to answer back but on the turnover of the ball the opposition scored again.  Still the Hawks did not give up and took the game back to Guiseley.  With moments to go N. Brown was able to score the final points of the game.

Full Time Score: Hawks 14  Guiseley 34

It was a cold, wet and miserable start for the Hawks with Brighouse scoring 10 points within minutes of kick off.  Hawks were determined to gain some points and stepped up their game with powerful drives from Bradley Davy, Jake Griffin and Will Griffiths gaining valuable ground towards the try line.  They were working well as a team under the leadership skills from their captain Patrick Burns with precise passing from George Johnson, Luke Brown and Tom Spencer enabling Burns to score his first try which he successfully converted.  The pressure was growing for Brighouse with a solid defense line from the Hawks they just couldn’t break through the strong tackles from Max Braithwaite and Joe Duckworth keeping them away from the try line.  The ball was back with the Hawks a strong run from Nathan Brown took the ball up the pitch and it was back with Burns who scored his second try of the game, N Brown kicked the conversion.  With minutes to go to half time Burns scored his third try.

 Half time score: 16-10

Brighouse were weakening and were losing their line of defense with the pressure from the Hawks.  Hawks were not making this an easy game for them.  Johnson was quick off the mark with his powerful run attacking and breaking the Brighouse line into pieces.   Brighouse were determined to gain some points and their hard work paid off as they were rewarded with a try, which they successfully converted.  With excellent passes from Spencer, Duckworth and Griffiths, Burns took the ball over the try line for the fourth time.  The strong attacking runs from Davy, Griffin, L Brown and Braithwaite put more pressure on Brighouse with Hawks getting further up the pitch than Brighouse would have liked.  It was the 5th tackle and Burns kicked the ball precisely in the corner for N Brown to score the try.  Brighouse soon replied with a further try and conversion.  The Hawks were working as a team and passing the ball down the line into the hands of Burns who went on to score his 6th and final try of the game.  Full time score: 32-22

The Hawks played away to Keighley on a very wet muddy pitch and were having trouble standing up on it never mind trying to play a rugby match!  Within minutes Keighley had scored their first try and successfully converted. Hawks were not giving up and we saw some excellent tackles from Max Braitwaite, Will Griffiths, Bradley Davy, Jake Griffin and Joe Ashworth.  Hawks tried really hard in their attack but they just couldn’t make it to the try line. 16-0

The pitch condition was getting worse and it was getting difficult to tell the players apart because they were covered in so much mud, one of Keighley’s players got their foot stuck in the mud and it took 2 adults to pull it out!  Hawks positive attitude and the determination from George Johnson to break through Keithley’s defence paid off and he scored Hawks an excellent first try of the game, converted by Ashworth.  It was becoming difficult to stop the attack from Keighley they were just slipping out of the Hawks player’s hands and they scored another try.  We saw some good strong runs from Ben Postlethwaite, Joe Duckworth, Nathan Brown and with excellent passing skills from Martin Brooks and Luke Brown Davy went on  to score a try, converted by Griffin. 32-12

All players played with 100% determination and effort but due to the very poor playing conditions they couldn’t get the points they deserved.  Well done Hawks for not giving up and holding your heads high.

This match should have been cancelled due to the very bad condition of the pitch and there was no hot water available for the players who were covered head to toe in thick wet mud!

Hawks were away to Guiseley and were eager to put in a good performance against our strongest opposition on this sunny but very windy day.  Guiseley won the toss choosing the advantage to play up hill in the first half, the ball was kicked in touch and it was a turn over to the Hawks.  The Hawks started well with strong attacking runs from Will Griffiths, Joe Duckworth, Jake Griffin and Bradley Davy.  The ball was back with Guiseley and Hawks worked well as a team to build a strong wall of defense to keep them a way from the try line with excellent tackles from Tom Spencer, George Johnson and Joe Ashworth finishing it off taking Guiseley in touch.  The ball was in the hands of Duckworth who ran 40 yards of the pitch dodging their players, he could see their defense blocking the try line but with his quick tactical and unselfish thinking his passing was timed to perfection into the hands of Nathan Brown to score the Hawks first try of the match.    Half time score 4-12.

Hawks were eager to gain some more points and with excellent passing skills from George Johnson, Max Braithwaite and Luke Brown valuable ground was made towards the try line.  The ball was back with Davy who charged his way through Guiseley’s defense passing the ball to Ashworth who scored his first try of the match, converted by N. Brown.  Hawks defense was strong, Guiseley kicked on the 5th tackle straight into the hands of Spencer who caught the ball with ease.  The gap was closing and with hard work and determination from all players towards the try line, Ashworth glided through the air to score his second try.

This took the Hawks in the lead but with only 10 players and no substitutes it was hard work for the Hawks attacking up hill, they were tiring and defending the attack from Guiseley was getting harder.  Guiseley with the advantage of fresh legs on the pitch went on to score two further tries.  Final score 14-24

U10s match was abandoned yesterday due to the abuse from the Townvilles coach and players,

U10s were at their home ground starting well with a strong defence from Will Griffiths, Patrick Burns, Jake Griffin, George Johnson and Joe Ashworth keeping Townville away from the try line.  The ball was back with the Hawks, after some excellent ball passing skills from Luke Brown, Martin Brooks, Thomas Day and Max Braithwaite into the hands of Bradley Davy who powered his way through Townvilles defence to score the first try of the match, converted by Ashworth.

Townville soon followed with a try and successfully converted.  Hawks were determined and we saw some of our strongest runs of the season from Tom Spencer, Joe Duckworth, Nathan Brown and the most powerful drive of the season from Ben Postlethwaite through the Townville players, some of them attached to him taking the ball closer to the try line.  After a tactical set up and quick hands from Johnson he was through the smallest gap in their defense and was over the line to get the Hawks second try of the game, converted by Burns.

Townville were eager for more points and they were rewarded with a try and conversion.  The game was stepping up and Hawks wanted more points before half time, it wasn't long before Burns broke their defence and was over the line to score his try.  Half Time Score: Hawks 16  Townville 12
