Tony Smith & Jason Davidson passed on professional advice at a Hawks coaching session 16th December 2006.

Tony Smith kindly accepted an invitation from the Hawks to take a Saturday morning training session with his assistant, Jason Davidson, returning to the Hillsborough ground where he used to lead the National League 3 Open Age team. The boys, all members of the Hillsborough Hawks U15’s squad, were treated to a taste of some SUPER LEAGUE coaching from one of the top men in the world of rugby. Tony also set aside time to talk to Hawks coaches Richard Haycox and Richard Brook passing-on key tips to improve the team’s performance.

The December session was followed-up by Sheffield’s own Mark Aston leading a session for a group of 28 Hawks players (U14’s & U15’s) on the first Saturday of the New Year. The Eagle’s boss expertly took the youngsters through their paces linking his tackling technique drills into Tony’s previous training. The youth squads get a real lift from seeing these top Coaches and how typical of rugby league to have the most respected men in their profession giving their time and skills just to encourage the lads to progress on the rugby field.

27th December 2006

The youngsters took to the pitch for a full contact ten minute game during the half time break in the Lakers v Eagles friendly.

Hawks only had seven players available so some of the Tollbar squad donned a Hawks' shirt to even-up the numbers.

Hawks defended well with some great tackling from Ashworth, Beatson and Whitworth. In attack Brooks and Davy made good ground and Calverly's passing was excellent. Hawks scored the first try with a fine run from Burns but Tollbar drew level in the final minute to leave honours even at one try apiece. A superb display of rugby from both teams; it looks like the future of Rugby League in South Yorkshire is in very safe hands.

HAWKS WITHDRAW FROM NATIONAL THREE

Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks have confirmed that they intend to concentrate on fostering junior talent at the club and, as a result, are concentrating their resources on their Rugby League Conference side rather than also maintaining their presence in National League Three. The loss of key personnel, head coach Jason Davidson who moved as conditioner to Leeds Rhinos and manager Neil Worton has meant a re-appraisal of the club’s operations after failing to field a squad of sufficient experience and standard for their last two National 3 fixtures. Long serving Hawks Chairman Ian Anniss commented, “As founder members of National League Three we do not take our involvement in this League lightly and are extremely unhappy and frustrated about the situation we now find ourselves in. At the end of last season and well into the close season there was no indication that there were any problems but we have now come to the clear understanding that we have lost virtually the whole of our NL3 side from last year, with no prospect of replacing them with other players of an appropriate standard. As Chairman of Hawks, I take very seriously the club’s duty of care to its players and I am also very mindful of the development of the club. Most of our current squad are young players who we have nurtured this season. We need to keep them engaged and enthusiastic, so that we can build on this. We have a strong and vibrant junior club and will be expanding by two teams next year to run sides at U10, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16. These youngsters will come through to feed our Open Age and I have no doubt that by consolidating in this way we will be stronger in the long run”

RFL National Development Manger Niel Wood, who has operational responsibility for both competitions said, “We welcome the fact that the Hawks are able to regroup in the RLC and recognise the difficulty they are currently experiencing. The National 3 clubs remain committed to the ethos of the competition and the RFL recognise the great work being done by them and we will continue to support them as they seek to grow and expand Rugby League.”

Gateshead Storm chairman Albert Livesey expressed his sympathy for the Hawks’ plight. “The opening matches of the season have confirmed our view that this league would be highly competitive in 2006. The inclusion of Featherstone Lions and Dewsbury Celtic has given us a very solid backbone and a lot more interesting history. Although Sheffield pulling out is a real disappointment, I firmly believe that the NL3 has a lot to look forward to this year - who would have predicted, for instance, that Hemel to be top after five rounds.”

Sheffield’s record will be expunged from this season’s competition.

Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks open their LHF Healthplan National League 3 campaign on Saturday 15th April at The Hillsborough Arena against Bramley Buffaloes.Kick off is at 2:30 pm

Bramley, one of the oldest Rugby League Clubs in the country, suffered at the hands of the RFL and had to reform last year to play their first match against the Hawks in NL3 at Bramley. The first fixture is reversed this year. Bramley are contenders for the league title this season.

The Hawks, under the coaching guidance of one of Sheffield Eagles legends, Lynton Stott, will be starting the campaign with a young side who will be out to improve on their 5th place of last year and hope to welcome back, in particular, Jon Nichols and Matt Mullholland who have both been representing England in the Students Home Nations competition, and many of the squad from last year, with up and coming youngsters Harry Whales & Tom Gray.

Entrance to matches is £3 for adults with programmes at 50p and a season ticket, which covers 10 home matches, is only £20.

MEDIA RELEASE: SHEFFIELD HILLSBOROUGH HAWKS WOMEN'S OPEN AGE ARLFC

The women's team of Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks ARLFC may well be playing their very last game of rugby league this Sunday (2nd April) at Hillsborough Arena against Rochdale (Kick-off 2pm)

Even though they are part of the Women's Development League they are finding it impossible to continue due to a lack of players.

The team has had in the past been highly successful, has scored some notable victories, but is now suffering due to a total lack of numbers.

In a city of Sheffield's size it seems incredible that the club cannot get even a dozen ladies (Over 16 yrs of age) to play rugby league, even though it is played and coached in schools throughout the city.

The ladies section is on the brink of folding unless they can attract more players.

Training is on Wednesday and Friday nights 6 pm to 8pm

Anyone who would like to play please contact Sarah Hewart c/o Hillsborough Arena: 0114 233 5310

18th March 2006

Jon Nichol and Matt Mullholland have both been selected to represent England in this year's British Championships to be held in Manchester.

THE JON BAUER MEMORIAL TROPHY

It is with regret that the South West Yorkshire Barbarians vs Sheffield Eagles Jon Bauer Memorial Game, due to be staged on Sunday 15th January has been cancelled.

The Pennine League, of which all five member clubs of the South West Yorkshire ARL (Hillsborough Hawks, Hoyland Vikings, Rotherham Roosters, Dodworth and Dearne Valley) compete in have refused to cancel the South Yorkshire clubs' fixtures for the weekend of the game, which has lead to players being unavailable to play on the Sunday for the representative side having played for their club on the Saturday.

"It is disappointing that The Pennine League will not cancel these fixtures to allow the South Yorkshire players to have test themselves against the professional Eagles" an Eagles spokesperson said. "They are concerned about their backlog of fixtures which affects other clubs in their League."

15th May 2003 - First published by BARLA

An astonishing revival of amateur rugby league in Sheffield had led to the setting up of a Hillsborough Hawks reserve team, less than two months into the existence of the new regime. The future of the Hillsborough Sports Arena based set-up has been turned around since the entrance of the Hawks into the new National League Three competition. When the Hawks were fielding a team at the lower National Conference level, as recently as March, they travelled to away matches without the luxury of substitutes and struggled to draw the 13 mandatory players until they were forced to pull out of the league in early April. But with a new goal and a new approach the Hawks now have a base of almost 50 hopefuls and have had a record 44 participants to contend with at Wednesday and Friday night sessions. In their opening home match the Hawks subjected the Manchester Knights to a 38-0 trouncing and the first away fixture saw the Sheffield side fall to a gripping last minute defeat in Huddersfield. The whopping demand for high-level coaching from Huddersfield Superleague trainer Jason Davidson fuelled by promising results in the opening two National League Three fixtures has led him to set up a second team and appoint a new coach. Experienced Doncaster based Terry Cox has been selected to lead the Hawks A-team to their first fixture on May 25th. Davidson is confident that he and the former under-14s trainer will make up an ideal partnership. “I have known Terry for a long time and he and I are definitely singing from the same hymn sheet when it comes to coaching.” Cox also has a wealth of experience with senior players, coaching Rossington ARLFC in the Yorkshire League and the Hillsborough Pennine League team, under the guidance of Eagles Challenge Cup legends and now successful National League bosses Mark Aston and Paul Broadbent.
