AUGUST 2007

SELECTION FOR LOCAL LADS: Three  South Yorkshire Rugby League players have made significant steps up the Rugby League Performance pathway / ladder by being selected in the 2007 Yorkshire Regional Under 14’s and 15’s Camps. Corey Hanson from Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks (Under 15’s),  Sean Richards from Doncaster Toll Bar (Under 15’s ) and Joe Furness from Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks (Under 14’s)  recently made the difficult  transition of progressing from their amateur club sides onto the South Yorkshire Service Area side. After playing 5 games for the service area all three players came through the Rugby Football Leagues Performance Department’s rigorous talent identification system and were selected onto the 2007 Yorkshire Regional camp which involves the 40 most  elite players from the county at each  age group. The selection of these players highlights the hard work and commitment that all players have put into their training and preparation and the outstanding work that is being done by the Doncaster Toll Bar and Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks Amateur Rugby League clubs along with the South Yorkshire service Area.

Hawks get to another International (See Photos -HERE)

Hillsborough Hawks U10's have been selected to to play against Cottingham Tigers in the pre-match International entertainment at the KC Stadium on Saturday 3rd November when Great Britain take on New Zealand in the 2nd Gillette Fusion Test.

The teams will then prior to the big kick off make their way to the pitch to wave the national flags.

Jean Ashworth, U10's manager said: " This a tremendous honour for the squad and something they will remember for the rest of their lives. They have just started playing league games, having won their last two encounters and to play at the KC will be one of the pinnacles of their playing careers. Perhaps it may motivate them to go on to have Super League and International careers of their own."
Walton Warriors will also play Heworth in the other match

Footnote: The Hawks Under 8's were part of the presentation for the GB v NZ tri-nations at the Galpharm in 2005

Simon Town of the Hawks Under 16's Squad and Penistone Grammar School, was crushed under a skip lorry in Penistone on Monday 7th January on his way home from school.

He has horrendous injuries ............ 2 broken legs which he has had to have pinned and he is in Barnsley Hospital.
    He was told that he was also lucky not to have worse injuries as he was fit from rugby and it could have been far worse.

Headlines in the Barnsley Chronicle
Teens "lucky to be alive " in crash debris

Two teenagers are lucky to be alive after being crushed by a lorry that overturned and fell into a garden when it hit a low bridge ...

A 13 yr old lass (Ellie Heaton from Kingstone School) was the other badly injured student.{Serious abdominal and leg injuries - she has been transferred to Sheffield Children's Hospital}

Simon crawled out from under the lorry phoned 999 for help for the lass (thinking of others first.......... who was pushed through a dry stone wall, (as he mum says "he didn't realise how badly he was hurt, he just wanted to help the girl"), leaving her trapped for two hours.

A very brave and considerate lad.
              Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks ARLFC obviously wish both a very speedy and successful recovery.

You can wish Simon a speedy recovery by sending a message if you click HERE. It is the Hillsborough Hawks Forum.
