West Riding Challenge Cup

The team played incredibly well today given that they have only been together for 3 weeks, and for many of them this was their first ever match. A first outing for the new under 12 team saw 12 players against 14,
The boys started off with great enthusiasm which stayed with them for the full 40 minutes.
They were disappointed to not score any tries but they must realise that against The All Blacks, who have played together for 3 years and who are in the Premier League, they had an unlucky draw in the Cup.
The boys played with 1 man down but they all played to the best of their abilities and did not give up. In the second half they improved greatly even though they had the disadvantage of playing up hill.
New Hawks players Edward and Darius showed great determination and team awareness and the more experienced team members Jack, Gareth, William, Jordan, Ronan, Carl and Kieran played solidly in their positions with Gareth recovering quickly from a nasty tackle.
James, Matthew and Charlie also played well in their first match, Matthew tackling strongly at the end of the match to save a late try. All of the boys should be proud of their achievements today, they have learnt a lot from their first match experience and can only move onwards and upwards.
Thankyou for playing today, and thank you to all of the supporters for being there too.
Hawks team: WRAGG Edward; LINEKAR Kieran; GREGORY Carl; WRAGG Matthew; BOYCE Ronan; FRENCH James; DAVY Jack; SMITH-BRIGGS Jordan; WILSON Darius; ROBERTSON William; THORPE Charlie; GRAYSON Gareth.

Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks (0) 0 Moldgreen (44) 68
League Match
Weather fine and sunny, no wind.
Game played in a good spirit.
Hillsborough Hawks started with a disadvantage of just 11 players.
The boys started off a little slowly and found it hard to gain possession against a good kicking side in Moldgreen. The first half saw Moldgreen’s number 15 show great pace and agility. As the first 25 minutes came to an end the boys still had their heads held high and began tackling and talking as a team.
0-44 at half time
The second half showed how quickly this group of boys are learning to play Rugby League as a team. Tackles were impressive and double in number as compared to the first half.
Runs were even more impressive, with 30 in the second half, as compared to 7 in the first half.
The boys were unlucky not to score a try out of their efforts in the second half ; and made good ground and a couple of sets of 6 ending in a kick.
There was some valiant defence with magnificent team effort to ‘hold up’ two certain tries and keep Moldgreen out of the ‘in goal area’.
The boys should be proud of their efforts and improvements over a short period of time. The parents and supporters could see their effort and determination.
Tries will come!

The Under 12’s worked really hard and showed a great sense of wanting to win, or enjoy themselves as much as possible, whichever happened. They did not deserve to have so many points shipped past them, The score does not really tell the story of the game. It was the first time I had seen them play and they have a great deal of potential.... Ed
Weather damp but no wind. Only 10 players today, but Slaithwaite dropped down to 10 for us and had 2 subs. Game played in a good spirit. The boys continue to improve in all areas.
An unlucky ‘knock on’ decision gave Slaithwaite an early advantage in front of Hawks in-goal area from which they scored. Then followed several good sets of six, with improved attacking drives and defensive tackling. At the end of the first half Slaithwaite were 22-0 up. The second half saw the Hawks keep up their good efforts. There was some good catching from the start of play from Matthew and Edward, and James got close to scoring after a fantastic 50 yard run.
The final play saw Angus make a spectacular diving tackle to prevent a further Slaithwaite try.
Tackle and run counts continue to improve.
Just 10 players in this new Hawks side today, all played to the best of their abilities. All of the team show marked improvement on their previous performances, though no tries yet! Good tackles and drives by Jack Davy, Matthew Wragg and Charlie Thorpe. Great run to almost score by James French. Better luck next week.
Hawks: Gareth GRAYSON, Edward WRAGG, Angus MACARTHUR, Joel HIRST, James FRENCH, William ROBERTSON (Capt), Jack DAVY, Matthew WRAGG, Jordan SMITH-BRIGGS, Charlie THORPE,

Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks U12’s (0) 0 Townville Tigers U12’s (38) 70
Weather fine and sunny, no wind.
Only 9 players today due to illness; Townville brought a strong side of 14 players.
Townville kicked off first, Hawks lost possession, which led to a try and conversion by the opposition. Unfortunately we kicked back to them for the rest of the first half, tries followed.
The Hawks played well given their disadvantage in numbers; all of the boys held their heads up and kept attacking.
James again came close to scoring our first try, well run James. Charlie and Matthew both got injured but went back on the field to the applause of their teammates. Kieran and Jack made some excellent runs, tackling strongly as usual. Jordan made a good run in the first half which set up a strong set of six. Joel made a strong diving tackle to stop one of their wingers from scoring. Edward made strong tackles this week, showing great determination and courage. Will kicked well causing Townville to knock on which showed good pressure from the Hawks.
Hawks: Jack DAVY, James FRENCH, Joel HIRST, Kieran LINEKAR, William ROBERTSON, Jordan SMITH-BRIGGS, Charlie THORPE, Edward WRAGG, Matthew WRAGG.
Well done to all of the boys this week, Stuart will give Man of the Match certificates to 2 players on Tuesday.

Hillsborough Hawks U12’s (0) 4 Huddersfield Sharks U12’s (42) 78
Weather very sunny, no wind but cold. We played with just 9 men due to holidays, Huddersfield dropped down to 11 with 2 subs. The game was played in great spirit.
The boys made a few silly errors in the first half letting Huddersfield make some easy tries.
This week saw improved play from many of the players, great tackles and runs from all of the boys.
The first half ended 0 42.
The second half saw us determined to get a score on the books, we made several sets of six resulting in good pressure. Huddersfield conceded valuable penalties, which we took advantage of to result in our first try of the season from Charlie Thorpe, assisted by a great pass from Gareth Grayson. A huge celebratory cheer from the supporters was heard over the other side of town!
Credit to all of the boys for turning up every week and showing such good sportsmanship.
We can also celebrate the first home player to win the raffle. Kieran Adler carried the water for the boys as his registration has not come through yet; he also carried home the fireworks generously donated by the Grayson family.
Hawks: DAVY Jack; GRAYSON Gareth; LINAKER Kieran; McARTHUR Angus; ROBERTSON William; SMITH-BRIGGS Jordan; THORPE Charlie; WRAGG Edward; WRAGG Matthew.

Huddersfield Sharks (28) 54 Hillsborough Hawks (0) 0
Weather bright and cold, ground soft, sloping pitch.
Game played in good spirit. Huddersfield played with full team plus subs, Hawks played with 11.
First half disadvantage playing uphill into the wind. Home team used their knowledge of the pitch to good effect from first kick onwards.
Hawks played as a better more solid unit and only conceded tries when the Sharks used their 2 man overlap on the wings. No mistakes from Hawks in first half.
After a minutes silence we should have benefited from the advantage of the hill and the wind. However, the second half seemed rather short!
We gave away a chance of a score early on from a penalty, which seemed to dispirit the boys.
The Sharks used some very good set plays in the second half to good effect, which illustrated their experience. A knock on by the Sharks close to their own in goal line was missed, denying Hawks the chance of scoring.
Kieran Attwell made his debut. He made great runs and fitted into the team seamlessly. Edward Wragg made fantastic tackles today. Both boys will receive Man of the Match awards on Tuesday.
Hawks: LINAKER Kieran (capt); ATTWELL Kieran; DAVY Jack; FRENCH James; GRAYSON Gareth; HIRST Joel; McARTHUR Angus; ROBERTSON William; THORPE Charlie; WRAGG Edward; WRAGG Matthew.
Well done again to all of the boys for playing, and thank you to all of the parents for their continued support and encouragement.

Hillsborough Hawks U12’s (4) 10 Moorends U12’s (16) 38
Hawks played with 12 this week, including three new players to the team. A very enjoyable match to watch in very cold, wet weather. Moorends started well scoring a couple of tries by using the width of the pitch. Hawks defended very well as a team by their own in goal line stopping several further try attempts. Hawks made several good powerful runs. After a good set of 5 tackles Hawks were 15 yds from the try line and instead of kicking on the last possession a fantastic off load from Charlie Thorpe to Kieran Attwell gave Kieran the chance to run and score on his home debut. A huge cheer went up from the Hawks supporters.
Second half saw Moorends score again from good fluid work along their lines. Hawks put in a lot of strong and effective tackles, all of the players made their mark today with their determination; there was little to choose between them. A second try came from Charlie Thorpe with a good strong run through their defenders. New player Jake Johnson confidently converted for extra valuable points.
Hawks: ATTWELL Kieran; DARGAN Jack; DAVY Jack; FRENCH James; GRAYSON Gareth; JOHNSON Jake; LINAKER Kieran(capt); O’REILLY Joe; SMITH-BRIGGS Jordan; THORPE Charlie; WRAGG Edward; WRAGG Matthew.
Scorers: Tries: Attwell, Thorpe. Goal: Johnson.
Match Notes: Weather cold and wet. Game played in good spirit. Both teams played with 12, no subs. New Hawks players today Joe O’Reilly, Jake Johnson and Jack Dargan.
Improved defence from the Hawks prevented more quick tries, all players contributing with team defence by the try line. Great runs from Kieran L, Kieran A, Charlie and Matthew. Strong and effective tackles from Edward, Jack Dargan, Jake, Jack Davy, Gareth and James. Good support from Jordan and Joe. All of the players deserve credit particularly those for whom it was their first match.
A try in the first half from Kieran A demonstrated how the team are beginning to work together and anticipate the run of play. Well done Kieran.
The second half saw even more great tackling, huge determination and spirit from the Hawks. A second try by Charlie, and the conversion by Jake shows how the team is moving forward. Well done Charlie and Jake.

Supplementary Cup
Hillsborough Hawks U12's (0) 0 Halifax Irish U12'S (28) 58
Played with a full team this week for the first time, no subs. Hawks were at a disadvantage however in this cup match, playing a team in a higher division. The boys played very well in the first half, much improved generally in all aspects of the game. A number of decisions against them led to no tries being scored by Hawks this week. Eventually towards the end of the second half heads dropped with frustration, a feeling echoed in the spectators and the coach. Well done boys for playing so competitively against a more experienced side.
Weather cold but dry and sunny. Pitch good.
Some unlucky decisions meant that they could not capitalise on the chances they made.
All of the boys deserve credit this week for sticking it out to the end even though many of them were injured in the last 10 minutes or so of the match.
Hawks: ATTWELL Kieran; DARGAN Jack; DAVY Jack; FRENCH James; GRAYSON Gareth; HIRST Joel; JOHNSON Jake; McARTHUR Angus; O’REILLY Joe; SMITH-BRIGGS Jordan; THORPE Charlie (capt); WRAGG Edward; WRAGG Matthew.

Weather very wet, cold but bright. Pitch very poor, very slippy, big puddles.
We played with a full team plus 1 sub today for the first time. Well done to everyone, parents included, who turned out today.
We welcome a new player, Macauley Evans, who played in his first match today. Macauley played very well, full of enthusiasm and was keen to get the ball. He fitted into the team seamlessly, well done to Macauley.
Good play by the rest of the team, many mouthfuls of muddy water and grass were consumed in tackling. Matthew Wragg went home with one tooth less than he woke up with in the morning, that must be worth at least a fiver!
Again some unfortunate decisions meant that the boys could not capitalise on some of their chances. The tackling remains very strong, especially from Kieran Attwell and Jack Davy today, both of whom will receive Man of the Match certificates on Tuesday.
We know which areas we have to work on with the boys to help them receive the results that they deserve. Stuart has plans to do some classroom work with the boys to help them become more match aware and to go over some areas of play where we could build on the work that the boys are already putting in to the games.
Credit to the team for running off the pitch at the end of the match with smiles on their faces.
Well done to everyone for playing today in the revolting weather.
Hawks: ATTWELL Kieran; DARGAN Jack; DAVY Jack; EVANS Macauley; FRENCH James; GRAYSON Gareth; HIRST Joel; LINAKER Kieran (capt); O’REILLY Joe; ROBERTSON William; SMITH-BRIGGS Jordan; THORPE Charlie; WRAGG Edward; WRAGG Matthew.

Weather dry, cold but bright. Pitch good.
We played with a full team plus 2 subs today. Well done to everyone, parents included, who turned out today.
We welcome a new player, Sam Ross, who played in his first match today. Sam had a very good first match, making a lot of very strong runs, well done Sam.
Good play by the whole team today especially as our last match was 5 weeks ago and instead of training we have had an excess of chocolate, well I have anyway!
As well as good runs from Sam, both Kierans made strong attacking runs, Kieran Attwell almost scored 3 times, so close to the try line each time that we all thought a try would come. The whole performance showed that even if we are not scoring we are making chances which are an improvement, well done to all of the team.
We need to improve our defensive play; the tackle count shows that our attack this week was much stronger than defence. Having said this the boys were making some good plays along the line, playing more as a team now. We know which areas we have to work on with the boys to help them receive the results that they deserve.
Newsome chose Kieran Attwell as Man of the Match this week, the new trophy was awarded after the match. Well done Kieran.
Hawks played with 15 this week. We played with a new team member, Sam Ross, who played extremely well. He made lots of strong runs and fits into the team seamlessly. All of the boys showed their usual level of commitment, technically they are improving match by match.

L to R front row: Gabriel Fetches, Jack Davy, Joel Hirst, Gareth Grayson, Edward Wragg, James French, Jack Dargan, Sam Ross.
Coach Scott Wallace.
Weather bright but freezing cold and windy, pitch good.
The match was played in good spirit.
Hawks played with 17 today including 4 new players, Philip Howsden, Gabriel Fetches, Ben Stenton and Jake Weatherall.
The first half started well with a cracking run finishing in a try from Philip, converted by William Robertson to put us in the lead for the first time ever! This was followed by a try at the other end which Moorends also converted.
A neat piece of play came from a strong run by Charlie Thorpe who off loaded to Gabriel on the wing, he then cut back inside to off load to Kieran Attwell who ended up a metre short of their try line. Gareth Grayson, one of our very committed players in the team from the beginning, then lunged over the line using his size to full advantage to get between the forest of legs trying to keep the Hawks behind the try line. Fantastic work Gareth.
This was the Hawks playing as a strong team working together.
The second half saw us trailing by 2 points, but not for long as a very determined Kieran Linaker took full advantage of a penalty to score. Great passing between both Kierans resulted in us being in the lead again.
A spectacular hat trick by Kieran Attwell made it clear that we were going to win, but all of the boys kept working hard till the final whistle to make sure the team got the score line they deserved.
All of the boys deserve a mention for their part in todays tremendous win.
Fantastic tackling from Edward Wragg, Sam Ross, Joel Hirst and Ben Stenton.
Good support from Jack Dargan and Jake Weatherall.
Great strong runs from Jack Davy, Matthew Wragg, James French, and Macauley Evans.
Man of the match trophy awarded to Philip for his all round solid performance in his first match.
Man of the match certificate to be awarded to Gabriel on Tuesday for fantastic, confident tackling on the wing.
Well done to all of the boys, you deserve this win for the massive amount of hard work you have put in this season.

Hillsborough Hawks (0) 0 Moldgreen (40) 80
Weather fine and sunny, no wind, pitch muddy but dry.
Game played in good spirit.
We played with a full team plus two subs today. Moldgreen played with 12 players.
The Hawks started off slowly, finding it difficult to gain possession against an experienced side that demonstrated good kicking and tackling techniques. Several Moldgreen players showed agility and speed on the running breaks.
The first half saw some impressive runs from both Kieran’s, Philip Howsden and Ben Stenton on his home debut. Well done Ben.
Jack Davy and William Robertson delivered some firm tackles. Good kicking and passing from Jordan Smith-Briggs enabled Ben to undertake several strong runs in both halves.
The first half finished at 0 / 40.
Some fantastic tackles from Matthew Wragg, Philip Howsden and Kieran Linaker in the second half prevented Moldgreen from increasing their lead.
We need to improve our defensive play; the tackle count shows that our attack this week was much stronger than defence. Having said this, the boys were making some good plays along the line and are playing more as a team. They showed that they were able to make some good passes when the opportunity arose.
We know which areas we have to work on with the boys to help them receive the results that they deserve. Credit is due to all of the boys for showing true sportsmanship, commitment and continued determination throughout the game.

Newsome Panthers (22) 38 Hillsborough Hawks: (0) 12
Full team plus 5 subs today, at a very wet and cold hilltop at Newsome. The Panthers’ 1st try caught us on the hop, unfortunately it was quickly followed by their 2nd and 3rd! Good passing play today from the boys. Special mention needs to be made about Joel who received the ball and passed along the line so well every time, great work Joel. Strong tackling from everyone, especially from Kieran A, Charlie, Matt, Ed, Macauley, Jordan, Jack Davy, and Gabriel. Tries in the second half from Philip and Kieran A, both from impressive runs, and confident conversions from Joel and new player Tom lifted everyone’s spirits; the rain even stopped! Good all round team support from James, Gareth, Jake, Jack Dargan, Will, Sam and Kieran L. The bonus of being able to take 18 players is complicated by having 5 boys on the touchline, which is hard. Well done to everyone who came off of the pitch today, you all stayed focused on the match and supported the team.
Well done to everyone.
Hawks: French; Fetches; Ross; Wragg E; Thorpe; Hirst; Attwell; Grayson; Linaker; Davy; Robertson; Howsden; Smith-Briggs; Evans; Dargan; Weatherall; Wragg M; Dickinson.

Newsome Panthers (20) 40 Hillsborough Hawks (4) 4
15 March 2008
A freezing cold day, set on a hilltop pitch at Newsome. Weather was bright but very windy. Pitch sloping and muddy. The match was played in good spirit.
Hawks had one sub today, Newsome played with two. The first half saw Newsome take advantage of the pitch and blistery conditions that they are obviously familiar with. Hawks struggled to keep up the pace. Newsome placed the first try. The Hawks quickly added a brilliant try of their own by Phil Howsden who caught a fantastic kick from Tom Dickinson to enable him to rocket the ball over the try line. Well done to Phil and Tom.
The boys attempted several runs and they tried very hard to make their passes count today, although the wind had other ideas and often blew the ball in the opposite direction causing several miss directed passes. Newsome had a solid defence and despite many of the players attempting to break that defence and push for further tries, it was to no avail.
Man of the match to be confirmed.
